Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2020 - 6:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Paying it forward has spread quickly through the South Lake Tahoe community this holiday season, and now the City is joining in to help those in need while at the same time helping out small locally-owned restaurants.
The “Pay It Forward” initiative involves community members and organizations contributing money to open tabs at local restaurants. It’s a program that helps those in need and helps support the restaurants when they need it the most.
South Lake Tahoe's Dr. Henning Mehrens retires
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/22/2020 - 2:38pmHenning Mehrens, MD, has spent over 45 years keeping the South Lake Tahoe community healthy and will be missed as he retires and is off to the next chapter of his life.
Both through his private practice as well as at Tahoe Urgent Care, Dr. Mehrens worked both tirelessly and passionately for those he cared for. Besides maintaining those offices he was also the medical director of the Skilled Nursing Facility at Barton Memorial Hospital.

As previously reported, I am stepping aside to focus on my career and raising my beautiful baby girl. I said many times while I was on the Board that every family in the District was my family, and every child in the District was my responsibility. Now that I have a child of my own, I think the parents of LTUSD will understand when I say that I need to focus on my own family for the time being.
Del Laine, South Lake Tahoe trailblazer, dies at the age of 90
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/18/2020 - 11:40amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A true trailblazer in the forming of the City of South Lake Tahoe has died at the age of 90. Del Laine, passed away from natural causes with her family at her side.
She served on South Lake Tahoe's City Council from 1976-1980, and then again from 1984-1988 and became the City's first female Mayor in 1977. She would go on to serve one more term as Mayor during her time on council.
Humane Society in South Lake Tahoe has free dog and cat food to help pet owners

The Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee (HSTT) office in South Lake Tahoe has shelves full of pet food that if ready for pickup by pet owners who need assistance.
Their office is located at 3438 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe provides 600 coats to local youth; New members welcome

Bread & Broth provides Thanksgiving bags of food for over 500 local residents
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/23/2020 - 11:17pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The volunteers at Bread & Broth packed bags of food for the community Monday, bags full of food for not only a Thanksgiving meal, but for meals through the week.
From 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on November 23, almost 200 people picked up bags for their families containing a turkey breast, yams, green beans, rolls, stuffing, pumpkin pie, sparkling apple cider, fruit, vegetables, eggs, milk and much more. Those bags of food went to feed 549 individuals in the South Lake Tahoe community.
Bread & Broth seeks donations for South Lake Tahoe Community Thanksgiving meals

During past Thanksgiving holidays, Bread & Broth has sponsored a hot Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings, once that guests could enjoy with the fellowship of others in the community. During those dinners over 250 individuals joined in the special holiday meal.
This year will have to be different due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

SnowGlobe cancels its South Lake Tahoe music festival for 2020

"2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenges and we wanted more than anything to be a bright spot in this otherwise bleak year - but after close consultation with local and state health officials regarding the impact of COVID-19, we've made the difficult decision to cancel this year's festival," said SnowGlobe on their Twitter announcement Wednesday.

Both of these will be ending at the end of the City's fiscal year on September 30.
During the City Council meeting Tuesday, staff reminded everyone in the business community to turn in their receipts and restaurant vouchers by that date.

The I Run With Maud-South Lake Tahoe group is holding a rally at Lakeview Commons on Sunday, September 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to celebrate free speech, inclusion and diversity.
Organizers said they'd like to see many of our neighbors represented at this fun, safe, family-friendly, peaceful event. They expect to have a variety of local speakers and an event that is "inspiring, uplifting and overwhelmingly positive for the South Lake Tahoe community.

The City has completed its draft CAP and is in the midst of the public review period. SLT Police team with others to start South Tahoe Alternative Collaborative Services

The emerging collaboration is called the South Tahoe Alternative Collaborative Services (STACS).

On August 15th, we hosted our very first ever Drive-thru Grab Bag Book Sale. The traditional book sales are our biggest fundraisers and due to CDC restrictions, they are just not possible.
This new format was uncertain but you rose to the challenge. You generously donated books to be sold and you embraced this unique event making it a huge success. Thank you sincerely for being there for the Friends and for your library.
Funds still available for South Lake Tahoe COVID-response grant reimbursement
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/30/2020 - 3:03pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their May 11 meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council approved $200,000 to be used in the South Lake Tahoe community through business grants, COVID-related expenses, and a restaurant voucher program to help regain momentum and recover costs during the pandemic.
The grant money has been disbursed through the El Dorado Community Foundation, the restaurant vouchers are currently being redeemed at local restaurants and local businesses are being reimbursed for expenses incurred through COVID-related purchases.

South Lake Tahoe is unquestionably one of these areas, suffering not only because of the closure of its tourist economy but suffering higher infection rates due to the very tourism it relies upon. It is for these reasons that so much of the focus of the El Dorado Community Foundation, who serves all of El Dorado County, has been directed toward South Lake Tahoe. We recognized very early on that South Lake Tahoe would be the hardest hit region in the county.
Team selected to build affordable housing project in South Lake Tahoe

The partnership of Related California and St. Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) has been selected to build the community's first modular multi-family housing development. They are naming it Sugar Pine Village.
California Fire Foundation supports South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center

The two groups gifted over $5,000 in relief efforts to the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center for food for the families they serve.
This non-profit organization provides basic needs services, educational opportunities, family advocacy and bilingual counseling for children and adults in the South Lake Tahoe region.
Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe offering increased support to South Lake Tahoe community

The food distribution from when HSTT shut down to the public due to COVID are as follows:
Dry dog food: 1719 lbs total ~ 171 lbs a week
Dry cat food: 178 lbs total ~ 18 lbs a week
Canned dog food: 636 cans ~ 64 cans a week
Canned cat food: 467 cans ~ 47 cans a week
Cat litter: 130 lbs total ~ 13 lbs a week

We have received $236,893 to date in donations since mid-March and, in turn, we have helped more than 300 families, about 1500 individuals, with assistance totaling $204,094. When parents go to their LTUSD school’s designated Materials Collection Date on June 9 or June 10, one new book will be gifted to each child along with a free puppet.
Parents of first graders at Zephyr Cove Elementary will be contacted prior to the last day of school with additional details for book and puppet pickup.

Council approves $200,000 to go to business grants, COVID expenses and restaurant vouchers

Following on the heels of their $50,000 donated to five nonprofits supplying food to the South Lake Tahoe community during the pandemic, the Council voted to follow the direction of the task force and allocate $100,000 to fund the COVID Compliance Grant Reimbursement Program, $50,000 for a Small Business Grant Program, and $50,000 to a Local Restaurant Voucher Program.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hundreds of people from the South Lake Tahoe community have benefited from the generosity of Overland Meat and Seafood Company at their hamburger giveaways.
The final one will be held on Monday, May 18 starting at 10:00 a.m.
The Grand Finale will have a theme of "Tahoe Dinners for Tahoe."
Raley's will be donating 500 packages of taco seasoning, Safeway is donating produce, Mission Tortilla is donating tortillas and Overland is donating over 1,200 pounds of hamburger.
The partnership will give hundreds of residents a taco dinner.

Watching the extreme loss of life in our country has been heartbreaking, to say the least. Not having full access to our grandkids is painful but nothing compared to what people in many cities in the country have dealt with.
Tahoe Magic gives out over $110K to locals; More donations sought to fill need

In just five weeks, the South Lake Tahoe non-profit has given away over $110,000 to more than local 785 families in need. In a normal year they give out about $30,000 to deserving families.

"I am still feeling the warmth from Wednesday night’s Tahoe Supports Tahoe Live Stream Benefit Concert," said Tahoe Magic Co-Founder Wendy David. "Thanks to the musicians who donated their talent and time, and to the promotion efforts just ahead of the concert, we received 88 separate donations totaling $15,290.35 just during the 24 hours of April 15."

In business since 1987, Overland said this was their best, and largest, event in the 33 years they've been open.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Saturday, April 18, hundreds of locals would have been dressing up and attending the 31st annual Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Elegant Evening.
Even though canceled the club is holding their online auction along with contests and a live stream dedication to the event. Since 100 percent of funds raised at Elegant Evening go back into the South Lake Tahoe community to enhance the lives of its women and youth, the club is committed to doing the same this year.
Tahoe Douglas Rotary donates $20,000 to local nonprofits amidst COVID-19 emergency
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/10/2020 - 11:37amSTATELINE, Nev. - Due to the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Douglas announced its immediate initial commitment and disbursement of $20,000 in cash grants to four South Lake Tahoe Community proactive support agencies - Tahoe Magic, Christmas Cheer, Giving Angels and Bread & Broth.
The club has been serving the South Shore community since 1965 and just completed an online auction in lieu of their normal annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration.
