Boating under the influence focus of Lake Tahoe campaign this weekend

As the summer recreational boating season gets into full swing, several law enforcement agencies are ramping up enforcement of boating under the influence laws on Lake Tahoe and other bodies of water. This is all part of a national safety campaign that begins this weekend, June 25 and 26 to heighten awareness and enforcement. Operation Dry Water focuses on deterring boaters from boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Live at Lakeview concert series returns on June 23

Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series returns Thursday, June 23 for its fifth season at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe. Promising a diverse selection of entertainment, organizers start off the ten-week series with Live at Lakeview veteran performer and world-renowned percussionist, Paa Kow from Ghana, West Africa.

Lionel Ritchie added to Harvey's Outdoor Concert series

The singer behind hits "All Night Long" and "Say You, Say Me" will be performing on stage during the 2016 Summer Concert Series at Harvey's Outdoor Arena.

Lionel Ritchie was announced as the latest artist to join the long summer line-up. He'll be making a stop in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, August 13 at 8:00 p.m. Presale tickets go on sale June 8, with regular sales starting June 10 at ticketmaster.com.

5th annual Tahoe Blue Vodka Bloody Mary contest

Twelve of Tahoe's best bartenders will be competing in the 12th annual Tahoe Blue Vodka Blood Mary competition on Sunday, June 12 at Steamer's Bar from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“This is the only Bloody Mary competition in the Lake Tahoe basin, and we have hand selected the 12 best bartenders from around the lake,” said Mike Peron of FNCTN, one of the event organizers. “From what they’ve shared with us so far about their recipes, our guests are going to be blown away!”

Concert series at Heavenly Village expanding and bringing in bigger acts

On any given day of the year, one can find live music in South Lake Tahoe, and this summer's lineup has just increased by 33 with the schedule for the free Heavenly Music series being released.

This is our fourth year, and we've expanded," said Dreu Murin of Dreu Murin Productions.. "We searched all top bands in the area, Bay Area, Las Vegas and Sacramento. This is going to be exciting!"

Heavenly Village has added staging and lighting in order to create a more effective stage for the acts. If the crowds at the opening weekend are any measure, the move was a successful one.

Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe June Day Jamboree and Plant Sale

National Day of Civic Hacking to improve government-resident partnerships

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the "Hack Tahoe" Code for America Brigade are partnering to enhance the effectiveness of government through the use of technology.

This new partnership brings community members together through Code for America, a non-profit organization on a mission to make government services simple, effective, and easy to use. Code for America has launched more than 2,300 projects with 100 government partners. Local Code for America chapters are called brigades and are organized by local volunteers.

National Safe Boating Week

National Safe Boating Week is May 21-27, 2016 and is the launch of the 2016 North American Safe Boating Campaign. This yearlong campaign promotes safe and responsible boating and the value of voluntary, consistent life jacket wear by recreational boaters through the national theme, Wear It!

The local US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-04 in South Lake Tahoe is promoting the Wear It! campaign and hopes it will remind boaters of the importance of boating safely, including consistent life jacket wear, boating sober, knowing navigational rules and having a proper lookout.

The Harveys Outdoor Summer Concert Series added another music icon when they announced Stevie Wonder will be headed to South Lake Tahoe during his "Songs in the Key of Life" tour.

Pet of the Week: Troy

This week's Lake Tahoe Humane Society Pet of the Week is Troy. He is about three-years-old. Troy prefers to be an only cat, and has been living as an indoor-outdoor cat (though cats in Lake Tahoe being kept indoors is much safer for them). He ended up at Animal Services because he got out, and his owners never looked for him.

County offers $20 cat adoptions in May during "Feline Fridays" and "Caturdays"

Looking for a sweet family pet? El Dorado County Animal Services is promoting the adoption of adult cats currently at its shelters in Diamond Springs and South Lake Tahoe. Adult cats can be adopted at either shelter for only $20 on Fridays and Saturdays during the month of May 2016, as part of Animal Services “Feline Fridays” and “Caturdays” special events.

Celebrities teeing up for Gene Upshaw Golf Tournament

NFL Hall of Famers, former Major League Baseball players and other sports celebrities will gather July 17-18 to once again pay tribute to the former Oakland Raider at the 8th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at the Schaffer’s Mill Golf & Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.

Upshaw, who often played in the Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, died of pancreatic cancer in 2008 at Tahoe Forest Hospital.

Tahoe Trails Summit to discuss the present and future of biking in Lake Tahoe

New art gallery opening in South Lake Tahoe

The 2015 SnowGlobe video has been released, and it shows the best of the South Shore from Emerald Bay to Lake Tahoe Community College, the venue for the annual three-day music festival.

South Lake Tahoe man seriously injured in felony hit and run in Meyers

A South Lake Tahoe man was hit by a car on Saturday night, resulting in serious injuries and an arrest for felony hit and run.

Scott Murphy, 26, was walking along the eastbound side of Highway 50, east of Apache Avenue, talking to his girlfriend on the phone at about 9:45 p.m. on March 26 according to the California Highway Patrol. A BMW driven by Roberto Luna, 21, was also heading east and, for unknown reasons, allowed the right front side of his car to hit Murphy. Luna, of San Francisco, Calif., was driving an estimated 50 mph, ten miles above the posted speed limit.

Spring events on the historic V & T Railroad

The historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad (V & T) is the most famous of all American Short Line railroads and dubbed the "Queen of the Short Line." Even though construction began on the original tracks and train in 1869, people can still enjoy riding the old steam and diesel trains from Carson City to Virginia City, Nevada.

Youth use drums to grow while at Juvenile Treatment Center

Contest for Nevada high school students to design new welcome signs

New "Welcome to Nevada" signs designed by high school students will start appearing on the state's roads this summer.

In a contest presented by the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Governor Brian Sandoval’s office, the Department of Education and the Department of Transportation, high school student designers have been called upon to create the new signs.

Time is running out and all entries need to be submitted by March 25, 2016.

Mark Mastrov, a Sacramento Kings co-owner and founder of 24-Hour Fitness, is selling his waterfront Lake Tahoe home in Glenbrook, Nev., for $35 million.

SnowGlobe charges and fire code change voted on at SLT City Council meeting

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Code has changed, much to the appreciation of both homeowners and contractors who had to deal with different codes, depending on the location of the home, City or in the County.

The council voted to remove restrictions on the fire sprinkler code (Chapter 5.20) to be more in line with Lake Valley Fire District. The City's stricter code confused contractors who build houses in the city, and in the county, and it was also found to be cost prohibitive for homeowners wishing to remodel.

St. Patrick's Day DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe

With St. Patrick's Day being one of the biggest holidays centered around partying, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department is having a DUI Checkpoint as well as extra patrols on the roads to help lower deaths and injuries.

The checkpoint will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. The location has not been disclosed.

Tibetan Monks returning to South Lake Tahoe

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are returning to South Lake Tahoe from April 1 to April 6 with a full schedule of ancient and colorful participatory activities, Dharma talks, meditations, and cultural rituals to promote inner healing.

Events, unless otherwise noted, will be at the Blue Angel Cafe, located at 1132 Ski Run Blvd.

All events are donation based and all proceeds will go towards funding the construction of the Phukhang College House at Gaden Shartse, which houses over 600 exiled monks in the Tibetan Refugee Zone in India.

A play you'll be dying to go to at Lake Tahoe Community College

Bodies will be dropping like flies as mystery, chaos, and laughter prevail during The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, a Hollywood murder mystery being performed by by the Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The play, written by John Bishop and directed by Susan Boulanger, will be at the school's Duke Theater March 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees on March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

Former South Lake Tahoe resident and LTCC alumnus winner in international writing contest

Former South Lake Tahoe resident and Lake Tahoe Community College graduate, Ryan Row (pen name: Alan Wor) has been officially announced as a winner in the "Writers of the Future" contest sponsored by L. Ron Hubbard. The contest, one of the most prestigious writing competitions, is in its 32nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction.
