Four men arrested in South Lake Tahoe incidents Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Wednesday was a busy day for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD). Four people were arrested in two separate incidents.

SLTPD has been doing a significant amount of proactive directed enforcement towards any possible Fentanyl in South Lake Tahoe after the overdose deaths of four residents on February 12.

Enrollment now open for LTUSD students new to the district

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Enrollment for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten for the 2024/25 school year is now open. Parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Registration is also open for all grades through 5th grade at this time.

Once the online enrollment is completed (https://laketahoe.asp.aeries.net/air), LTUSD will need additional paperwork (see below). Your school of residence will contact you for a registration appointment.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe keeps slopes open late on Fridays, announces other specials

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is bringing back its popular “Open Late Fridays” starting this Friday, February 23. For the rest of the season, the resort will stay open two additional hours on Fridays, spinning select chairlifts until 6 p.m. and making the most of longer days and mid-winter snow conditions. The two-hour extension of its operations on Fridays allows skiers and riders to take “bonus runs” or kick off the weekend with an afternoon on the mountain.

Two new shows have been added to the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey's Tahoe: Dan + Shay, and Lake Tahoe is for Lovers. Country music stars Dan + Shay embark on their Heartbreak on the Map Tour this month, and it has been extended into the summer. The three-time Grammy Award winners will have Jake Owen and Dylan Marlowe on the tour with them.

Their Lake Tahoe stop is Sunday, September 15 at 7 p.m. Dan + Shay will be the new coaches on The Voice for the upcoming season.

Raley’s Food For Families donates over 100 stuffed bears to Carson Valley Health ER

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The wonderful Carson Valley community came through yet again with the donation of over 100 stuffed collector bears from Raley’s Food For Families. The bears were donated to the Carson Valley Health Emergency Department and East Fork Fire first responders. These bears provide comfort during a scary time for our youngest residents experiencing health emergencies.

Five ultra-athletes will retrace the steps of John "Snowshoe" Thompson's inaugural mail route which he began on January 3, 1856, from Placerville, Calif. to Genoa, Nev., 90 miles away and across the snowbound Sierra Nevada.

The Snowshoe Thompson Expedition team will complete their journey over five days and carry a GPS tracker enabling live updates of their progress which followers can track here.

Kiwanis holding public fentanyl awareness meeting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Have you heard of The CAPP FUND? Back in 2020, a month before the world shut down, the CAPP Fund made its debut. A small, all-volunteer nonprofit located in South Lake Tahoe, the CAPP Fund intends to increase access to higher education by helping local high school seniors with the costs of 4-year college application fees. The goal is to give more young adults the opportunity of a college education by taking away the small barrier of the application fees.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin until 10 a.m. Wednesday. After a fairly mild Sunday before the next storm system arrived, a wetter storm is now in the area. It is expected to bring heavy wet Sierra snow with good spillover rains into lower valleys though daytime highs remain mild. The timing of the heaviest rain/snow will be Sunday night into Monday, but heavy snow showers will likely persist through early Wednesday. Significant impacts to travel are likely in the Sierra to end the holiday weekend.

Main trails to popular Burney Falls to close during 2024 Season

Fact Check: Debunking misinformation about Lake Tahoe's black bears

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – In recent weeks, misinformation about black bears has been circulating online and on flyers posted throughout the Lake Tahoe community. The Tahoe Interagency Bear Team (TIBT) is a collective of bear experts across state and local agencies who study and understand these animals and have devoted much of their professional lives to ensuring the health and well-being of the Lake Tahoe Basin’s black bears.

Winter Weather Advisory and Storm Warning through Wednesday at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin for 10 a.m. Saturday through 4 a.m. Sunday. That will be followed by a Winter Storm Warning from 4 p.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

For the Winter Weather Advisory, a quick storm will be dropping snow over the Sierra. Snow accumulations at lake level could be up to one inch, and up to 5 inches at higher elevations, with the highest accumulations along and west of SR89.

STPUD updates code for water restriction days and times in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Updates have been made to the water conservation code in South Lake Tahoe, changing the dates and times for watering. During their meeting on February 15, the South Tahoe Public Utility District (District) Board of Directors adopted the updates to comply with the State of California water conservation regulations.

The current codes were implemented in 2015 and have not been substantially updated in 20 years. In that time, the State of California has signed into law multiple water conservation mandates.

Tahoe Lake Elementary School students sell heart necklaces for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hundreds of salt dough necklaces were created by the third and fourth graders at Tahoe Lake Elementary School in Tahoe City for Valentine's Day.

The students sold all the heart necklaces they made at their school and made $140. They will be donating all of the money raised to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) in South Lake Tahoe.

NDOT gathering public input on Draft U.S. 50 Tahoe East Shore Corridor Management Plan

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – A new draft of the U.S. 50 Tahoe East Shore Corridor Management Plan has been released by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), and the public is invited to provide feedback. The plan establishes a blueprint for potential future improvements to U.S. 50 on Tahoe’s east shore between the U.S. 50/State Route 28 junction and the Nevada-California state line. After the previous plan met with concern from the public with reduced lanes in some areas to make it safer for left turns, there are no reductions in the number of highway lanes in the new draft.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The friends of Keely Pereira of South Lake Tahoe have started a GoFundMe fundraising account to help with the family's funeral and memorial service expenses. Keely was one of the four people who lost their lives in South Lake Tahoe on Monday.

"Keely was a bright spark in this world, a power of nature, and will be deeply missed. She touched the lives of so many and it’s our turn to give back to her family in these hard times," was stated on her fundraiser.

Abraham was a cherished member of the community, known for his kindness, generosity, and infectious laughter. His sudden departure has left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends, and they are now faced with the daunting task of arranging his funeral and honoring his memory.

In their continuing support of Bread & Broth’s mission to ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, Heavenly Mountain Resort hosted Bread & Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on February 5. The $350 Adopt a Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorship fee is funded by Vail’s EpicPromise grant which designated $4,200 to host twelve Adopt A Days in 2024 and provides each of the local Vail Resorts, Heavenly Mountain Resort, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort, the opportunity to send their team members to participate in their sponsorship meals.

Friday Night RATS Community Race League returns to Heavenly

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Friday Night RATS Community Race League is returning to Heavenly Mountain Resort starting on February 16. The races take place on the World Cup Run with check-in and registration at the Foundation Building by the tram.

There is a maximum of five racers on each team - the best three times races will be scored. Handicaps are given for age, gender, and discipline. If you don't have a team, no worries, organizers can form teams with other racers.

GoFundMe fundraiser started for one of Monday's victims

Clifford Joy was one of the four people who were found deceased in a South Lake Tahoe home on Monday morning. He leaves behind a wife and three small children.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been started by the sister of Clifford's wife Katrina Joy.

Cliff was a hard-working man who lived for his family. His death was completely unexpected and he did not have any type of life insurance to help cover expenses in such an event. Friends are hoping to raise enough to cover the funeral costs and help Katrina and their children as they navigate life without her partner.

Congressman Kevin Kiley was the guest speaker after attending earlier a reception honoring John Cristando of John’s Cleaners for 55 years of being in business in South Lake Tahoe and his service in World War II.

Letter: Vacancy tax proposal didn't think of all the ramifications

After spending at least twenty years vacationing annually in South Lake Tahoe, my husband and I purchased a small second home in SLT in October of 2017. We come up to SLT for the summer months and sometimes spend the Thanksgiving and/or the Christmas holidays there. Sometimes we come up for my birthday. If we have family or friends who want to come to Tahoe, we will drive up from Palm Desert where we live (a nine-hour drive) and use our vacation home to house and entertain our visitors.

Christopher D. McClure, 52, after a short battle with cancer passed away on January 30, 2024, at Renown Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on February 11, 1971, in Anaheim, California, the son of John W. and Karen J. (Buran) McClure.

Candlelight vigil to honor the lives lost this week to be held in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community is invited to join South Lake Tahoe Mayor Cody Bass for a citywide candlelight vigil to honor the lives lost earlier this week and to support and comfort one another through this difficult time.

South Lake Tahoe residents Abraham Lemus, Adam Joy, Keely Pereira, and Douglas County, Nev. resident Clifford Joy all passed away. The first who found them did CPR, as did the first responders, and doses of Narcan were administered.

Douglas County School Board passes on superintendent candidate Ramirez

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - There was another passionate packed house on Tuesday to hear the Douglas County School Board (DCSB) vote on its candidate for superintendent, John A. Ramirez, Jr. Many of those in attendance wore the familiar red shirts and carried signs including those that stated "My Voice Doesn't Matter" and "Don't hire a liar."

Dear Editor: As a bon a fide Tahoe local (I’ve lived in Tahoe for the majority of my life - I left after high school to go to college and decided to return home to start my career and raise a family), I’ve learned and seen that it usually takes working two jobs or one job more than 40 hours to make a go of it. I’ve seen many characters come and go here due to the transient nature of a tourist town.

Some love it here so much that they are willing to do what it takes.
