STATELINE, Nev. - Douglas County Redevelopment Area No. 2 (RDA2) at Stateline is moving forward despite a move to have it dissolved by Douglas County Commissioner Dave Nelson.

There was an overflow crowd at the commissioner's June 20 meeting at Lake Tahoe. Many of those who could not fit in the meeting room were accommodated with audio feed in the judges' chambers and the bottom floor of the parking garage.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

Thanks to the support of local health organizations, the Tahoe Warm Room was able to help 113 children, women and men during the region’s severe winter months.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted Tuesday to give SnowGlobe a new five-year contract with the criteria that organizers must be working on locating a new location for the event at the end of two years.

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

Throughout the month of May, donation boxes that had been decorated by our local Boys and Girls Club members were located throughout the community. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Spending his workday outdoors and on the water in Lake Tahoe wasn't hard for Tanner Hart to imagine, and since buying Boat Docks Inc from life-long local Doug Gayner in January its something he gets to enjoy every day.

Gainer started the company over 40 years ago, specializing in boat docks in the Tahoe Keys. Now Hart has hit the waterways with the new Boat Docks Barge, something he designed, engineered and built with the help and support of Dan Benson.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the third consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth until school resumes in August. During the school year more than 2,000 local students receive free or reduced cost meals at breakfast and lunch, but that program doesn't cover weekends or summers and that is where Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) comes in. In the 2018-19 school year, BB4K supplied over 180 bags of food each Friday to local youth and last summer 225 bags of food were given away each week.

Over 1,800 runners will be participating in this weekend's 5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon. The race, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA), sends the runners past the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe’s east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow. They wind down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

Dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, Bread & Broth provides two meals every week to anyone who wants to enjoy a hot, nutritious dinner. Currently, due to the fire at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, both dinners are served at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall. B&B’s Monday Meal serves a hot, full course dinner and the Friday Second Serving provides soup and a simple entree. Attending any of B&B’s dinners is a great way to enjoy a great meal!

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation held their annual Rewards for Excellance Scholarship program on May 22 at Harvey's Convention Center, awarding local high school and Lake Tahoe Community College students with scholarships.

Student honorees and their guests enjoyed lunch while 20 scholarships totaling $18,500 were presented by members Julie Gudaitis, Velma Schnoll, Louisa Boone and Carolyn MacRae.

The third annual Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club Tahoe Brewfest will be held this Saturday, June 1 in the Heavenly Cal Lodge parking lot.

VIP tickets are sold out online (a few will be sold on Saturday) and they allow guests into the event at noon. The doors will open for everyone else at 1:00 p.m. and the event ends at 4:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join community members help raise money to get South Lake Tahoe kids on bikes this summer.

The Tahoe Fund is partnering with members of the South Lake Tahoe Community to bring 40 new Specialized mountain bikes, helmets and mountain bike coaching to youth at the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club, SOS Outreach, and the South Lake Tahoe Middle School. The bikes will provide kids greater access to trails in Tahoe and the nearby Bijou Bike Park.

This week at South Tahoe High School, the cold weather continued while students dressed up for “Versus Week,” seniors visited Lake Tahoe Community College day, and athletes brought home gold from the state championships.

The spirit week theme was “Versus.” Students dressed up as nerds versus athletes, tourists vs. locals, rappers vs. country musicians, and more. A spirit rally is being held Friday to support the school’s canned food drive.

Skiers and snowboarders are invited to celebrate spring on the slopes at Squaw Valley with $5 lift tickets on Fridays in June and help a local bike rack program in the process.

Over 3,000 bicycle enthusiasts will be riding the 72 miles around Lake Tahoe on Sunday, June 2 as they participate in the 28th annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Reading can be enjoyed by all South Lake Tahoe students this summer, even without stepping into the library. Summer is a great time to keep Reading and learning and be prepared for fall.

Library cards can be used online for ebooks and downloadable audiobooks whether you're in town, at grandma's house or on vacation somewhere across the globe.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund, the South Lake Tahoe Library was able to purchase over 130 new Spanish and English ebooks and downloadable audiobooks to support students.

Come run or walk with friends and support your community in the 4th annual OMG Fun Run at the Old Meyers Grade on Sunday, June 2, 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Prizes will be awarded for Best Costume, First to Reach the Top and Most Laps for the men, women, and children (12 and under) divisions. Winners in each category and participants who complete at least three laps will have their names posted to their website after the event.

There is a $250 award for the South Lake Tahoe youth team with the most members (at least five) that make it to the top!

A one-day training on identifying mental illness will be held on the LTCC campus on Saturday, May 18, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The title of the training is "Sometimes what hurts the most can't be seen, but sometimes what helps the most is easy to do." Special guest trainer David Woods Bartley will be speaking. He is a renowned speaker on mental health wellness, a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and a TedTalk veteran.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members from all over California came together on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course to celebrate the new DAR Chapter in South Lake Tahoe.

The chapter was officially organized by the National Society on February 5 of this year, and was welcomed to the city with a proclamation at the South Lake Tahoe City Council's April 16 meeting, Sunday's event was the formal recognition of the chapter's status as the newest in California. City Council member Tamara Wallace attended the event and read the proclamation to the attendees.

The Barton Foundation will be awarding $50,000 in grant funding to improve community health across the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. As part of Barton Health’s commitment to community health and collaboration, these annual grants provides funding for programs and services that positively impact the health of the local community. The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) is pleased to present a free Aging & Caregiver educational series in South Lake Tahoe. The series will provide instruction and support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member or friend aged 60 years or older.
