Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/14/2016 - 6:31amPeople in South Lake Tahoe woke up to a covering of snow on the ground Thursday morning, and widely scattered light snow showers should continue until 11 p.m. tonight according to the National Weather Service.
There is a lake wind advisory in place for Lake Tahoe until 8:00 p.m. Thursday with winds from the southwest 15 to 25 mph, and gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on the lake will be 2 to 4 feet

U.S. Ski Team officials are supporting the return of World Cup ski racing to the Olympic venue of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows for the first time since 1969.
1960's Green Lantern evolves into modern Coachman Hotel
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/22/2016 - 9:04amA multi-million dollar remodel of the old Green Lantern Motel in South Lake Tahoe has been completed, and emerging out of the dust is the new and trendy Coachman Hotel.
Doors will open to the public on Wednesday, March 23.
The new owners of the hotel, Peter and Justin Watzka, bring with them years of hotel and hospitality management. Peter was the Executive VP of Ritz-Carlton Destination Club and VP of Marketing for Marriott Vacation Club International, while Justin was previously a director with Ritz-Carlton and Marriott Vacation Clubs in Florida and Asia.
Truckee pilots seek record for "Plane Water Skiing" on Lake Tahoe

Not many, but that may change after efforts made by three pilots out of Truckee set out to create a record for Guinness World Records on February 11, 2016.

Traffic on Highway 50 over Echo Summit is still slow moving with the back up for westbound travel backed up near the intersection of Hwy 50 and 89 at the Y.

Active duty military offered season pass to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows for $25

First, they are now offering a season pass to all active duty military in exchange for a $25 donation to the “Military to the Mountains” program, a partnership between Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, High Fives Foundation, Achieve Tahoe (formerly Disabled Sports USA Far West) and Adaptive Training Foundation.

Storm brings much needed water to Lake Tahoe

The National Weather Service in Reno has provided this chart on how much water actually was in yesterday's storm. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, they report the lake rose 1.92 inches and more precipitation is expected today and Thursday.
All waterways through El Dorado County were rising on Monday, prompting local flood warnings which have now expired. Placerville received 3.08 inches of rain in this storm ad they are now at 97% of average for season to date totals.
Several Lake Tahoe skiers named to U.S. Alpine Ski Team

Even though Mancuso was name to the team she will miss out on the season due to hip surgery, but has her sights set on the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley to celebrate early openings

Squaw Valley an Alpine Meadows have been making snow, and combined with what Mother Nature brought, they are able to open. Alpine Meadows is opening for the season on Thursday, November 12 at 9:00 a.m., a month ahead of the planned December 11 scheduled date. They plan on operating Kangaroo Chair as well as limited dining options.

Completion is expected in fall 2016.
Heavenly receives dusting of snow as season pass sales wrap up

While experts have differing opinions, the ski resorts are betting on a big snow year as they wrap up their season pass sales.
October 11 is the last day for Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar resort pass sales which range from $449 for the adult Tahoe Value Pass to $789 for their Epic Pass.
Extreme athlete Erik Roner dies in Squaw Valley skydiving accident
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/28/2015 - 8:31pmSky diver Erik Lars Roner, an MTV extreme athlete, was killed Monday when he flew into a tree during a charity golf event at Squaw Valley Monday morning, authorities said.
Roner, 39, of Tahoe City, Calif., was part of a team doing a performance for a charity golf tournament when he hit a tree and became entangled about 9:45 a.m., the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.
Roner was pronounced dead at the scene; all other skydivers landed safely, officials said.
The accident occurred at an annual golf fundraiser for the Squaw Valley Institute in Olympic Valley.

June 10, 2015 - 6:30pm Chautauqua performer Steve Hale will present “George Whittell, Jr." who lived off the interest generated by the millions he inherited from his parents. His enormous assets allowed him to purchase the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe where he built the Thunderbird Lodge in the 1930s. The house was designed by prominent Reno architect Frederick DeLongchamps. This included a six-hundred-foot tunnel connected to a boat house to berth the “Thunderbird”, his fifty-five-foot mahogany yacht.

Lake Tahoe hikers in Nepal reportedly safe after 7.8 earthquake
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/26/2015 - 6:07pmAdrian Ballinger, a veteran high-altitude mountain guide from the Lake Tahoe-area with six Mt. Everest summits on his resume, was on the mountain when the deadly earthquake struck Nepal, killing thousands and causing havoc on the mountain.
Mel Kaida, 30, assistant operations director with Incline Village-based Tusker Trail Adventures, was also in the region and is reported to be safe, according to Andrew Springsteel, operations director for Tusker.
Squaw Valley to build gondola connected to Alpine Meadows
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/13/2015 - 4:47pmThe consolidation of ski operations in Lake Tahoe continues with news Monday that plans are underway to install a gondola to connect Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski resorts.
The resorts, both owned by Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, reached an agreement with Troy Caldwell, the owner of the property between the base of the resorts, to build a gondola that will run about two miles.

Due to popular demand, community job fairs will be held on both the North and South Shores of Lake Tahoe this spring. Last year's Tahoe Job Fair was held at Squaw Valley and over 1,100 perspective employees attended.
In a joint effort between Harrahs and Harveys, the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaboration, Professional Ski Instructor's Association and the American Assocition of Snowboarder Instructors, the Tahoe Regional Community fair will be held on the South Shore March 31 and on the North Shore on April 1.
Liberty Energy crews work non-stop to restore power
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/11/2015 - 8:16pmWind gusts that reached up to 150 mph last weekend knocked over power poles and toppled trees onto live electrical wires throught the Liberty Energy territory in Northern California.
“Basically, crews have been working non-stop since the first storm arrived on Friday,” according to Mike Smart, Liberty Utilities-CA President. “For the past four days, we’ve reset poles, restrung wire and even made repairs to another utility’s infrastructure because it affected our ability to serve our customers.”

It ended with her first career World Cup win, throwing down a stunning win to upset Canada's Dufur-Lapointe sisters with a huge three-point win in front of a packed house at Deer Valley Resort. Patrick Deneen (Cle Elum, WA) scored his first podium of the season finishing third behind Canada's Mikael Kingsbury.

North Lake Tahoe's Travis Ganong Claims Career First Win
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/28/2014 - 4:08pmTravis Ganong, of Squaw Valley, CA and 2014 Olympian, took advantage of a new course for the men's Audi FIS Ski World Cup tour and punched through for his career first victory, winning the Santa Caterina downhill. Austria's Matthias Mayer was the only one who got close to Ganong, finishing in second, nine-hundredths back. Italy's Dominick Paris was third.
South Lake Tahoe's Sho Kashima named to 2015 US Freestyle Moguls Team

The team was named this week in advance of the Dec. 13 FIS Freestyle World Cup season opener in Ruka, Finland. Kashima, who skis for Heavenly, expects to be able to join the team mid-season. According to his Facebook and Instagram pages he is working hard on rehabilitation.

Sierra ski resorts receive 3" to 10" of snow

Though not as strong of a storm as predicted, ski resorts were still happy to report a few inches. Not all resorts have their storm measurement totals activated yet, but here are the reported resort totals:

The forecast for the next two weeks does not show any sign of wet weather until the 16th and then another storm due over the weekend of November 21/22.
Dozens of employers on hand at Regional Job Fair in Kings Beach

Thirty-six employers will be on hand at the Tahoe Regional Job Fair being held in Kings Beach on November 7.
Employers include TRPA, Hyatt Regency, Northstar, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Raley's, PlumpJack Squaw Valley, Westshore Cafe and Inn, Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe, the Ritz-Carlton, along with many others.
THe fair will be held at the North Tahoe Event Center at 8318 North Lake Blvd. Register for the event on line. The event will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
King Fire community meetings to be held in North Lake Tahoe, Squaw Valley and Foresthill

King Fire community meetings will be held in Squaw Valley this evening and at North Lake Tahoe and Foresthill Wednesday to update the public on the status of the fire.
The meetings will be informational sessions focused on giving the public up-to-date information and answering questions about the fire. They are not a sign that the King Fire poses an imminent threat to any of the three areas.
This evening’s community meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in Olympic Village Lodge, 1901 Chamonix Place, in Squaw Valley.
Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 2:43pm9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.
After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.
Mountain Coworking Alliance allows members to work from California to Colorado

The Tahoe Mountain Lab opened on Ski Run Blvd last year and gives locals and travelers the opportunity to have a dedicated workspace when they need it and now members can travel to other ski resort towns and use other locations.
Other mountain communities that offer the same workspace opportunities are located in Frisco, Avon, Basalt and Durango, Colorado, Jackson Hole, Wyoming as well as in both North and South Lake Tahoe.

Survey being conducted to see if better, faster internet needed in Lake Tahoe

In order to see where the need is, a speed test of your current internet service and a survey is being conducted.
5th Annual Peaks & Paws to raise money for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe

If you're ready for a day of fun in the sun with music, entertainment, beer, wine and dog-centered activities, then the 5th annual Peaks & Paws Festival is for you. This event is one of Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe's biggest fundraiser of the year. It will be held on Saturday, August 23 at the Village at Squaw Valley from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Leashed canine companions are welcome to attend.
