September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. During this month, the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library invites you to demonstrate your love of reading, by visiting us and either showing us an existing library card, or signing up for a new one. All participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win great prizes!

Tahoe Arts Project Annual Holiday Festival

Tahoe Arts Project's Annual Holiday Festival at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose Room on Saturday, November 16 from 10 am to 5 pm.

Food, crafts, music and fun is on tap for the day's activities.

If you'd like to have a boothreserve a space, the deadline is October 16. All crafters and artists are invited, from beginner to professionals. Booth prices are just $50 for a 10 x 10 booth space with no additional commission fees charged.

2nd Annual Tahoe Arts Project Holiday Festival Needs Vendors

Tahoe Arts Project, TAP, had a successful Holiday Festival last year and is looking to make this year's even bigger. They have expanded the event my making it longer and in a new, larger venue at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose room. It will be held on Saturday, November 16 from 10 am to 5 pm.

TAP expects twice as much foot traffic, and to ensure this they will not be charging an admission fee for the public as they did last year.

4.2 Magnitude Earthquake near Reno, NV

A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported Monday afternoon one mile from Spanish Springs, Nev., near Reno. The report issued by the U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor occurred at 5:51 p.m. local time at a depth of 10.6 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was six miles from Sun Valley, Nev., nine miles from Sparks, Nev., 11 miles from Reno and 35 miles from Carson City, Nev. It was felt as far away South Lake Tahoe, Grass Valley and Folsom, CA.

Bill Morgan, author of "Six Days in Siberia" to discuss his books

Local author Bill Morgan (pen name Wade Morgan) will be discussing his book, Six Days in Siberia, a suspense thriller with overtones of a spy novel on October 1 at 6 pm at the SLT Library. The author has over 50 years of experience as a soldier, civil engineer, forest ranger, director of an environmental regulatory agency, management consultant and technical writer. Mr. Morgan has been to Siberia three times, including an assignment in the town of Baikalsk where he conducted a seminar on conflict resolution for officials of that town.

Local Authors to Read Their New Book "The Crazy Club Gets its Start"

The Friends of the Library are excited to present Christie Rassuchine (Higman) and Robyn Lindner, two authors who grew up in Tahoe. They will be reading from their new book. The story is about a group of elementary school students who form their own club and deal with bullying, acceptance, and what it feels like to be the new kid at school. The characters in the story are in third grade, but the book appeals to kids throughout elementary school.

This is a free, fun event and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Book sale and signing to follow.

Celio Ranch Transports Visitors to a Bygone Era

It doesn’t take long to immerse yourself into the history of the Celio Ranch as you walk through the fields and old farm buildings. Spread over 100 acres at the base of Echo Summit near South Lake Tahoe, the Celio Ranch shows what it was like in years gone by.

If you can tune out the sound of an occasional car engine or airplane you can imagine what these early settlers found as they farmed and created a large family business 150 years ago.

Steve Martin, Edie Brickell bring bluegrass revival to Lake Tahoe at MontBleu

Local poet, LTCC faculty member Janet Smith wins national award

South Lake Tahoe poet and LTCC English faculty Janet Smith has won the 2013 Guy Owen Prize for her poem “The Children’s Section.” The poem, for which Smith received $1000, will appear in the fall issue of the “Southern Poetry Review.”

Poet Arthur Smith chose the poem from a short list of finalists.

“The subject matter, the reading experience in childhood, could have been easily sentimentalized, but the poet consistently pulls back from that with an even more powerful detail which sees into the heart of the creation of the imagination,” he said.

Barton Foundation golf tournament raises more than $14,000 for Community Health Endowment

Barton Foundation's 19th annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser held on Thursday, June 20 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course raised more than $14,000 for Barton’s Community Health Endowment fund. The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.

Avant-garde duo La Fin Absolute du Monde to play in South Lake Tahoe July 19

Neo-noir, avant-garde duo La Fin Absolute du Monde have released their third E.P. titled 'Descend,' featuring their first collaborations with outside producers, and are touring California and the Northwest this Summer, beginning in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, July 19 at Whiskey Dicks.

The duo wrapped up their first U.K. tour in support of 'Descend' in April where they traversed the U.K. on buses and public transportation, and are now beginning the Summer leg of their 2013 U.S. tour.

South Lake Tahoe jail inmates enrolled in culinary program win at county fair

In 2007 the El Dorado Sheriff’s Department formed a partnership with the Lake Tahoe Community College to expand the College’s existing culinary arts program to the Sheriff’s Tahoe jail.

Every year the inmates test their quality by entering the El Dorado County Fair in the Baking and Fiery Fair categories. Since 2007 the inmates have amassed over 70 first, second, and third place ribbons. This year was no exception. The inmates in the culinary arts program earned a total of 31 ribbons: 12 First Place, 11 Second Place, and 6 Third Place ribbons.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center summer programs begin July 5

The Lake of the Sky Amphitheater programs at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center begin July 5 and continue every Friday evening through the end of August. The series kicks off Friday, July 5, with "Wild Things" featuring an educational look at Sierra Nevada native animals live on stage at 7 p.m.

Programs in July include: “Snowshoe Thompson” on July 12 at 7 p.m.; “Winged flight at Night” on July 19 at 8:30 p.m.; and “Fly Fishing in the Lake Tahoe Basin” on July 26 at 6:30 p.m.

LTCC Summer Classes Emphasize Fun New Ways to Learn

Lake Tahoe Community College’s summer lineup includes many brand-new classes that educate and enlighten while entertaining learners. Tahoe Pride celebrates LGBT month

For Tahoe Pride, it’s all about developing a tolerant and diverse community. Gregory Cremeans founded Tahoe Pride in 2010 as a way to bring people out of the closet and together through social gatherings and other events.

The group’s mission: to create a safe, welcoming haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents and to promote education and communication throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Tahoe SnowFlakes figure skaters head to Anaheim competition after 2nd place showing

The 'Tahoe Snowflakes' are South Shore's first synchronized figure skating team. On June 16, 2013, they took second place at the ISI competition held at the South Tahoe Ice Arena. This was their first competition. They are now headed to the ISI Worlds held in Anaheim, Calif. They will compete on July, 27, 2013.
