Whittell and South Tahoe softball and baseball post season update

South Tahoe's girls softball team started off their Northern Nevada NIAA Division 1-A playoff season right, with a Thursday morning win over Elko, 8-1, but things didn't go the Viking's way after that. In Thursday afternoon's game against #1 seed Churchill County, the SLT girls lost a nail-biter, 1-0. During Friday's third round, South Tahoe High was matched up against Spring Creek, the host of the tournament. The home field advantage led them to a 8-6 win over STHS. Fernley has already made it to the championship game, with the opponent being decided Saturday morning with a game between Churchill County and Lowry.

On the South Tahoe Boys' side, the Vikings lost both of their playoff games, wrapping up their 2016 season on the road at Spring Creek High. Their Thursday game against Elko ended up in a Viking loss 12-2. On Friday, their game was against Churchill County, which STHS lost 10-3.

Over at Whittell High School, both their softball and baseball teams headed to the NIAA-Division IV Northern playoffs as well. The Warrior baseball team is still in the playoff hunt, with a split of their first two games in the four-team tournament field at Carlin High School. In Friday's first game, Whittell lost to Mineral County 8-4. They followed up that game with a win over Virginia City, 8-5. They head to the diamond on Saturday morning with a 10:00 a.m. game against Wells. The winner of that game heads to the Championship Game at 12:45 p.m. against Mineral County.

The Whittell Warriors softball team is also still in the mix, and headed to another round on Saturday morning after losing to Wells by a score of 11-4, followed by a win over Smith Valley 9-4. Their 10:00 a.m. game will be against Eureka who made it through the day with two wins. The winner of that game moves to the Division IV Northern Championship against Wells at noon.
