Four new officers sworn in for South Lake Tahoe Police Department

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two South Tahoe High graduates are among the four newly sworn in officers for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Jason Fritz and Grant Fagen were sworn in at City Hall on Friday, Jason Nixon was sworn in on Thursday as he graduated from the Sacramento Police Academy and John Miller started work in October.

South Lake Tahoe girl helps ease pain of young Camp Fire victims

Donations have been transported by the car and truck load from South Lake Tahoe to Paradise, full of help for the victims of the Camp Fire which, to date, has destroyed 9,700 homes, businesses and other structures and burned 149,500 acres.

One of those loads was delivered by 13-year-old Jaymee Levin.

Douglas County Sheriff's deputies graduate from state academy

Two deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office were honored by Sheriff Ron Pierini today for their recent graduation from the State of Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Law Enforcement Academy.

Deputies Maciej Stebel and Spencer McLaughlin graduated November 15, 2018 after attending the academy for the past four months.

Public invited to hockey games in South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy Varsity team has been competing across the country and they bring the action back to their home ice on Saturday at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Coming off a 7-0 win over Los Gatos at the Solar4Amerian Ice in San Jose on Tuesday, the Tahoe team hosts St. Mary's Preparatory High School Rams on Saturday, November 10 at 1:00 p.m. This game is part of the team's competition in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League.

SLTPD opens police officer positions: Get paid to attend police academy

With an officer shortage in South Lake Tahoe, the police department is seeking applications for the position of "Police Officer Untrained/Trainee."

The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for officers to fill a void created with the departure of four trained officers to other jurisdictions. If hired, candidates will get paid to attend the police academy and start with an annual salary of $63,505.52.

Firefest returns to South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds pinning and promotion ceremony

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue welcomed four new firefighter paramedics to their family during a pinning ceremony at the airport Thursday. They also celebrated the promotion of Kevin Van Kirk to Engineer and honored retired Batalion Chief Tim Spencer.

"Fire service is really about family," said Chief Jeff Meston and he opened the ceremony. "This is a special day for South Lake Tahoe."

He explained how tough it is to get a new firefighter on board. There are tests, boards and interviews.

Eighteen graduate during 12th annual Lake Tahoe Fire Academy ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "This is a really special group," Brad Deeds, Dean of Workforce Development and Instruction at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC), told those attending Saturday's graduation of the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy (LTBFA) class of 2018.

For the past ten months, the 18 graduating men and women have been put through the tough physical, emotional, operational and educational requirements of becoming a firefighter.

Each speaker echoed Deeds' sentiments.

Children's summer food program starts Wednesday in South Lake Tahoe

The 2018 Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will once again serve the children in the community with food beginning June 20, thanks to generous donations from the community and Vail Resorts. Food will be available at three South Lake Tahoe locations every Wednesday through August 22.

Club soccer tryouts for South Lake Tahoe area youth

Tryouts for the next club soccer season will be held June 20-21 at locations in South Lake Tahoe. South Tnahoe Futbol Club has one open tryout per year for the entire 2018/19 seaso, due to the policy from the Nevada Youth Soccer Association, and now is that time.

Grammy award winning music superstar Janet Jackson has been added to the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena lineup.

An Evening With Janet Jackson on Friday, August 10 will be part of her State of the World Tour. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $69.50 to $149.50.

“Jackson managed to expertly pull off an all-stops stadium pop show while still imbuing the affair with plenty of her own idiosyncratic personality,” said Variety on Jackson's new tour, and USA Today added, “Yep, the iconic choreography still holds up.”

Graduation for 13 new members of Douglas County Search and Rescue

New members were added to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team this week after completing a 48-hour academy where they were certified as a Nevada Wilderness Search and Rescue Technician (NWSRT), a nationally recognized credential.

The graduation for the 13 community members was held on April 17, 2018 in Minden, Nev.

Two classic movies focus of talks at Western Nevada College

Fifty years have elapsed since the release of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which creatively tried to make sense of the past and speculated about the future.

Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas will review that 1968 blockbuster film and its impact on a generation during his presentation on Saturday, April 14 at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City. Thomas will also provide a lecture on “Old West Lawmen” on Friday, April 13 at the observatory.

SLTFR Captain Leslie Asbury honored

Captain Leslie Asbury of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was honored during Tuesday's City Council meeting after graduating from the United States Fire Administration National Fire Academy Managing Officer Program. It was a two-year commitment for Asbury.

"We are very fortunate to have a committed and dedicated fire officer within our organization," said SLTFR Chief Jeff Meston. "We are honored to work with her."

Dr. Keith Swanson named the 2018 Barton Doctor of the Year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The votes have been counted and Dr. Keith Swanson has been named Barton Health’s Doctor of the Year. Each year, hundreds of Barton team members cast their vote to nominate a favorite physician in honor of National Doctor’s Day, and the 2018 winner was announced at Barton’s Doctor’s Day Celebration on March 29.

“We honor Dr. Swanson as our Doctor of the Year, and the incredible contributions he’s made to the community as an orthopedic surgeon and practitioner of nearly 40 years,” said Dr. Clint Purvance, CEO at Barton Health.

Healthy tips during National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, a time to return to the basics of healthful eating. The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) invites all community members to make March their healthiest month yet.

“Whether you’re starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before a workout, the foods you choose can make a real difference,” said Theresa Fagouri, Health Education Coordinator for HHSA’s SNAP-Ed Nutrition Program.

Daylight saving time begins Sunday, time to spring forward!

One sure sign of spring is the annual changing of the clock as Daylight Saving Time begins. On Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2:00 a.m., most states will move their clocks forward one hour, the 100th anniversary of the Spring time change.

The state of Florida just voted to keep Daylight Saving Time year round, and Arizona and Hawaii don't move clocks forward at all.

CNN researchers came up with the following timeline for the clock change:

1784 - The idea of daylight saving is first conceived by Benjamin Franklin.

1914-1918 - Britain goes on DLS during World War I.

Sierra House Elementary holds Olympic Games ceremony

Sierra House Elementary School celebrated the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games on Friday morning with lots of excitement. They had the torch, the cheering fans, the Olympic flag and the national anthem.

A torch relay started at 9:15 a.m. with torch bearing students running their portion of the relay before passing it on to the next runner. The relay circled the school a few times, with each passing of a runner drawing cheers from the crowd of students, parents and faculty.

Captain Bryce Cranch has been promoted to the position of Battalion Chief, filling the vacancy left by retiring chief Rich Nalder.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds annual awards ceremony

An overflowing crowd of family, friends and community members filled the City Council chambers Monday as South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue held their 5th annual awards ceremony.

The staff was honored for their service doing a job that protects the lives, homes and environment of the South Lake Tahoe community and its visitors.

"Your recognition is well deserved, and well earned," said Mayor Wendy David.

Douglas County Search and Rescue recruiting new volunteers

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (DCSAR) is looking for physically fit and energetic individuals to participate in its upcoming April academy and join their team.

DCSAR is a highly qualified and respected team comprised of approximately 50 trained volunteer members within the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are frequently called out to assist surrounding counties in their rescues, it requires a considerable commitment, but is tremendously rewarding when a life is saved.

Captain Joe Duffy of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has announced his candidacy for Sheriff of Douglas County, a job currently held by Sheriff Ron Pierini who has announced he will retire after being in the position since 1997.

The night starts out with music from former fireman Kevin Marcy. Feel like you can firefight better than the pros? This will be your chance to compete against the pros in a water bucket brigade.

There will also be a raffle.

LTCC awarded $500k for culinary pre-apprenticeship program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is one of just a handful of educational providers in the state to win a $500,000 grant from the California Apprenticeship Initiative (CAI) to help build and launch culinary pre-apprenticeship programs in South Lake Tahoe. LTCC was recently notified of the award, which will be used to help better prepare South Lake Tahoe’s workforce and to improve local residents’ ability to secure in-demand jobs and progress to higher-wage careers in the Tahoe Basin.

SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston wins award

Chief Jeff Meston of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is the recipient of the Ed Bent Training Excellence Award in recognition of being the Outstanding Fire Instructor of the Year at the California Training Officers Symposium held this week in Fresno, California.

The award was created many years ago on behalf of Ed Bent for his contribution as a founding father of statewide training and curriculum for the California Fire Service.

Dr. Jeffrey Orr returns to South Lake Tahoe as Barton's newest surgeon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Health announced today that Jeffrey Orr, MD, has returned to his hometown of South Lake Tahoe to join its network of talented orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Orr received his medical doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He conducted his orthopedic surgery residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He completed his fellowship training at the University of South Florida. He’s an affiliate of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Douglas County Sheriff offers law enforcement classes for seniors

The next Douglas County Sheriff's Senior Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy will be held September 11-15, 2017.

Registration is now being accepted for those interested in attending the academy and learning about law enforcement. Students must be at least 50 years of age and residents of Douglas County.

TEDx South Lake Tahoe speaker lineup announced

The TEDx license only allowed 100 attendees at The Loft during its first year, but after a trip the New York and a TEDx main event, local organizers were able to qualify South Lake Tahoe for a larger audience in 2017.

New deputy sworn in for Douglas County Sheriff's Office

MINDEN, Nevada – Spencer McLaughlin has been sworn in as a new deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Surrounded by family and friends, McLaughlin joined the department and started a new career in civilian law enforcement. Deputy McLaughlin was a military police officer for five years, spending most of his time on the base SWAT team in Japan and at Camp Pendleton near Oceanside, California.

Pete Sonntag leaving Lake Tahoe to head up Whistler Blackcomb

Pete Sonntag, the current senior vice president of Vail Resort's Lake Tahoe region, is leaving the lake to be the new chief operating officer of Vail's Whistler Blackcomb.

He will start this summer once his Canadian work visa is approved.

The appointment follows the announcement last month that longtime Whistler Blackcomb chief operating officer, Dave Brownlie, was stepping down to pursue other endeavors after a nearly 30-year career at the resort.

Justin Timberlake returns to Tahoe to play in American Century Championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Justin Timberlake is returning to Lake Tahoe for his third consecutive year playing in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. The singer/actor was an instant crowd favorite in his first year, and continued to be fan favorite in 2016.

Timberlake, an avid golfer, has a 4-handicap. Besides singing, acting, being a husband and father, he is also known for his philanthropic endeavors.

DCSO Deputy Duffy selected as Grand Marshall for Carson Valley Days parade

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Teresa Duffy will lead the 107th annual Carson Valley Days parade as the Grand Marshall. The theme of the parade and festival is "A Salute to First Responders."

The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club is organizing the event which runs from June 9 to June 11. The club wanted to raise awareness, celebrate, honor and, most importantly, say thank you to the first responders of Douglas County, those who protect the community on a daily basis.

Carson Valley Starbucks facility to expand, 100 jobs being added

Starbucks operations in Nevada’s Carson Valley plans to grow substantially over the next year with the addition of 700,000 square feet to the distribution portion of the Starbucks Carson Valley Roasting Plant and Distribution Center in Minden, Nev. The expansion will bring nearly 100 new jobs to the location in the first year after completion, bringing the distribution workforce to nearly 350.

Artist Erin Whitman to visit LTCC; Holding hands-on demonstration and lecture

The school's Art Department welcomes the visiting artist for two days of events, including lecture about her work and artistic inspirations on Thursday, June 8 at 6 p.m. in LTCC’s Board Room. Whitman is also hosting a hands-on demonstration of her work on Friday, June 9 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room F101, located in the Fine Arts building. These events, sponsored by the LTCC Foundation and the LTCC Art Club, are free and open to the public.

LTCC hires Russi Egan as new VP of Administrative Services

During a special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday, Russi Egan was hired as the college's new Vice President of Administrative Services.

Egan is currently the Vice President of Administrative Services and Chief Financial Officer at Palo Verde College in Blythe, Calif. She will begin her new job at LTCC on July 1.

The position has been vacant since Jeff DeFranco became the school's new Superintendent/President in January, 2017.

Sugar Pine Foundation gets musician Jack Johnson's help this summer

As of 2016, the Sugar Pine Foundation has spearheaded the plating of over 94,000 sugar pine seedlings within 1,696 acres while involving over 6,600 volunteers, and the 2017 season is here.
