Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

Incline Village Resident Wins Trip to Super Bowl

Sometimes surprises come at the right time. Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. The same center where Kasden’s husband, Gary had just completed a long series of chemotherapy treatments.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

Sheriff John D’Agostini Acquires New Grant

Sheriff John D’Agostini is pleased to announce that the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a two year $250,000.00 Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program Grant. The award from the US Department of Justice will be used to assist the Sheriff’s “Crisis Intervention Team” (CIT).

LTCC Joins Bread & Broth to Provide Hot Meals for Hungry Locals

A hearty group of volunteers from Lake Tahoe Community College donated their time to Bread and Broth recently, helping to prepare and serve a hot meal to hungry locals as part of the Adopt a Day of Nutrition program. Four LTCC managers donned aprons and kitchen gloves to serve food, prepare giveaway bags, and assist with the cleanup.

Forest Service Hosts Field Trip to Upper Truckee River This Week

Everyone is invited to check out progress on the Upper Truckee River Restoration Project in a U.S. Forest Service field trip on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 5 p.m.

The project will replace the existing stream channel with a new channel that is more stable and is connected to the adjacent floodplain, which will provide a better aquatic habitat, support a healthier meadow ecosystem, and reduce the amount of fine sediment that reaches Lake Tahoe.

Friends of the Library Looking for Book Donations For November 16 Sale

Ordinance Passed in City Council to Ban Single Plastic Bag Use

Today the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted to approve the ban on single use plastic grocery bags in the city limits, duplicating their 3-2 vote from the first reading of the ordinance on October 1, 2013.

Council members Hal Cole, Angela Swanson and Brooke Laine all voted in favor of the ban. Tom Davis and JoAnn Conner against.

Letter to the Editor: CA$H MOB LUNCH WAS A HIT!

The Cash Mob lunch on October 8 at Gunbarrel Tavern & Eatery was a success. Fifteen people showed up to try a variety of menu items including beer can chicken, shrimp ‘n grits, and jalapeno bacon mac ‘n cheese at the newest restaurant in the Heavenly Village. Gunbarrel Tavern officially opened their doors on August 30 with a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony.

South Tahoe Middle School Students Treated to Shopping Spree

It took several cashiers and 3 check out lines to process the carts full of clothing, coats and shoes that 120 South Tahoe Middle School students spent the day shopping for at Kmart. Free "Healthy Aging" Series Coming to South Lake Tahoe

Dog Agility Park Opening Celebrated by Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association (SLTPCA) worked in partnership to install several pieces of custom dog agility equipment at Bijou Park. Coalition Coordinator Job Opening

The Coalition Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the successful implementation of projects, programs and activities to accomplish the mission of the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program grant as established by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (the Coalition) and managed by Tahoe Youth & Family Services. 2013 Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Food Fest

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will have its annual signature fundraiser, The Fall Food Fest, on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Harvey’s Convention Center. American Century Championship celebrity golf tourney to give $85,000 for Lake Tahoe charities

Funding opportunities for South Lake Tahoe area charities will once again be made possible after the American Century Championship, Lake Tahoe's celebrity golf tournament, agreed to donate $85,000, according to a Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority news release.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe appoints Fernando Vargas as executive director

Fernando Vargas, a 25-year veteran of Boys & Girls Clubs, has been appointed Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake Tahoe.

Vargas, 54, brings extensive experience from Clubs throughout the country, most recently in Elko, Nev., to the position. His successful background with fundraising, fiscal management, strategic and youth development initiatives were cited by Jeff Tillman, Club President, as major reasons for his appointment.

California Legislature unanimously passes compromise bill

The League to Save Lake Tahoe applauds the California Legislature for unanimously passing SB630, which implements a compromise between California and Nevada to preserve the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
