PCT hikers find comfort, supplies and angels in South Lake Tahoe

What gained in popularity with the movie and book by Cheryl Strayed, "Wild," people are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in record numbers, and many of them stop by South Lake Tahoe on their way from border to border.

To date, Lake of the Sky Outfitters at the South Lake Tahoe "Y" has seen about 650 of the PCT hikers stop by. Being the largest city near the 2,650 mile trail that takes most hikers about five months to complete, the community offers what many of them seek on "zero days": supplies, motels, a shower, lots of food and mail.

South Shore casinos show slight gain in revenue in June

Income for casinos on the South Shore was up in June, 2016, recording a 6.47 percent gain in gaming win when compared to income from a year ago. They had a "win" of $18,753,534.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

For the fiscal year, the local casinos continue to be off from last year, with a drop in the gaming win by 3.84 percent.

Boys on 7 entertain celebrities and spectators at celebrity golf

What started out as a group of friends coming to the South Shore from their homes in the Sacramento area to watch the American Century Golf Tournament at Edgewood has turned into a spectator sport of its own.

As one watches the activity its hard to tell who the gallery is there to watch, the celebrities of the group of friends and what is about to transpire as the celebrity walks to the tee box.

Free Farmer's Market in South Lake Tahoe for those in need; Volunteers needed

The mobile food pantry from El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion parking lot. For over 15 years the non-profit has brought food to the South Shore. Besides the food bags from local residents in need, the food bank also delivers to several non-profits in town including Senior Plaza and Bread and Broth.

During the summer and fall, extra fresh produce is added to the distributions.

SnowGlobe extended until 2018; Promoter wants to bring three more events to town annually

The annual SnowGlobe Music Festival is here to stay, at least for now.

During Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, promoter Chad Donnelly went before the elected officials, asking them for a three year extension of the annual festival until 2019 (though they would ultimately like a deal until 2027), and more money from the City to help with the costs of garbage pick-up and transportation for the three-day event which runs from December 29-31 each year.

What the City gave him was not quite what he was asking for as he got more cash, but less time.

Lisa Maloff donates $2.5 million for new field and track at Whittell High School

Lisa Maloff is continuing her charitable ways in the South Shore community with yet another sizable donation. This time, it is in the amount of $2.5 million to be used on the sports field and track at Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove, Nev.

In a declaration approved by the Douglas County School District, the donation is to "enhance the education and athletic experience" of the students who attend Whittell.

Flight Deck Sports Bar & Grill at Lake Tahoe Airport reopens with new owners

Views are a given when in South Lake Tahoe, but being able to combine dining, drinking with mountains, blue sky and airplanes is a treat that the new Flight Deck Sports Bar & Grill at the Lake Tahoe Airport is hoping to highlight.

"Getting people out to the airport is a goal," said new co-owner Tina Shannon. "The beauty and the sunsets out here are amazing."

Tina, who along with husband Mike have reopened the Flight Deck, which shares the airport with the government center for South Lake Tahoe. They opened on June 22 and celebrated a grand opening on Wednesday.

Kudos: Friends of Our Lady of Tahoe Feed Hungry

“Today was a wonderful experience,” commented Sheldon Zimbler, as he was volunteering as a member of Friends of Our Lady of Tahoe Catholic Church “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsor crew. “It was good to not watch TV, especially in this difficult time, rather to feel a very small part of the solution.” Sheldon and fellow sponsor volunteer Ed Day came to Bread & Broth’s dinner on July 11 to work alongside B&B volunteers to serve the food insecure of the Tahoe South Shore community.

Community advocate named Tahoe Chamber Interim CEO

Veteran community advocate Steve Teshara has accepted the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Board Chair Mike McLaughlin announced the Board’s appointment of Teshara in a statement released July 21.

“Our Board is extremely pleased Steve has agreed to step in to support the Chamber’s mission, membership, and community engagement while we seek a new CEO to move the organization into 2017 and beyond,” said McLaughlin. “Steve adds a unique blend of experiences and accomplishments to our dedicated Chamber staff.”

"Bandaged Bandit" sought by FBI for four bank robberies

The man dubbed the "Bandaged Bandit" is being sought by the FBI in a string of armed bank robberies that started with the South Shore robbery of US Bank on June 29.

Three additional banks were robbed after the Stateline one.

Two banks in El Dorado Hills were robbed on July 1 and July 14, and another one in Folsom on July 15, all apparently by the same suspect who affixes bandages to his nose, chin and arms.

Lawsuit filed to prevent Loop Road project from appearing on South Lake Tahoe ballot

At the end of business on Monday, papers were served on the City of South Lake Tahoe, the City Council and four members of the group Let Tahoe Decide to keep the subject of the Loop Road/US Highway 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project off the ballot in November.

New business on the way to town: South Lake Brewing Company

South Lake Tahoe natives Nicole Riegel Smith and Chris Smith have returned to their hometown, this time as college graduates with an expertise in brewing beer and a desire to open a new business on the South Shore.

Plans have been submitted and the work will soon begin on the Smith's venture. South Lake Brewing Company. They have signed the lease for the long vacant Ace Hardware building on the corner of Tata Lane and Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Theft on the rise in South Lake Tahoe; SLTPD offers advice on protecting belongings

Readers of South Tahoe Now are already aware of this with our weekly coverage of police and sheriff calls for the South Shore, there is a rise in property theft.

According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), the rise is a result of thieves being able to act quickly when they see unattended and unsecured property in vehicles, homes and public places. Since July 1, 2016, there have been 54 reported thefts in just the city limits, or 3.375 thefts per day. Of the 54 thefts reported, 61% (33) are a result of unsecured and/or unattended property.

Memorial fund set up for fallen BLM firefighter Jake O'Malley

Whittell High graduate Jake O'Malley was one of the two wildland firefighters killed in a single vehicle accident on July 10.

As part of O'Malley's duties while based in Winnemucca, Nevada was to patrol for fires, and it was while doing this when his vehicle crashed, killing both Jake and his roommate, Will Hawkins of Reno. A third occupant was hospitalized and has since been released.

Firefighters quickly put out two fires on the South Shore

Firefighters responded to two small fires on Sunday, one at Round Hill and the other in the meadow behind the Ross store.

A person walking behind the US Forest Service building and Ross/Rite Aid building saw a fire and rushed into Ross to call 911. Firefighters responded quickly and the small fire was quickly extinguished. The fire was only able to burn a 5 ft x 5 ft square. The cause is under investigation.

Man runs 65 miles to South Lake Tahoe to show support for law enforcement

It is dark. It is 2:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15 at the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) in Placerville. It is early, but not too early to prevent a group of people to come see Camino resident Hervé Leconte leave on his 65-mile run to the EDSO building in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe residents, along with rest of state, continue to conserve water

Despite near average rainfall in much of Northern California this past winter, 60 percent of the state remains in severe or extreme drought. Groundwater basins and many reservoirs are badly depleted as the state’s drought grinds into a fifth year. Those living in, and visiting, South Lake Tahoe, have enjoyed higher water levels to view, boat and recreate in.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to prison for sex crimes against a minor

South Lake Tahoe resident Ronald Scott Williams was sentenced to three years in State Prison on Friday, July 8.

In El Dorado County Superior Court, the 27-year-old was found guilty of lewd or lascivious acts with a minor age 14-15.

Williams was originally arrested on September 29, 2015 on an arrest warrant for the crime committed in the County area of the South Shore on August 4, 2015. He had been out on bail until his sentencing.

County now offering required immunizations to South Shore students

Approximately 90-94.9 percent of students registered for school in South Lake Tahoe are fully vaccinated, which means its time for immunizations before school starts in August for the other 5 to 10 percent.

Steph Curry headed to South Lake Tahoe for American Century Golf

Two time MVP of the NBA, Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors is headed to the South Shore to play in the 27th annual American Century Golf Championship July 22-24.

Last year, Curry had to pass because of the birth of his second child Ryan. This year, he was due to play for the USA in the Olympic Games, but with an injured right knee he has decided to stay home, and opened the doors to play in Tahoe.

Countdown to American Century Championship:"The fans are great!"

In just over a week, the eyes of sports fans will be on Lake Tahoe as the 27th annual American Century Golf Championship opens at Edgewood Tahoe. The field of 86 celebrities from sports, television, music, stage, screen, politics, Nascar, and the US Marine Corps are all headed to the South Shore July 19-24 to play.

"The golfers anticipate getting the invitation letter to play," said Former NFL Head Coach and ESPN Analyst Herm Edwards. "We get excited at that moment."

Wenck won't seek reelection; Retiring from LTCC board after 42 years

The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) will be saying good by to Dr. Fritz Wenck this December as he leaves the LTCC Board of Trustees after serving for 42 years. Wenck is the current President and one of the longest-serving trustees in California’s community college system.

Gorman leaves Tahoe Chamber to pursue new business

She's been a Regional Director with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, PR and Marketing with Kautz Irontstone Vineyards and Banquet and Conference Manager at Copper Mountain Resort. She earned a Doctor of Law degree, and, for what most in South Lake Tahoe know her as, she's been the Executive Director of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. As of today, she's left the Chamber and is now preparing for a new career in coaching, leadership and training.

El Dorado Hills bank robber appears to be same as South Shore suspect

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is working on the strong possibility that a man who robbed the Chase Bank in El Dorado Hills on Friday is the same man who robbed the US Bank on Kingsbury Grade on Wednesday. Lt. Jim Byers of EDSO told South Tahoe Now that the moment the photo of the suspect came out, deputies in South Lake Tahoe saw the resemblance and notified him.

South Lake Tahoe bank robbed Friday; second South Shore bank robbery in three days

8:30 p.m. update 7/1/16: The investigation of Friday's bank robbery at the Al Tahoe branch of El Dorado Savings led to the identification of Gabriel Antonio Evans, 36, of South Lake Tahoe as the suspect.

Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Evans and a search warrant for his residence in the 3000 block of Riverside Avenue. Due to Evan’s past violent criminal history, the SWAT team was employed to make the arrest. Officers, assisted by the FBI, arrested Evans at his residence at 7:45 p.m. this evening.

Gaming revenues drop again for South Shore casinos

Income for casinos on the South Shore was down again in May, 2016, recording a 15.12 percent drop in gaming win when compared to income from a year ago, the highest percentage drop in Nevada. They had a "win" of $13,709,097.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

For the fiscal year, the local casinos continue to be off from last year, with a drop in the gaming win by 4.75 percent.

No change in service expected as ambulance services change on South Shore

Most people won't even notice as ambulance services change on the South Shore July 1. The final touches to the new Cal Tahoe JPA service agreements were made Wednesday in preparation for a change from the City of South Lake Tahoe operating the ambulances that serve the city, to the function being part of the JPA at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

El Dorado County Supervisors vote to change VHR regulations at Lake Tahoe

During Tuesday's El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting they quietly voted to change the ordinances regulating vacation homes in the Lake Tahoe portion of the county (Meyers and all unincorporated areas on the South Shore). Missing was the heated public comments from the Vacation Home Rental owners as seen at South Lake Tahoe City Council meetings.

The changes for VHRs in the Tahoe side of the County (the Board of Supervisors at a duly noticed meeting shall have the authority to impose additional standard conditions applicable to vacation home rentals as necessary):

New coffee and wine bar a place to revive, recharge and relax

I think I've found my new favorite spot in South Lake Tahoe! As I walked through the front gate of the Revive Coffee & Wine, I instantly felt at home as the decor both inside and out matched my pinterest boards and crafty endeavors and the smiling and friendly staff was more than welcoming.

Revive Coffee & Wine is a new South Lake Tahoe business inside the old Pichetti Winery at 3135 Harrison Avenue, sharing the space with South Tahoe Standup Paddle.

The story behind the name "revive" is a special one.

"Let Tahoe Decide" group gathers enough signatures for Loop Road initiative

An initiative prohibiting the City Council of South Lake Tahoe from approving or supporting the US Highway 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project received enough signatures to make it to the ballot in November.

The group, Let Tahoe Decide, was notified today that their petition gathered enough signatures to take it to the next step. Ten percent of the registered voters in the city, or 879 signatures, were required. El Dorado County Registrar William Schulz said his office received 1,496 signatures, and by verifying the required random sample, found enough valid signatures.

Fire pit restrictions differ on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe

Depending on where you live on the South Shore, you may be able to have a wood fire in your outdoor fire pit, or, maybe not.

Restrictions differ between Tahoe Douglas Fire Department and the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley Fire Departments.

Cal Fire and the U.S Forest Service also have fire regulations to be aware of.

Tahoe Village recognized for bear logic awareness efforts

Two homeowners associations rose to the challenge when Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval challenged Nevadans to think like a bear as he proclaimed July as Bear Logic Month.

“That is what Bear Logic is all about, thinking like a bear,” said Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) black bear biologist Carl Lackey.

On the South Shore, Tahoe Village Homeowners Association on Upper Kingsbury, and in Reno, the Caughlin Ranch Homeowners Association, have both been recognized by NDOW for their bear logic awareness efforts.

Lake Tahoe reaches its peak; heat wave to hit South Shore

Lake Tahoe's water level has likely peaked, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

With most of the snow around the Tahoe Basin melted, water outflow due to evaporation into the air is now greater than the inflow into the lake. The lake peaked at just over 6,224 feet about a week ago.

The forecast will only help the evaporation rate. An average of 1,400,000 tons of water evaporates from the surface of Lake Tahoe every 24 hours, 360,000 acre feet a year. T

2nd annual Tahoe Games Bike Night Series starts Friday

The Tahoe Games, the unique nighttime bike series at Lake Tahoe Golf Cours, returns this summer with the first night on Friday, June 24.

Cyclists on non-motorized bikes go cross-country over fairways, through the sand bunkers, into the rough and over the bridges, all while illuminated. All ages had a blast at this event last summer.

Sierra Cycle Works will be on hand with bike demos and raffle prizes for competitors. Helmets bike lights, headlamps, glow sticks, decorated bikes and costumes are all strongly encouraged.
