Those are the telling words used to open the film, Effects of Domestic Violence on Children. As our brains grow, they create a blueprint for every new experience we have, the sounds, the touches and the sights. We may not remember what happens to us as a baby but our experiences are forever etched in our brains and create the building blocks of our lives.
Burning Man skydiver killed in Paris attacks
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/17/2015 - 10:35amPierro Jacare Innocenti, 40, of Paris, was killed when gunmen stormed the sold-out Eagles of Death Metal show that Innocenti was attending at the Bataclan Concert Hall. Innocenti posted a photo on his Facebook page of the concert billboard with the comment “Rock!” at 8:45 p.m., less than an hour before three gunmen gunned down 89 people at the venue.
On Friday evening, gunmen and suicide bombers with the Islamic State, or ISIS, almost simultaneously targeted the concert hall, a major stadium, restaurants and bars in Paris, leaving at least 129 people dead and hundreds wounded.

Mental health workshop to focus on suicide, drug overdose and depression

A panel of mental health experts will address the impact of suicide, drug overdose, depression and other issues affecting people in South Lake Tahoe during a workshop on October 21 at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Creekside Room.
There are a host of partners presenting this workshop to the community including
El Dorado County, Barton Health, Tahoe Youth & Family Services and the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP).
Douglas investigators: Elderly Gardnerville couple die in apparent suicide pact
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/15/2015 - 1:08pmAn 86-year-old Gardnerville man who held Douglas County deputies in a Sept. 1 standoff in which the man's wife was deceased inside the home, died Friday from apparent organ failure after ingesting medications, a Douglas County sheriff's sergeant said Tuesday. Investigators say the couple made a suicide pact.
William Lewis, 86, died at Renown Medical Center in Reno. His wife, Phyllis Lewis, 82, was found dead inside the couple's Edlesborough Circle home, said Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Mental health and substance abuse top health concerns in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/10/2015 - 9:53pmThe community has undergone a complete physical and the results are in. Based on the 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment, mental health and substance abuse remain top health concerns in the area.
Barton Health conducted its second Community Health Needs Assessment to identify unmet needs within the community. After identifying these needs, Barton will work with representatives from organizations who provide services for the medically underserved to offer recommendations and a collaborative action plan focused on positively impacting the community’s health.
South Tahoe High on lock down after 911 call about suicidal man with knife
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/20/2015 - 1:54pmA mentally disturbed man holding a knife to his own throat in an apartment near South Tahoe High Wednesday morning resulted in a temporary lockdown on the campus.
Just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning a 911 call came in and the School Resource Officer cautioned the high school to conduct a lockdown until police officers could arrive and assess the situation.
Mental Health Awareness: Suicide is second leading killer of 24 to 35-year-olds

Every day in California, Nevada, and every other state, there are friends, family and co-workers who struggle with emotional pain. And, for some, it's too difficult to talk about the pain, thoughts of suicide, and the need for help.
- Nearly 40,000 Americans commit suicide every year.
- In the U.S., suicide rates are highest during the spring.
- Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-olds and 2nd for 24 to 35-year-olds.
Mental Health Awareness: Education and awareness are key

- 42% of diagnosed students graduate with a high school diploma.
- 48% of diagnosed students drop out of school.
- 50% will serve jail time after leaving school; 20% serve sentences prior to leaving school.
- Currently 12 % of children in America under the age of 18 have a diagnosable
mental illness.
- Among the US population, mental illness impacts 1 in 4 individuals.
- 50% of adult cases of mental illness had signs and symptoms by age 14.
22 is 22 Too Many-Veteran Suicide Awareness March

A study by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs revealed that over 8,000 veterans commit suicide each year in the country, that's 22 per day. As shocking as this figure is, it may even be higher because California, Texas and Illinois did not supply make data available.
With staggering figures such as this, the Western Nevada College's Veteran's Resource Center is holding "Veteran's Suicide Awareness March" on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
South Lake Tahoe's Kenny Curtzwiler will be speaking at the event.

Alfred Villalobos, Stateline resident and key figure in CalPERS scandal, commits suicide
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/14/2015 - 9:58pmAlfred J.R. Villalobos, a former state pension fund board member who faced trial next month on federal corruption and bribery charges, has committed suicide, officials said Wednesday.
The Reno Police Department confirmed that Villalobos' death was a suicide, but the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office declined to provide further details because of an ongoing investigation.
Celebrity Golf Tournament gives over $115,000 to local causes and charities

The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. The LTVA, in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional $67,200 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during tournament week to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Booster Club, Boys and Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship

'Forever Dreams for Veterans' to raise funds for military brain injuries

Almost once an hour a military veteran commits suicide in the United States according the the Department of Veterans Affairs and among those on active duty the number is still sobering, one a day.
In an effort to bring the plight of American military members suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) to the forefront, a Broadway like show and wellness festival are coming to South Lake Tahoe.

SafeTALK is a suicide alertness training for everyone. In only a few hours, you will learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide. Expect to leave safeTALK more willing and able to perform an important helping role for persons with thoughts of suicide.
It is open free of charge to all community members. There are limited seats.To register for the class, please email Janett Massolo jmassolo@health.nv.gov or call 775-688-2964 x 261.
The training will be held at the Carson Valley Medical Center located at 1107 Hwy 395 in Minden, NV.
County Asks for Community Input on Mental Health Services Act Plan for 2014/15

That number doubles in a population where people live below 200% of the poverty level (an annual income of $23,340 for 1 person, $47,700 for a family of 4 for example).
With the current population of El Dorado County at approximately 181,000, that means anywhere between 8,329 and 16,114 people are in need of Mental Health Services.
South Lake Tahoe Teens Signing Pledges to Not Drink or Drive With Drinkers on Prom Night
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/22/2014 - 9:32pmThe facts are startling, and, for lack of a better work, sobering. Studies show that 11% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S. is done so by youth aged 11 to 20, below the legal drinking age.
Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs according to the Center for Disease Control, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.
The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, during the past 30 days:
39% drank some amount of alcohol.
22% binge drank.
American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Office: Marine veteran commits suicide after messaging on Facebook
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 07/12/2013 - 6:21pmOn Friday the El Dorado Sheriff’s Office received information that a suicidal man was in the forest behind Heavenly Ski resort. The man had posted a Facebook video of himself, which depicted him in this forested area, leaving a message to his family.
The man gave the GPS coordinates of his location on the the video. Other recent Facebook postings depicted the subject with a handgun wearing a military gas mask, and other photos of a .308 scoped sniper rifle and military backpack.
Douglas County authorities ask for help in locating missing woman
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 02/19/2013 - 4:32pmDouglas County Sheriff’s Office investigators are seeking the public’s help in locating a missing 63-year-old woman. Kathy Arlana Hammond was reported as a missing person by a friend on Sunday, Feb. 17. Hammond was last seen at approximately 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15.
Hammond is reported to be mentally unstable, and has threatened suicide in the past. Hammond is reported to be driving a 4-door 1993 Subaru Legacy sedan, teal green in color, bearing California license plate 3CKF797.
