LONG-TERM PROJECTS
U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected in late spring 2020. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled.
South Lake Tahoe forecast: Mid-70s as highs by end of the week

Temperatures by next weekend will be soaring into the upper 80s across western Nevada with the upper 70s in the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
The NWS forecast for South Lake Tahoe:
Monday - Increasing clouds, with a high near 64. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Minden Soaring Club awards $5K in scholarships to area students
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/25/2018 - 10:24pmFive students from the area were awarded scholarships by the Minden Soaring Club (MSC) to help finance flight and ground instruction in preparation for obtaining a private or other glider rating.
Five scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were awarded to youths who demonstrated they are interested in learning to fly gliders and/or who have already begun their training and need additional monetary assistance. The scholarships were announced by the MSC Board of Trustees at the club’s annual general meeting on March 18, 2018.
Scholarship winners are all from northern Nevada:
Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/23/2017 - 1:07pmIn their 77th year of providing scouting opportunities to boys in the Carson City and Carson Valley area, Boy Scout Troop 33 is hosting their 4th annual Send A Scout to Camp Car and Truck Show on Saturday, August 12 at Fuji Park in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

For many locals who like to play on the mountain trails and along the beach and eventually need to get to work, this is the hardest time of the year.
Douglas County 6th graders learn about Minden-Tahoe Airport

Students had the opportunity to learn about how airplanes and airports work and how they might someday be involved in aviation. The organizers of the four day program calculated that more than 38 people volunteered some 350 hours in order to make this program a success.
Inn by the Lake changes name to Hotel Azure Tahoe – $3.5 million renovation completed

The hotel located at 3300 Lake Tahoe Blvd., is now called Hotel Azure, a name to match the lake across the street and the skies that surround them.
Hotel Azure has completed extensive renovations with the re-opening of the hotel in time for ski season.

Broadway hit musical Pippin featured on LTCC stage

'Something in the Wind' kite festival at Dangberg Ranch

Kites will take to the skies above historic Dangberg Ranch over the weekend of May 16-17 during the "Something in the Wind" festival. Expert kite flyers, kite making and other children's crafts, as well as wind artists will be featured.
This is a celebration of the Washoe Zephyr, the seasonal diurnal winds that are in Western Nevada.
There will be eight expert kite flyers from the Rogue Valley Windchasers Kite Club from Brookings, OR at the two day event along with Balloon Nevada with their hot air balloons on display.

Actors, singers and dancers of all ages are needed for the Lake Tahoe Community College production of the award winning musical Pippin. Gymnasts, jugglers, acrobats, aerialists are also being sought.
Auditions will be held on Tuesday, February 17 at the college's Duke Theater. Actors are required to sing selections from Pippin for the audition. Minden pilot wins year long World Championship soaring contest
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/03/2014 - 6:46amMinden's Jim Payne has soared to another world championship, winning his third consecutive Aerokurier Online Soaring Contest (OLC). This year long event has almost 15,000 pilots from around the world competing for top honors.
To compete, glider pilots record their flights with a GPS logger and submit their flight logs to the contest web site for scoring.
Payne not only won the top award, he won several categories as well as other awards:

I learned the answer to this question hanging beneath the canopy of a paraglider as it soared several hundred feet over the forested ridge that runs along the border between California and Nevada on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.
The excitement of flying through the air under an oversized parachute was matched only by the peaceful beauty of the blue lake below. It's a vantage point that might have left the great Mark Twain speechless.

Glider makes emergency landing at Heavenly Mountain Resort; pilot, passenger OK; Witness: 'I thought it was a stunt'
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 1:59pmWith hundreds of weekend skiers on the slopes, a glider crash landed on a ski run at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, with the pilot and passenger having walked away unhurt. No one else was injured.
El Dorado County authorities report the incident happened at 1:26 p.m. near the front of the First Run area of the California Lodge of the Lake Tahoe resort, which straddles the California and Nevada border.
A spokesman for Minden-Tahoe Airport based Soaring NV, said the pilot was flying a Duo Discus aircraft and lost altitude and was forced to land. The pilot is experienced and was doing a flight review, the spokesman said. The pilot and passenger were unhurt, he said.
Heavenly Mountain Resort spokesman Russ Pecoraro called the incident "irresponsible."
"We're outraged that something like this could happen. We're glad that everyone came out of this okay, but there's no excuse for this kind of irresponsible behavior," Pecoraro said in an email. "We'll do everything in our power to make sure this doesn't happen again. We're extremely lucky no one was hurt today."
As demand soars, Christmas Cheer makes plea for help

For 30 years, the Christmas Cheer food bank has helped families celebrate Christmas with a traditional dinner of turkey and all the trimmings. However, with 800 families expected to be on the list of those to receive a dinner, the charity has only 75 donated turkeys and five hams to give and organizers say they are beyond being nervous.
