Tahoe's Search and Rescue team responds to 150-200 calls a year

You're hiking along the trails of Lake Tahoe, fall and break your ankle. How do you get to the hospital? You're exploring the valleys and canyons of the Sierra, it gets dark and you don't know where you are. How do you get to safety? You've fallen on the slippery rocks of a waterfall and can't get out. Who do you call?

El Dorado Search and Rescue (SAR) is the answer to all of these questions and dozens more. Annually, the volunteers and deputies that make up SAR handle between 150 and 200 calls in the county portion of the Tahoe basin (AKA the east slope).

How to talk to teens about marijuana

Talking about marijuana with your kids can be difficult – especially these days, with the drug becoming legalized in some states and the increasingly casual presence of weed in the media and pop culture. But with the right tools and skills, you can have easier, more productive conversations with your teen about marijuana, despite these unique challenges.

One Less Spark Means One Less Wildfire

With the passing of the 4th of July we find ourselves right in the middle of summer here in the Tahoe Basin. Locals and visitors alike recreating in many different ways, from camping to mountain biking, to boating, Lake Tahoe has something for everyone. This summer and particularly this summer due to continued drought conditions, it is important to remember just how fragile the Tahoe Basin is, and that there is a persistent threat of wildfire. Everyone needs to take steps to ensure they are being fire smart in everything they do. Doing the right thing, the wrong way can start a wildfire.

Emergency preparedness: Are you ready for a fire?

Markleville residents are faced with the possibility of having to evacuate if the Washington Fire comes towards their town.

Skyland residents recently took part in a neighborhood fire drill, being told they had to evacuate their homes in 10 minutes.

What would yo take?

That plan should start now, before you are faced with that time of fear and panic.

Prepare a 'Disaster Preparedness Kit.' Items in this kit should last you and your family for three days:

Ready to Run?

Event Date:
July 8, 2015 - 6:00pm

Running has advantages. It burns more calories per minute than walking. It’s a powerful stress reducer. Running also reduces the risk for heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and depression. If you’re active and want to try this vigorous exercise, here’s where to start.

Your “Sweet Spot”
Proper running technique is more important than shoes! Try running barefoot. Where your foot lands, usually between your heel and fore-foot, is your “sweet spot.” Land on your sweet spot, roll forward, and push off. Now, try with shoes.

Be Fire Safe: Outdoor fire pits, legal or illegal?

Fire pits. The outdoor means to a perfect s'more and good conversation around a fire on a cool summer evening. But, in the midst of a drought are they safe? Are they legal when fire restrictions are in place?

There are three fire district jurisdictions just in South Lake Tahoe, along with the U.S. Forest Service, and they all have different rules concerning the backyard fire pit. One thing they all do share is for residents and visitors to be smart about fire and to not be careless.

Learning to be Fire Safe in South Lake Tahoe

With fires already burning out of control in Alaska and Southern California, there is no time like the present to learn how to prevent fires.

The Wildfire Safety Expo was held Saturday in South Lake Tahoe, and kids and adults alike learned not only fire safety tips, but were able to interact with the multiple agencies in the area that fight and prevent fires.

Also on hand at the Expo were law enforcement, TRPA, the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society.

Pine pollen making annual presence known

If you've been in Lake Tahoe this week you know that it is pine pollen season. The light winds have even made the annual spreading of the yellow powder even more evident, that is, if the sneezing and pollen covered cars weren't enough of a clue.

As a long time resident of South Lake Tahoe I just take the arrival of pollen as I do the changing of the seasons, but I thought a little research would help us understand causes, and cures, a bit more.

South Lake Tahoe can create a sustainable economy if we focus on "active tourism." This was the message relayed by the panel of speakers at Wednesday's Tahoe Talk series at Lake Tahoe Community College.

If the 15 page spread about Lake Tahoe in the May edition of Bike magazine is any indication, people know about the activity/recreation based tourism awaiting them in Tahoe, and they're about to come.

Are we ready?,

Just about.

For most, daylight saving time is an exciting sign of spring that comes with a slightly sleepy Monday. But if you're not a morning person to begin with, your mood and productivity can take a dive. In January 2015, new studies in the Journal of American College of Cardiology and JAMA Internal Medicine discussed heart disease. But another risk factor is gaining attention: chronic inflammation.

Hike 500 Miles in One Season

In the summer of 2013, I walked a demanding 500 miles and I'm damn proud of it.

After working 60-80 hour weeks for nine months, living in a crowded city, and becoming one of the thousands of tired, nerve-shaken souls John Muir spoke about, I realized the famous naturalist was right when he said, "going to the mountains is going home."

Free Child ID App available from the FBI

Every year, thousands of children go missing. Understandably, the parents in these situations are frightened and may not be thinking as they would when not under distress.

Accurate information about missing children is necessary immediately after a child goes missing, but with panicked parents this may not be as easy as one would think.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has created an app for iPhones and android phones so parents can keep information about their children at their fingertips.

Benefits of Reading and Singing to Your Child

Can you recall a favorite nursery rhyme from childhood? How about a favorite book? Some of my early favorites were the “Incy Wincy Spider” song and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?” picture book.

Early language development is intricately linked to a child’s exposure to reading, talking, and singing starting from infancy. Though infants may not talk back, research shows a child’s language exposure at an early age predicts his or her success in school.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Christmas Tree fire safety tips

Sallie from the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has these tips to make your Christmas fire safe:

Select a fresh tree with good color and firm, flexible needles that do not easily pull from the branches.

Place the tree in plain water immediately after re-cutting the trunk at least ½” above the old cut. The container you use for your tree should hold 2 to 4 quarts of water. The longer you wait to place your tree in water, the greater the chances are that it will lose the required moisture content to keep it fresh through the holiday season. NEVER place your tree on a wooden stand.

SLTPD adds DUI saturation patrols over holiday weekend

The holiday season has arrived. As Americans prepare for travel and festivities with family and friends, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to remind all drivers that it’s dangerous to drive after drinking. You have to choose your role before drinking begins: will you drink or will you drive? Remember, even if you only have a little bit to drink and think you’re “okay to drive,” you could still be over the legal limit, because Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.

Prevent house fires: Can Your Ashes

Area fire departments respond to fires every year that are caused by people leaving their fireplace or wood stove ashes in a paper bag on their home's deck. These accidents can easily be prevented with correct handling of ashes.

"Can Your Ashes" is a campaign that informs the public of these inherent dangers.

Embers, often concealed in what appears to be cold ashes, can remain hot enough to kindle a fire for several days.

To safely dispose of ashes, fire officials offer these tips:

• Never store ashes in bags or boxes.

Prevent the Holiday Bulge: Ten Healthy Eating Tips

The holidays and their food celebrations are almost here! Sound wonderful? Many love the holidays, but dread the annual resolution to lose weight. Consider this: if you eat 500 extra calories a day for two months, you could gain nearly 10 pounds.

Limit holiday weight gain with the following tips.

Be selective. At a party, scan the food choices and select the best first. Skip snack foods available “anytime” like chips, crackers, pretzels, and cheese.

Fill up, not out. Alternate high calorie treats with low calorie vegetables and beverages.
