America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride and Tour de Tahoe postponed
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/17/2020 - 11:55amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The organizer of the 29th annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride and the 18th Tour De Tahoe has announced the 2020 events will not happen. Bike the West tried to merge the two popular rides after the America's Most Beautiful was postponed earlier this year. They were to take place on September 13 but current COVID-19 restrictions and setbacks with reopening phases governed by local, county and state health agencies have led them to postpone and move to 2021.

Originally set for Sunday, June 7, it has been rescheduled to combine with the 18th annual Tour de Tahoe, set for Sunday, September 13, 2020. This due to the uncertainty of current and changing CDC coronavirus COVID-19 restrictions and mandates by national, state and county health agencies.

Amgen Tour of California men's and women's stages return to South Lake Tahoe

A favored site for the women’s race, South Lake Tahoe will once again host the men for the Stage 6 finish and welcome back the women for the fourth year in a row on May 18. 2018.
AEG, the world’s leading sports and live entertainment company, made the announcement Thursday.

Ride the 72 miles around the lake which include a challenging 800-foot climb to a rest stop overlooking Emerald Bay and a 1,000 foot climb to Spooner Junction.
Late, same-day registrations will be accepted as long as spaces are available.
Caltrans project outlined to South Lake Tahoe community
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/12/2017 - 10:17pmFor the next three summers, Caltrans crews will be in town to work on their U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe Highway Improvement Project, and Caltrans spoke with locals Wednesday evening about what they could expect during the project which starts May 1, 2017 and should end by winter, 2019. This will be their last Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP) task to collect and treat stormwater runoff which accomplishes several other goals as well.

Two cyclists hit by drunk driver in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/10/2016 - 7:09pmTwo bicyclists riding westbound on Highway 50 near Lodi Avenue in South Lake Tahoe sustained minor injuries after they hit by a suspected drunk driver just before 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
The driver, 27-year-old Charles English of South Lake Tahoe, fled the scene and was later located by law enforcement, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Travis Cabral.
Amgen Tour for both men and women returns to South Lake Tahoe

Professional cyclists will return to the lake for the men's Stage 5 finish and the women's Stage 1 start on Thursday, May 19, 2016. The men will take off in Lodi, Calif. and finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. The women will also start/finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort on May 19.
1,800 cyclists to bike around the lake in Sunday's Tour de Tahoe

More than 1,800 riders are expected to take on the 4,000 feet of climbing involved in the ride which continues to gain in popularity. Besides recreational riders there will also be teams riding to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Smart towns know how to capitalize on active and bike tourism

If the 15 page spread about Lake Tahoe in the May edition of Bike magazine is any indication, people know about the activity/recreation based tourism awaiting them in Tahoe, and they're about to come.

It's race weekend in South Lake Tahoe!

On Friday, racers competed in the Emerald Bay Full and Half Marathons. There are 10 different races on Saturday: The Cal Neva Marathon, the Tahoe Nevada Half Marathon, a 5 mile Kayak Race, two and five mile Stand Up Paddle Races, Swim Races, Duathlon, Kids Fun Run, Super Hero 5k, 72 mile Loop the Lake Ultra Race and the Tahoe Double Marathon.
If that weren't enough action, Sunday is the main event plus 10k and 20 mile races.

Expect surge of cyclists on South Lake Tahoe roads Sunday morning

The participating cyclists are taking off from the parking lot of MontBleu every 15 minutes between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and riding clockwise around Lake Tahoe back to MontBleu.
For people not wanting to ride all 72 miles there is a 35 mile Boat and Bike where participants ride the Tahoe Queen from the Ski Run Marina to the North Shore at 7:15 a.m. From there they will ride clockwise back to the South Shore.
South Tahoe High student makes 3rd trip around lake for charity
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/06/2014 - 10:29pmSouth Tahoe High Junior Mykala Muskovitz is spending Sunday participating in Tour de Tahoe, the annual bike ride around Lake Tahoe. The 16 year old doesn't just ride, which most of us would find as a big enough accomplishment, she raises money while doing so.
For the third year, Mykala is riding to raise money for a local charity.
In 2011 as an 8th grader, she made the 72 mile ride in 6 hours and raised over $2,000 for Boys and Girls Club and for winter hats and gloves for children at Live Violence Free.
Volunteer opportunities the community to help the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/13/2014 - 9:43pmThe Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition is providing a free Bike Valet at the Kiwanis Community Fair in South Lake Tahoe at LTCC. They need volunteers to work 2-4 hour shifts on Saturday 8/30 and Sunday 8/31 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 .pm. This is a fun event and a great way to get involved with the Coalition.
The second volunteer opportunity is on September 7 which marks the 12th Annual TOUR DE TAHOE event produced by Bike The West. The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition hosts the final rest stop on Spooner Summit, providing snacks, water, and support.

Since this will have an impact on local businesses, residents and commuters, a forum was held on Wednesday in order to inform the community about the impact.
A full house was on hand in the TahoeChamber conference room to listen to representatives from Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and the road construction company.

While some riders were faster, Mykala's ride was filled with passion and compassion as she rode to raise money to sponsor under privileged dancers at Lake Tahoe's Shining Stars and to buy winter hats and gloves for the children at Live Violence Free.
