Widespread prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by admin on Sat, 02/27/2016 - 10:00pmWeather permitting, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S Forest Service are planning on continuing their prescribed fire operations next week beginning Monday, February 29, 2016.
On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Camp Galilee, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor.
On the South Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Spring Creek, Panther Road, and Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Sawmill Road.
South Tahoe and Whittell High basketball teams play in state tournament Friday

Whittell Warriors are taking on the Adelson Lions in their Division IV game at 3:00 p.m. at Reed High School in Reno with the South Tahoe Vikings playing the Desert Pines Jaguars at 4:40 p.m. at Reno High. The Vikings play in NIAA Division I-A.
South Shore casinos keep "win" figures on the positive side in January
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/26/2016 - 9:36amThe Nevada Gaming Control Board released their monthly figures for January, and those for casinos on the South Shore show a gain of 9.22 percent.
In January of 2016, casinos had a report gaming win of $15,434,635. A gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
North Lake Tahoe casinos had the biggest percentage of "win" with a gain of $445,683, up 22.35 percent over January of 2015. The biggest loss was seen on the Las Vegas Strip, where casinos took in a win of $532,275,993, down 7.72 percent.

Fire operations to continue at Lake Tahoe

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor. Ten acres on Spooner, 15 acres at Logan Shoals, 150 acres at Camp Galilee and 30 acres at Sand Harbor.
On the South Shore, operations are scheduled near Eagle Point Campground, Spring Creek and Panther Road. Five acres in Angora Creek area, 10 acres on Panther, 30 acres at Emerald Bay.

South Tahoe and Whittell High boys basketball teams headed to state tournament

The score went back and forth during the game, with South Tahoe having a one-point lead with just under a minute left to play. Senior Denzel Perez was fouled 4 seconds left, and nailed both free throws, taking the Vikings up by three.
STHS ended up with the win.

'Dough' opens in the Chateau, bringing fast, casual pizza to South Lake Tahoe

"Fast casual pizza is picking up across the country," said Baker. "I thought it'd be a good idea here."
Dough just opened on Saturday, February 13 and they've been hopping sever ince.
"The best thing about our pizza is that you don't have to share," added Baker.

South Tahoe High boys, who are the number three seed in Northern Nevada NIAA Division 1-A, are headed to North Valleys High in Reno Thursday afternoon for their quarterfinal game against Spring Creek at 4:40 p.m. The STHS Vikings are split on the season against the Spartans with one loss, and one win.

About 100 people took advantage of having the opportunity.

A different kind of presentation will be made on the US50/South Shore Revitalization Project this week, one that will include a question and answer period and not just the open house atmosphere of recent Tahoe Transportation District meetings on the project. For the past several years, TTD has been holding public meetings and talking with the community shareholders in order to formulate the best plan for the future of Highway 50 through the Stateline portion of South Lake Tahoe, a plan initiated in 1980.
Hwy 89 road construction by Fanny Bridge may cause delays

The work will take place from Blackwood Creek Road to and including the Truckee River (“Fanny”) Bridge in Tahoe City. It’s scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 9-11 and will require one-way traffic control.

South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Teams end regular season at the top

The Boys Team ended the season in first, the Girls Team in second, giving STHS enough points for the overall title.
Whittell High School boys ended the season in fifth, girls in sixth, with an overall sixth place.
William Hill opens new sportsbook inside MontBleu Resort

MontBleu became the latest location to offer a sportsbook operated by the international company which is based in England. There are 104 other locations in Nevada including the operations at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe.

Douglas County Schools on a one-hour delay
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/01/2016 - 7:52amAll Douglas County schools, both in the valley and at the lake, are on a one-hour delay Monday morning, February 1. The lake schools are also on a main bus stop only schedule. Students will return home at their regularly scheduled time.
Lake Tahoe Unified schools on the South Shore are on a normal start and bus stop schedule.
Carson City schools were already set to be closed today due to a staff development day. Teachers will be reporting to class, but not students.
Washoe County Schools will be on a two hour delay. Winter Bus stops are in effect.

The long time local had recently moved to the Sacramento area due to illness.
Malcolm graduated from Tracy High School and U.C. Davis. Following completion of his military service, Malcolm moved to the South Shore where he worked at Sahara Tahoe.
He owned Malcolm C Pribyl Insurance Agents And Services which operated for years on Ski Run Blvd, after which he operated out of his home on the meadow near the college.

December's gaming figures released: South Shore casinos show gain
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/29/2016 - 9:28amThe Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures for the month of December, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $17,950,675 which is 12.56 percent up from the same period in 2014.
For the fiscal year, the South Shore is still below the previous year by 8.30 percent.
When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, Stateline casinos led all others with gains for the month. The biggest percentage loss was experienced in small, non-Reno, Sparks, North Lake Tahoe casinos in Washoe County which saw income from gaming down 15.74 percent.

The community is invited to see the plans for the US50/South Shore Revitalization Plan for the South Lake Tahoe and Stateline areas in an open house on Tuesday, January 26 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.
Tahoe Transportation District has been meeting with the public over several years to get opinions, input and have open discussion about the proposed plan (also know as Loop Road) that would take Highway 50 behind Raley's and the Heavenly Village. The idea is to make the area more walking and biking friendly with safer routes and less vehicle traffic.

South Tahoe High's varsity basketball teams won Wednesday night in Sparks. The boys beat the Railroaders 77-63 while the girls handled their opponent, winning the game by a score of 54-34.

The two iconic artists will bring their once in a lifetime concert to the south shore on Friday, July 15, 2015, a week before the American Century Golf Championship at Edgewood Tahoe.
Tickets will go on sale on Ticketmaster Monday, January 25.
They are the second group to confirm a stop at Harvey's. Country music star Keith Urban will be performing Friday, July 29.
"Manly man's" barbershop opens up in South Lake Tahoe

"Barbering is a lost art," said Beau Baker, the shop's owner. "But, barbers are making a comeback."
"I just got the best haircut of my life from a new barber in town," said South Tahoe High Athletic Director Tony Sunzeri. "It's an old school barbershop with new school flavor."
Rock icon Glenn Frey of the Eagles dies at age 67

Glenn Frey, the guitarist and sometime singer for the legendary 1970s band The Eagles, died Monday at age 67. The Eagles last performed in South Lake Tahoe during a two-day concert at Harvey's Outdoor Arena in 2014.
According to news reports, Frey had surgery for intestinal problems in November.

Six months ago they launched "Explore Your Trip," a itinerary planning tool on their website that helps travelers plan their trip based on what they like to do, what their budget, what they like to each and many other categories.

Chair falls from Heavenly lift; 65 people evacuated
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/03/2016 - 8:42pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE - A chair fell from Heavenly Mountain Resort's North Bowl chairlift today, resulting in 65 people being stranded for two hours before being evacuated from the lift.
Just before 11 a.m. on January 3, 2016, the unoccupied chair fell off the cable and the lift was immediately shut down.
Lara Miller of South Lake Tahoe was among those stranded on the chairlift. She said the resort's ski patrol checked on the stranded skiers during the two hour ordeal.

An estimated 5,000 to 10,000 people lined the route waiting for the road to close just before midnight.

Short and quiet New Year's Eve celebration at Stateline
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/01/2016 - 10:19amThe celebratory crowd at Stateline was once again a small crowd, estimated by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to be between 5,000-10,000. The road through the casino corridor didn't have to close until 11:58 p.m.

Strategic Priority: Fiscal Sustainability
The most important issue facing cities and local agencies is continued steadfast attention to the budget, both short term and long term fiscal impacts.
· FY 15/16 budget adopted on time and without use of alternative revenues (3rd consecutive year).
· Adopted 5-year Financial Forecast and 5-Year Capital Investment Plan.
