COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe and surrounding counties

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The County's Public Health Department is reporting four new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County, two men, two women with one each in the areas of Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz; Diamond Springs/El Dorado; North County; and South County.

This brings the total number of cases to 60, with 50 recoveries and ten active cases. To date, 3,324 tests have been administered to residents with 131 of those new Tuesday.

Twenty people in the Lake Tahoe region of the county have tested positive. This region includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Kyburz, and Tahoma.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An arrest has been made in the 2013 Cold Case murder of Manpreet Singh after a witness watched a video created by the El Dorado County Cold Case Task Force.

Tahoe Chamber cancels 2020 Business Expo

The Tahoe Chamber has canceled its 2020 GO Local Business EXPO. They had rescheduled their spring event and moved to May 29 but with current closures and COVID-19 related restrictions, it won't be held.

The popular event will return in the spring of 2021.

"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions placed on our community by California Governor Newsom and Nevada Governor Sisolak, the Chamber believes that this cancellation is a precautionary decision that will protect the health of our community, businesses, and staff members," the Chamber said in a statement.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Since Friday there have been two new cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County. They are both in South County, one male, one female, 65+ and 18-49. This brings the total in the county to 56. There have been three new recoveries, so now 48, and eight active cases. To date, 3,193 residents have been administered tests in the county, with 258 since Friday.

Twenty people in the Lake Tahoe region of the county have tested positive. This region includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Kyburz, and Tahoma.

Body found in Douglas County identified as missing Colorado man

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The body of a man found in the hills off the roadway near Jack Wright Pass in Douglas County on April 28 has been identified as 45-year-old Lance Scott Durkac from Boulder, Colorado.

Lake Tahoe Basin, El Dorado County and Sierra roadwork schedule for May 11-16

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is working on several projects in the Lake Tahoe area as well as El Dorado County and the Sierra.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected in late spring 2020. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled.

Deadline extended for public comment on Lake Tahoe West Shore restoration project

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The planned restoration project on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe is a big one, covering 59,000 acres, and will provide a science-based, all-lands approach to guide restoration approaches on the West Shore over the next two decades to increase the resilience of ecosystems and human communities.

Man transported via CalStar after Saturday morning crash in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 32-year-old man was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno early Saturday morning after his vehicle crashed into a tree near the intersection of San Jose Avenue and Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Prescribed burn operations at Sugar Pine, Glenbrook and Zephyr Cove

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) and California State Parks will conduct understory burns at Lake Tahoe in the coming days.

TDFPD is planning on burning in Glenbrook on May 12 and in Zephyr Cove on May 20, 2020. State Paks is planning on burning at Sugar Pine Point State Park on the West Shore on May 11 and May 18. Both are weather permitting and smoke be visible.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once again there were no additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County. There were no additional recoveries. Out of the 54 confirmed cases there are nine active cases.

165 additional tests were administered, bringing the total administered to 2,935.

Local boaters to be first allowed on Lake Tahoe; Future phases to allow out-of-area boats

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - Local boats will soon be able to get into Lake Tahoe, but boaters from out of the area will have to wait until COVID-19 reopening phases allow them.

On Friday the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) announced a phased approach to boating that discourages out-of-area visitation as part of state and local coordination on recreation guidelines for Lake Tahoe this season.

Portion of Tahoe East Shore Trail closed to stop visitation surges

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - A portion of the popular East Shore Trail will be closed starting May 8. Nevada State Parks has closed access to Sand Harbor via the Tahoe East Shore Trail temporarily due to expected visitation surges. Most of the trail will remain open.

Popular Sand Harbor has remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic and will remain open from 8:00 a.m. to one hour past dusk. The cost per car is $10.

Governor outlines guidelines for reopening Nevada with phase one Saturday

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak has unveiled his plan for the state to reopen under phase one starting May 9, 2020. Outdoor malls, restaurants, hair salons, and barber shops are among those able to reopen with new standards for safety.

"We must stay safe so we can stay open," said Sisolak of the ability to move into phase 2 by the end of May, or sooner.

"The beginning of the reopening of our economy is not the end of the coronavirus," said Sisolak during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "It's still with us, as strong as ever. It will not go away until there's a vaccine."

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There has been one new reported case of COVID-19 in El Dorado County since Tuesday, this time in the Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue area. The person is a female between the ages of 50-64.

Residents have been given an additional 178 tests, including those administered and the two new stations in Shingle Springs and South Lake Tahoe. There are currently nine active cases with no new recoveries.

Registration open for South Lake Tahoe kindergarten and pre-kindergarten

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though schools are not currently open, registration is underway for kindergarten and Transitional kindergarten in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD).

To be eligible for kindergarten enrollment a child must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2020. If the child will be five years of age between September 1, 2020, and December 2, 2020, they qualify for Transitional Kindergarten (TK); a two-year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

Four-week acting online workshop starts in May in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A four-week on-line acting workshop will be starting on May 11, 2020. Take 2 Performers Studio and Tahoe Production House have teamed up to bring this workshop to youth with a focus on television and film acting.

This is an interactive class where students will develop a solid foundation and acting techniques including improv, auditioning skills for film and television, and on-camera experience with instructors Justine Reyes and Holly Lorge.

Two arrested after pursuit in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - For the second time in as many days, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was involved in a vehicle pursuit.

On May 2, 2020, at 3:10 p.m. DCSO patrol deputies attempted to stop a motor vehicle with fictitious license plates in the area of Waterloo Lane and Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Three new cases of COVID-19 reported in El Dorado County; One in Douglas, 48 in Washoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since yesterday, the El Dorado County Public Health Department has reported three new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county told to 47.

Health officials say just one of those cases in actually new, and the other two were listed in the Sacramento County figures. Their identification showed a P.O. Box in Sacramento, but they actually live in El Dorado Hills. Both have since recovered.

USFS beaches and sites around Lake Tahoe to remain closed through May 15

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A temporary closure order for USFS beaches and recreation sites around Lake Tahoe has been extended through at least May 15, 2020. The original order was set to expire May 1. To keep in alignment with current federal, state, and local guidance for social distancing, and to ensure the health and safety of its employees, visitors, and volunteers, it was extended.

Trailheads and trails outside of the orange areas of the attached maps, or the ones on the closure website, are not affected by this order but parking lots are closed.

Winning ticket pulled for Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Hawaii drawing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF) recently wrapped up their 2020 Hawaii Condo raffle and the winner is Jordan Richie of South Lake Tahoe.

Richie, an athletic trainer at Barton Performance Center and the Head Athletic Trainer at South Tahoe High School, had his ticket pulled by Brooklyn Pakes.

The annual raffle pulled in $8,000 for LTEF to use for their annual grants. LTEF typically allocates between $50,000 and $75,000 for educational projects in Lake Tahoe Unified School District where local students benefit from every dollar donated.

Barton Health receives seventh "A" in patient safety from watchdog group

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Memorial Hospital received news of another ‘A’ grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group. Assessment data from 28 quality measurements demonstrated better patient outcomes at the Lake Tahoe hospital; the result of collaborative, team-driven systems in place at Barton Health that protect patients from harm.

Douglas County commissioners and residents deliver letter to Sisolak asking for phased reopening

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting on April 29, 2020, regarding recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impacts to local businesses in the county. The Board decided unanimously to deliver a letter to Governor Sisolak in support of reopening Douglas County and hand-delivered the letter in unison with community members and the Sheriff's Office at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Dispute at Lake Tahoe construction site; One transported via Cal Star, other by ambulance

5.1.20 UPDATE: In the morning hours of April 30, 2020, a group of construction workers were involved in a physical altercation at their job site at the new Tahoe Beach Club at the end of Kahle Drive. During the physical fight, a knife was produced and one male sustained major knife inflicted injuries to his head/face and he was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno via Cal Star.

Another male suffered minor non-life threatening injuries and he was transported to Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

There were no new cases on Wednesday, with 44 total positive tests in the county. There were 50 more tests for the virus Wednesday, with 2,050 total tests issued with 2,006 negative or pending results.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - One person in El Dorado County has tested positive for COVID-19 since Monday. The new case is a male from South County aged 50-64, bringing the total testing positive in the county to 44. He was the first South County resident to test positive.

The County tested 60 more people Tuesday, bringing the total of residents being tested to 2000.

One more person has recovered and there are five active cases.

Decision expected in May on status of major Lake Tahoe events

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - With formal events being canceled due to COVID-19 health concerns, there are two major summer events in Lake Tahoe that are still officially on the calendar. The holding of the American Century Championship (Celebrity Golf) and 4th of July Fireworks for this summer is expected to be determined mid-May.

Incline Village/Crystal Bay leaders announced their fireworks were going to be canceled earlier this month, but the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority (TDVA) board will be voting at their May meeting on the 2020 South Shore display.

El Dorado County lifts orders but California stay-at-home orders still in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One layer of stay-at-home orders has been lifted for El Dorado County as its Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams, has lifted her stay-at-home directive effective April 30, the original date it was to be lifted when set on March 19.

This doesn't mean that South Lake Tahoe and the county are open for business though as the State's order is still in effect.

"We are requesting from the Governor that we [South Lake Tahoe] can move towards reopening in a phased approach with attention paid to his six guidelines," said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Jason Collin.

South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda: Short-term economic recovery update and budget workshop

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council will hold a budget workshop and har from their short-term economic recovery task force during their meeting on Tuesday, April 27 starting at 9:00 a.m.

The task force made up of two councilmembers and local leaders have identified the need for the following financial assistance in order to facilitate the immediate needs of our residents and businesses and to facilitate the re-opening of the city when that time comes.

Douglas County holding special meeting to discuss recovery and economic impacts

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will be conducting a 1:00 p.m. special meeting on April 29, 2020, to discuss recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impacts to local businesses in Douglas County. The county is actively seeking public comment from residents in regard to economic impacts on local business in Douglas County.

South Lake Tahoe coach facing federal child pornography charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A search warrant served at a South Lake Tahoe home on April 15, 2020, has resulted in the arrest of a local 39-year-old snowboard and soccer coach on alleged child pornography charges.

Timothy Daniel Mackey was arrested without incident by the FBI and U.S. Marshals at his home during the search.

Vail Resorts announces 20-80% credit to pass holders for next ski season

With a ski and snowboard season cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, Vail Resorts announced Monday morning a plan to address the many concerns of pass holders. They will be providing 2019/20 season pass holders with credits of 20 percent to 80 percent, depending on how often they were able to use that pass during the season.
