Lodi woman identified in Zephyr Cove fatal crash

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a Lodi, Calif., woman as the victim of a two-vehicle fatal crash that happened Sunday on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe.

Reyna Vizcaara, 24, died at the scene of the crash, reported at 2:55 p.m., said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen. Four others were injured and taken to area hospitals, including three Carson City residents. Two remain hospitalized.

Strong thunderstorm develops over Lake Tahoe

A strong thunderstorm has moved into the Lake Tahoe area Sunday afternoon producing thunder and lightning strikes, according to a weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Reno.

Boaters and swimmer on or near Lake Tahoe should get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle, the weather service urges.

The storm was moving northward and could cause dangerous cloud to ground lightning and winds of 40 mph. The affected areas are South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove and Glenbrook.

UC Davis researcher Charles Goldman to discuss Lake Tahoe, climate change

Lake Tahoe, climate change and how global warming affects the lake will be the subject of a discussion by renowned limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman Friday, 6 p.m. June 7 at the Sierra Nevada College campus in Incline Village.

UC Davis research at Lake Tahoe began with Dr. Goldman. In 1959, he formed the Tahoe Research Group and began regularly monitoring Lake Tahoe. Goldman successfully combined effective research and social action with his pioneering studies of lake eutrophication (the dense growth of algae and other organisms).

Pilot, two passengers escape injury after plane crashes near Spooner; FAA team arrives at crash site

A pilot and two passengers escaped injury Wednesday after a plane crash northeast of Spooner in the Kings Canyon area, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed.

The passengers of the aircraft were taken by Carson City Fire and Rescue to the staging area at the Kings Canyon Trailhead where they signed statements with the Carson City Sheriff's Office. Both declined comment. An official at the scene said the three had taken a flight to celebrate the birthday of a 23-year-old female passenger and that both passengers were shaken and didn't wish to speak. It is believed but not confirmed the flight originated from Lake Tahoe.

There was a story in this week's USA Today that caught my interest and made me research facts here in Lake Tahoe. The article said that the number of signed contracts to buy homes in the U.S. rose in March to the highest level in 3 years.

South Lake Tahoe pot club owner sentenced to five years in federal prison; agrees to forfeit drug money

Former City of Angels 2 pot club owner Gennaro "Gino" DiMatteo of South Lake Tahoe was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller.

DiMatteo had pled guilty to a felony for marijuana trafficking on Jan. 9. As part of his plea agreement, DiMatteo agreed to forfeit more than $40,000 to the United States.

Forest Service aims for 10-acre prescribed fire at South Shore

If weather conditions hold, about 10 acres will be burned in a prescribed fire today near Mewuk Drive in the South Lake Tahoe area, the U.S. Forest Service reports. Five acres are up for burning across the South Shore near Tahoe City.

Rain and high elevation snow are expected today along with breezy conditions. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. Thursday. Winds will be out of the southwest, 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph this morning and then increasing this afternoon with gusts to 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Prescribed fire operations continue on South and East shores of Lake Tahoe

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews continue prescribed fire operations near Spooner Summit beginning Monday. Crews expect to burn approximately 40 acres. In addition, operations begin Monday on Tahoe Mountain near Dundee Circle. Crews expect to burn approximately six acres. Operations in both locations may continue through the week, weather and conditions permitting.

With up to 26 inches of snow falling earlier this week around Lake Tahoe area ski resorts, officials at Heavenly Mountain Resort report solid conditions for March ski and boarding.

"With the US Freestyle National Championships March 29-31, and Shaun White’s High Roller Hold ‘Em April 6, followed by the Gunbarrel 25 on April 7, it’s going to be an amazing spring," said Heavenly spokesman Russ Pecoraro.

Placerville man pleads guilty to interstate marijuana trafficking

A 26-year-old Placerville man pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring to manufacture, distribute, and possess with intent to distribute marijuana, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner said.

Dylan Hudson was in charge of an interstate marijuana-trafficking conspiracy, according to court documents. More than 1,100 pounds of processed marijuana, more than $329,000 in cash, and eight firearms were seized during the course of the investigation.

Camp Richardson campground, road plan proposal up for public comment

A 30-day public comment period began Thursday on plans associated with upgrades at the Camp Richardson Resort campground along Highway 89 near South Lake Tahoe.
Plans include upgrades and enhancements to the campground day use facilities as well as BMPs and road improvements to ease traffic congestion around the campground and along Highway 89 at the popular Lake Tahoe resort.

Snow and cold weather on the way for Lake Tahoe by Thursday

A strong cold front will impact Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Thursday bringing colder temperatures and some light snow by late afternoon into the evening, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Southwest winds on Thursday ahead of the front will pick up, with gusts up to 40 mph, and Sierra ridges gusting over 60 mph. Bands of snow are forecast to develop behind the cold front Thursday afternoon and evening, with residual showers through Friday.

Missing snowboarder found alive, stayed overnight at Horizon

A search for missing snowboarder Corey Hoffman ended this morning when the Douglas County Sheriff's Office was contacted by a family member who informed them that Hoffman had phoned his father and advised he had spent the night at Horizon Casino Resort.

Deputies contacted Corey at the Stagecoach Lodge where he had proceeded to, and according to him he was unaware of the search for him. After a lengthy interview with Corey and his brother who had reported him missing, we are unable to determine exactly what transpired.
