Improvements will include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

Search and Rescue response under Heavenly Gondola
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/17/2018 - 1:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Valley Ski Patrol and the Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to an injured skier under the Gondola line on Wednesday, March 15 at about 12:23 p.m.
The local 54-year-old woman was backcountry skiing out-of-bounds when she injured her lower leg between the Gondola mid-station and Van Sickle Bi-State Park.
Search on for man missing in Alpine County near Bear Valley
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/16/2018 - 12:10pmThere is an active search underway for Thomas Mullarkey after he failed to return to his Arnold, California cabin after a day of skiing at Bear Valley Resort in Alpine County Wednesday.
His wife Jane Drummond-Mullarkey contacted the Alpine County Sheriff's Office at 11:30 p.m. March 14 when her husband did not return. Shortly after, sheriff's personnel located his car at the resort.
SAR volunteers spend night with skier near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/23/2018 - 10:10amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Douglas County, El Dorado County and Washoe County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, paramedics and Blackhawk rescue helicopters all assisted in the location and retrieval of two skiers who went missing at Heavenly Mountain Resort Thursday evening.
Douglas County 911 operators received a call on February 22 at 5:00 p.m. from two male adults who said they were lost at the resort. They said they had some water, but were wet and cold, their cell phone batteries were diminished, and one of the skiers suffered from a medical condition.
Proposed improvements at Heavenly released

Kyle Smaine of South Lake Tahoe wins halfpipe at Mammoth

The 26-year-old Sierra-at-Tahoe skier has a chance.
The U.S. freeski team added four more athletes to its halfpipe roster for PyeongChang on Friday night.
Alex Ferreira and Torin Yater-Wallace are joining David Wise on the men's team, while Brita Sigourney and Devin Logan are joining South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman on the women's team.
"Jammin 4 Tash" to honor local snowboarder who died from leukemia

Sierra-at-Tahoe is holding "Jammin 4 Tash" on Saturday, January 20 to honor the late Natasha "Tash" Sagucka who died from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on November 4, 2017 at the age of 24.
"From the time she was two years old till her last days on this earth she found peace, love and light on the mountains," was stated on Sagucka's obituary. "She thrived from the energy of slashing through the trees and sliding on the rails just perfectly."
Maddie Bowman closer to Olympics with spot in Friday finals in Snowmass

South Lake Tahoe company producing big air jump for SnowGlobe

Backcountry skiers trigger avalanche near Mt. Rose
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/18/2017 - 8:35pmThree skiers in the Hourglass Bowl area on Tamarack Peak near Mt. Rose triggered a 600 foot long avalanche around 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Nobody was seriously injured though two of the party were slammed into trees and rocks according to the Sierra Avalanche Center.
Heavy new snow was falling rapidly at the time. The avalanche was about three feet deep and 200 feet wide.
A group of 4 or 5 were skiing in the area, with three of them involved in the slide. Two of the skiers lost their skis and another had a possible broken ankle.
Champions Plaza “Spirit of Competition” unveiled
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/27/2017 - 7:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long awaited 11 foot tall bronze sculpture "Spirit of Competition" perched on top of a 4.5 ton boulder was unveiled during a ceremony at Champions Plaza Friday.
Sculptor Gareth Curtiss transported his creation from his studio in Fortine, Montana just two days ago in the back of his van, early Thursday morning the bronze sculpture was picked up with a crane and placed on top of the boulder, bolted in and wrapped up for the ceremony.
Vail Resorts posts gain in 2017; CalPERS increases their investment

Highlights of their year:
Total skier visits for fiscal 2017 increased to approximately 12.0 million, up 20.1 percent
Total lift revenue increased $160.3 million, or 24.4%
Ski school revenue increased $34.5 million, or 24.1%
Dining revenue increased $29.6 million, or 24.4%
Retail/rental revenue increased $52.3 million, or 21.7%

After a popular, and sold out, inaugural event in 2016, TEDx South Lake Tahoe is coming back and promises to be bigger and better.
The TEDx license only allowed 100 attendees at The Loft during its first year, but after a trip the New York and a TEDx main event, local organizers were able to qualify South Lake Tahoe for a larger audience in 2017.
Ski Patroller from Heavenly still missing on Mt. Rainier
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/17/2017 - 6:45pmDmitri Pajitnov (Dima), a member of the Heavenly Mountain Resort Ski Patrol team, has been missing since July 3, 2017 when he fell through a snow bridge on Washington's Mt. Rainier near Pebble Creek as he skied down the mountain.
His body has not been found and friends are heading back to the area this weekend for what they are calling a recovery mission.
Dmitri's ski partner observed the fall and searched for two hours using an avalanche probe and transceiver before descending to Paradise and reporting the incident according to a report from the National Park Service.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/16/2017 - 6:09pmPete Sonntag, the current senior vice president of Vail Resort's Lake Tahoe region, is leaving the lake to be the new chief operating officer of Vail's Whistler Blackcomb.
He will start this summer once his Canadian work visa is approved.
The appointment follows the announcement last month that longtime Whistler Blackcomb chief operating officer, Dave Brownlie, was stepping down to pursue other endeavors after a nearly 30-year career at the resort.
Sass Talk: Cannabis discussion continues

The first trip was to Breckenridge, a visit I piggybacked on top of a wedding I attended in Vail. I met with their Mayor, City Manager (formerly the police chief) and the assistant city manager. We met for two hours and our talk was primarily centered on their experiences with the legalization of cannabis in Breckenridge.

Injured backcountry skier rescued from Lake Tahoe's Jake's Peak
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/31/2017 - 2:52pmSearch and Rescue volunteers were dropped off on Jake's Peak Thursday to help an injured backcountry skier get off the mountain which is located inside Desolation Wilderness at Lake Tahoe.
At 2:30 p.m. on March 30, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a call about the injured skier, a 24-year-old man from San Luis Obispo who was in the area on Spring Break. He had been skiing near Jake's Peak when he suffered a lower leg injury and couldn't get out on his own.

Skier caught in avalanche on Mt. Tallac
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/26/2017 - 7:02pmThe Sierra Avalanche Center is reporting a skier-triggered avalanche in "The Cross" on Mt. Tallac Saturday. A group of eight skiers had been in the area about 11:00 a.m. and they skied the main entrance to the cross with some wet, loose snow activity observed.
Then, a group of two skiers went to the top of the mountain to descend into "The Cross." The first skier made several turns into the slope which released a slab avalanche.

On Monday, February 27, Skier Services Adopt A Day sponsor crew members Ingrid Heinig, Kelsey Carapia, Jack Pippin, Megan Madrid and Amy Rice provided the same dedication to ensure that Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal guests had a wonderful dining experience.
“Heavenly and the Vail family cherish the opportunity to give back to the community,” said Amy. She and her fellow crew members were a real treat for the B&B volunteers.

Team rescues injured backcountry skier in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/27/2017 - 6:04pmEl Dorado County Sheriff's Office brought together a Search and Rescue team on Sunday, February 26 after they were notified of an injured woman in the Eagle Buttress area that needed to be rescued off the mountain.
The 56-year-old Truckee woman was in the backcountry skiing with a group when she suffered an injury to her leg and was unable to ski out on her own.
Eagle Buttress is located to the north of Eagle Lake near Emerald Bay.
Northstar Mountain 20-year master plan approved by Placer County Board of Supervisors
