Latest storm passing Lake Tahoe, chain controls up - Bigger snowfall expected Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was windy and snowy overnight around the Lake Tahoe Basin with gusts over the Sierra ridge peaking out at 137 mph overnight at Alpine Summit. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday with the Lake Wind Advisory up until 7:00 p.m.

Both Sierra-at-Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain Resort are reporting 1" of new snow this morning, so far. Kirkwood reports 3" of new snow.

Next on the horizon is a new storm with a Winter Storm Watch in effect for the day Thursday. Heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 14 inches for Truckee and Lake Tahoe, with amounts 18 to 24 inches for the High Sierra possible. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph with Sierra ridges over 100 mph.

Chain controls are in place Tuesday and should drop as the day progresses. The forecast calls for a high near 35 and partly sunny skies as the storm passes.
