Tens of thousands of residents are evacuated from their homes in Napa, Sonoma, Santa Cruz, Salinas, Grass Valley, Nevada City and other cities in the state. Most of the fires were started by a massive lightning storm over Northern California Sunday where over 10,800 lightning strikes were observed.
Reminder: Two-week full closure of US50 scheduled for Echo Summit Project
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/18/2020 - 12:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a delay in getting materials in 2019, Caltrans has scheduled a full closure of U.S. Highway 50 for the Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project for two weeks beginning Friday, Sept. 18. After the delay last year, the contractor on the project was going to install the bridge girders in June of 2020, but many wanted that timeframe postponed due to the the opening of tourist season after COVID-related closures this past spring.

Clean Tahoe 2020 $5 Dump Day has been canceled

Organizers will return in 2021 with both spring and fall dump events planned. They said the dump days rely heavily on personal contact, and with the socially distancing requirements to keep COVID-19 at bay, they decided there was no way to hold one at this time.
Popular South Lake Tahoe fishing derby canceled for 2020
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2020 - 7:25amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 18th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids’ Fishing Derby has been canceled due to the pandemic. The Lodge has sponsored the tournament at Lake Baron inside Tahoe Paradise Park for 17 years and said they feel it important to follow state and county guidelines to avoid group gatherings and the safety and protection of children is paramount.
The Lodge had been planning on having the Optimists Club as co-sponsors this September after the Optimists had to cancel their fishing derby at Sawmill Pond earlier this summer.

Full closure of US50 over Echo Summit September 18-October 2
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/09/2020 - 10:44pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The planned full closure of US50 over Echo Summit for the Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project will take place September 18 to October 2, 2020. The week prior to that will be one-way controlled traffic as crews prepare for replacement of the existing bridge.
Originally set for completion in 2019, the seven precast bridge girders needed were not completed in time. That pushed the completion date to Spring 2020. There were one-way controlled traffic controls then but a full closure wouldn't have been until the end of June.
High school sports news - NIAA moves football and soccer to spring
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/24/2020 - 11:32amThe Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) has announced their high school sports schedule for members in their area, including South Tahoe and Truckee High Schools.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of school reopening schedules, traditional fall sports have moved to Spring 2021. Adjustments to the schedules were voted on by the NIAA Legislative Commission which is comprised of the superintendents of each school in the league.

Miller moths, or the army cutworm, have become a nuisance in many parts of Lake Tahoe over the last few weeks, but not all areas have been affected. Those who have them around their homes are seeing dozens each night, swarming around their lights both inside and outside.

Clarity of Lake Tahoe decreased 8 feet in 2019 due to several factors
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/10/2020 - 11:51amLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Scientists and researchers have been watching the clarity of Lake Tahoe for decades, rejoicing when one can see almost 100 feet down into the iconic body of water, sadness when clarity drops to record levels.
The clarity of the lake is an important indicator of the changing conditions of Lake Tahoe.
In 2019, Lake Tahoe's clarity decreased nearly eight feet from the previous year's dramatic 10-foot improvement. The average clarity in 2019 was 62.7 feet, the second-lowest on record. In 2017, the recorded clarity was 60 feet. In 1968, it was 102 feet.

Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears results in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues as well as fines and possible jail time for violators. Each year, local law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat or are damaging property. In some cases, the bear must be euthanized.
Local students among 650 graduates of Western Nevada College

Following the spring semester 2020, 650 students have graduated with 692 degrees and certificates. Eighteen of those were given to residents around Lake Tahoe.

A new bridge over the Truckee River was also created during the first stage of the SR89/Fanny Bridge Revitalization Project which included another roundabout on the west end of Tahoe City on SR89.
Full closure of US50 over Echo Summit moved to after Labor Day
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/14/2020 - 1:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A planned full closure of US50 over Echo Summit for the Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project has been postponed to after Labor Day, 2020.
Caltrans made the announcement on Thursday that construction has not progressed enough to where the bridgework requiring a full closure could not be completed by June 15.
A full closure of Highway 50 is not permitted between June 15 and Labor Day due to high traffic volumes expected during the peak summer season in South Lake Tahoe.
Tahoe Chamber cancels 2020 Business Expo
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/12/2020 - 8:03amThe Tahoe Chamber has canceled its 2020 GO Local Business EXPO. They had rescheduled their spring event and moved to May 29 but with current closures and COVID-19 related restrictions, it won't be held.
The popular event will return in the spring of 2021.
"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions placed on our community by California Governor Newsom and Nevada Governor Sisolak, the Chamber believes that this cancellation is a precautionary decision that will protect the health of our community, businesses, and staff members," the Chamber said in a statement.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected in late spring 2020. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled.

Now is the time to prepare by placing traps for the queens as they start to emerge from their winter hibernation.
The queens are the only bee colony member to hibernate in the winter. She emerges in spring and begins to look for a suitable place to build a nest and begin her new colony. By the end of summer one colony can have 4,000 to 5,000 yellow jackets.

Lake Tahoe snowpack measures 3% of average for May 1; Statewide stations at 37% of average

The team from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) measured 1.5 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 0.5 inches which is three percent of average for May 1.
The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack, providing a more accurate forecast of spring runoff than snow depth alone.

Vail Resorts announces 20-80% credit to pass holders for next ski season

They will be providing 2019/20 season pass holders with credits of 20 percent to 80 percent, depending on how often they were able to use that pass during the season.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Pretty typical spring weather is expected this week

Low pressure, almost cutoff, will move into the region starting Thursday. This will increase chances for showers and a few thunderstorms Thursday into the weekend, mainly in the afternoon and early evening hours, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Sierra snowpack at 66% of April 1 average; Statewide it is 53% of average
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/01/2020 - 2:18pmSACRAMENTO, Calif. – The precipitation of March did not do enough to boost the snowpack in the Sierra to high figures, but it did give surveyors better figures than the 47 percent of average one month ago. The manual measurement of the snowpack at Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe showed the snow depth was 43.5 inches with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 16.5 inches. This is 66 percent of the April 1 average at that location southwest of Lake Tahoe.
North Lake Tahoe artists selected for East Shore Trail mural

TRPA approves 6,000 seat Tahoe South Event Center
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/25/2020 - 5:28pmSTATELINE, Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board today unanimously approved the Tahoe Douglas Visitor’s Authority Tahoe South Event Center planned for the parking lot area of Montbleu Casino Resort in Stateline. Edgewood Tahoe has donated the 13.3 acres at the corner of Lake Parkway and Highway 50 needed for the center.

Lake Tahoe Community College to close campus Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/19/2020 - 11:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif, - The entire campus of Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed to students, the public and most employees starting Friday, March 20 due to the quickly evolving COVID-19 situation.
On Thursday, both California Governor Gavin Newsom and El Dorado County issued shelter-in-place orders, the state's order beginning Thursday and the County's Friday night.
The South Lake Tahoe campus was nearing the end of the winter quarter when the announcement was made.
Sierra-at-Tahoe to close "indefinitely" - still chance of Spring reopening

"The health and safety of our guests and employees is our primary concern. During this time of uncertainty, we will do our part to help stop the spread of this virus," the resort spokesperson Sarah Sherman said in a statement.
Vail Resorts announces closures now for season with chance of Heavenly opening for Spring skiing
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/17/2020 - 8:57amFollowing their earlier announcement of temporarily closing all ski resorts due to the coronavirus COVID-19, Vail Resorts today announced all of its North American resorts and retail stores will remain closed for the 2019-20 winter ski season. These closures are amidst the continued challenges associated with the spread of virus across the globe.
Dependent on the COVID-19 situation and weather conditions, Heavenly may reopen in late April/early May. The company may also consider reopening Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado and Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia.
LTUSD and Bread & Broth to deliver meals to South Lake Tahoe students

These two meals were offered by LTUSD at each school.
Bread & Broth 4 Kids has also created a plan to distribute bags of food to youth on their program.
LTCC on snow delay; School lays out its response to COVID-19

LTCC plans on being open this coming week with staff on hand to assist students. They have moved face-to-face Winter quarter final exams to March 16-20 and have put social distancing measures into place on campus to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
Chilly and unsettled weather is expected to persist into the first half of next week with a stormer weather pattern possibly continuing through the end of March according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe to close due to coronovirus concerns
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/14/2020 - 2:52pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) will be joining Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and closing on the advice of El Dorado County due to safety concerns stemming from the coronavirus COVID-19.
BGCLT will be closed the same time frame as LTUSD which will be determined weekly, but at least for the week of March 16-20.
At this time, BGCLT Executive Director Jude Wood said there is a possibility they may not be able to reopen for Spring Break, but that determination will come as soon as possible.
South Lake Tahoe and all other El Dorado County schools to close starting Monday

The decision was made for the safety and wellness of students, families, and school personnel due to the current threat of the world-wide coronavirus COVID-19. There are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in El Dorado County.
Coronavirus concerns change LTCC physical education classes and gym use

They sent out an email to staff and students, letting them know of closures but some do affect community members who use the gym and facilities.

With that in mind, effective immediately LTCC is canceling all community events and outside group meetings planned for on campus to help reduce the chance of exposure and spread. Furthermore, LTCC is canceling all non-essential travel for LTCC employees. These are measures designed to reduce (but not eliminate) the risk of exponential community spread of COVID-19. These measures will be in effect until further notice.

Firewood cutting permits available in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest April 1

Forest officials stress that it is extremely important for firewood cutters to pay special attention to the terms and conditions of their permit.
