As 2013 draws to a close, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of many this year. It was just a few short years ago, in the midst of the Great Recession, both public agencies and private companies throughout the basin were in the middle of layoffs, service reductions and unemployment hovering above 17%. Concerns regarding economic recovery were significant. Rather than buckling under, we buckled down, got things done and prepared for recovery.

This year’s Festival of Trees and Lights was once again a huge success. The six-day event is a collaborative effort between Barton Health staff, community and Auxiliary volunteers, and sponsors. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, decorated a tree or a wreath, donated an auction item, or sponsored one of our many events! A special thanks to Barton Foundation’s volunteer steering committee who worked all year long to ensure the event was a magical experience.

Sometimes surprises come at the right time. Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. The same center where Kasden’s husband, Gary had just completed a long series of chemotherapy treatments.

With the holiday season now in full swing, it’s only appropriate that the Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) brings Jazz for the Holidays to Northern Nevada for all to enjoy on December 20, 2013 at The Nightingale Hall - University of Nevada. Accompanying the accomplished musicians of the RJO are vocalists Cami Thompson and Kenn Pettiford, international Tap star Sam Weber and performers from the Sierra Nevada Ballet under the direction of Rosine Bena. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Vern Scarbrough, will open the holiday performance which starts at 7:30 pm.

Before the Internet, before television, there was radio, and before radio was Vaudeville. The small orchestras of the radio shows and vaudeville stage performed varied repertoire from short snappy commercials to full-length works by major composers arranged for their size. Trinkle Brass Works presents Portable Masterpieces, a salon/theater orchestra that will bring this music to life at Piper’s Opera House on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Light classical, ragtime and plenty of melodrama. Just like it was in the late 1800's and early 20th century.

Sheriff John D’Agostini is pleased to announce that the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a two year $250,000.00 Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program Grant. The award from the US Department of Justice will be used to assist the Sheriff’s “Crisis Intervention Team” (CIT).

The State of the City address by the Mayor was upbeat, informative and a real pat myself on the back (if any of them actually could) and see all the positive things we have done to improve the city while sugarcoating on how we actually got to a balanced budget.

The Cash Mob lunch on October 8 at Gunbarrel Tavern & Eatery was a success. Fifteen people showed up to try a variety of menu items including beer can chicken, shrimp ‘n grits, and jalapeno bacon mac ‘n cheese at the newest restaurant in the Heavenly Village. Gunbarrel Tavern officially opened their doors on August 30 with a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony.

Visit California’s annual “California SuperFAM,” in conjunction with British Airways, returns to the Golden State, October 10-17, 2013 for the sixth consecutive year. Sixty travel agents from the United Kingdom and Ireland will get the VIP treatment on this fast-paced, educational and entertaining California familiarization (“fam”) tour. Split into five groups, agents will embark on five different themed itineraries designed to allow them to experience all that California has to offer firsthand – from Southern California and the Desert to the North Coast and High Sierra.

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency and Active Aging program are presenting a free educational series in South Lake Tahoe. The series will give instruction and support to persons aged 60 years and older and to their family members and friends. The classes will be held on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. beginning October 21 through November 25, 2013 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel (formerly Embassy Suites), located at 4130 South Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe. The Coalition Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the successful implementation of projects, programs and activities to accomplish the mission of the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program grant as established by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (the Coalition) and managed by Tahoe Youth & Family Services. The Coalition Coordinator will mobilize the community to prevent and reduce youth substance use by effectively representing the Coalition and building partnerships and support in the community.

TahoeChamber and the United States Census Bureau are teaming up to present two workshops focusing on how to navigate through the Census website and the American FactFinder website.

The workshops will be held on September 26 in the TahoeChamber Conference Room at 169 US HWY 50, Stateline, NV. Bring a laptop computer to interactively participate in the workshop. Enjoy a night of playing poker with your friends while helping support Tahoe Youth & Family Services. A Texas Hold'em tournament is going to be held at Lakeside Inn on Tuesday, October 1 at 6 p.m. Beginners and skilled players are welcome as there will be fun for all.

Fernando Vargas, a 25-year veteran of Boys & Girls Clubs, has been appointed Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake Tahoe.

Vargas, 54, brings extensive experience from Clubs throughout the country, most recently in Elko, Nev., to the position. His successful background with fundraising, fiscal management, strategic and youth development initiatives were cited by Jeff Tillman, Club President, as major reasons for his appointment.
