We survived the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and resorts that remain open this week and for the season continue to make snow and spin lifts. Kirkwood has scheduled Chair #6 – Cornice Express to offer top to bottom skiing & riding. Mammoth Mtn. & Mt Rose also open top to bottom. More snow predicted to come through with a Winter Storm Watch starting Wednesday.

Ten years of fighting aquatic invasive species at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - This year marks the tenth anniversary of Lake Tahoe’s Watercraft Inspection Program. Under the program, every motorized watercraft is inspected to ensure it is clean, drained, and dry and not carrying aquatic invasive species before launching at Tahoe. Thanks to diligent boaters and watercraft inspectors, no new aquatic invasive species have been detected in Lake Tahoe since the program began 10 years ago.

Ron Cohen named CEO/President of Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Alterra Mountain Company announced today that Ron Cohen has been selected as President and Chief Operating Officer of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. Cohen has served as the interim President & Chief Operating Officer at the resort since April, 2018, and will move into the permanent position effective immediately.

Lake Tahoe area boat inspection stations opening for 2018 season

The successful Lake Tahoe roadside boat inspection stations are reopening for the 2018 boating season. The fight against aquatic invasive species (AIS) has gone on for the last ten years, and officials say a large part of their success in keeping the lake clear are the stations located around the lake.

Since 2018, Tahoe Resource Conservation District (RCD) inspectors have performed over 70,000 vessel inspections, decontaminated 32,576 of them using hot water, and have found hundreds of vessels containing foreign species such as mussels, snails and plant material.

Andy Wirth announces his retirement from Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows

Following eight years at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, Andy Wirth has announced plans to retire and step down from the position of President & COO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings.

22 disabled veterans heading to Lake Tahoe for special week at Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows

Twenty-two injured veterans will arrive at the Reno-Tahoe airport Sunday evening and head to Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows for 3rd annual Military to the Mountains program through March 17, 2018.

Eight of the veterans are residents of the Reno/Sparks area and will join the arrival celebration at 7:45 p.m. at the airport near the ski statue.

The week long adaptive ski week is sponsored by High Fives Foundation, Adaptive Training Foundation, City of Reno, Achieve Tahoe and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

How the Olympics in Lake Tahoe changed the games forever

As the 2018 Olympics come to a close, taking a look back to the 1960 event at Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe puts a lot into perspective. Perhaps those Olympics should have been called "Against All Odds."

Truckee rock climber falls to his death overnight

A Truckee man died after falling more than 100 feet down a cliff Wednesday night, Placer County sheriff's officials said.

The Placer Search and Rescue and Nordic teams responded when they received a call of a fallen hiker at 10:00 p.m. near Squaw Valley.

The unidentified man was with two friends in the area of Big Chief, just east of Highway 89 and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. The men, in their 20s and 30s, did some rock climbing during daylight hours and then went to hike to the top of Big Chief after dark with their headlamps on.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows have 100% renewable energy goal in 2018

To help achieve Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows’ goal to be powered by 100 percent clean, renewable energy sources, Liberty Utilities, the electric service provider in the Lake Tahoe region of California, is actively collaborating with resort leadership to identify and develop new renewable energy generation, storage and energy efficiency projects to benefit the Olympic Valley and surrounding areas. Subject to regulatory approval, the two companies intend to achieve the resort’s 100 percent renewable goal as early as December 2018.

Plans to ease North Lake Tahoe traffic during ski season

The snow is falling, and the ski season is about to hit high gear heading toward the big Presidents Day weekend. Will Tahoe roads be ready to handle the traffic?

Probably not. The surge of traffic on Friday nights and Saturday mornings is intense, notably on Highway 89, the only route to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski areas. Highway 89 was a parking lot at times last year, as were some Truckee streets.

New ski pass to give users access to 23 resorts in 9 states, 2 countries

The Alterra Mountain Company has announced the a new pass for the 2018-19 season, the Ikon Pass. It will give pass holders access to many of North America’s top mountain destinations, uniting 12 destinations from Alterra Mountain Company with 11 premier partners.

Layer of snow covers South Lake Tahoe

"Pray for Snow" dances worked as snow is covering the mountains around Lake Tahoe. Snow showers are tapering off this morning, but now before the weather system dropped 1-2" of snow at lake level and 7-11" at the ski resorts.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows official training site for U.S. Ski & Snowboard team

Five ski resorts in the United States are official training sites for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard team, and now for the next five years Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is one of them. They join Mammoth Mountain in California, Deer Valley in Utah, Copper Mountain in Colorado and Timberline Lodge in Oregon. In addition to being an Official Training Site for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is a U.S. Ski & Snowboard High Performance Center and U.S. Ski & Snowboard Development Site.

Sierra-at-Tahoe opens for the season Saturday, Northstar opened today

Sierra-at-Tahoe is the latest Lake Tahoe area ski resort to open for the 2017/18 winter season. The slopes open on December 2, 2017 with limited terrain.

Grandview Express and Easy Rider Express will give skiers and riders access to 11 trails and two terrain parks. Early season conditions are present throughout the mountain and guests are asked to obey all signs and closures.

Kirkwood opens for season

Kirkwood Mountain Resort kicked off their 2017-2018 ski season Friday. They have opened four of their 15 lifts (1,5,6,11), giving access to 250 acres of skiing on 15 percent of their terrain.

Operating hours at this time are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Heavenly is open in South Lake Tahoe, with Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Mt. Rose open on the North Shore. Northstar was originally planning on opening Friday but instead will announce their opening day on November 27.

Wind, rain and snow in South Lake Tahoe, snow at upper elevations

The South Shore has been getting just rain, and lots of it since the recent storm reached the Sierra Wednesday. Heavenly Mountain Resort received 11" of snow overnight, just ahead of their Friday opening day. Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows each received 14" from this storm, and 7" at Kirkwood.

Snow is expected at both lake level and at the resorts tonight before the system passes through.

Heavenly opens for the season on Friday

Heavenly Mountain Resort will open for the 2017-2018 season on Friday, Nov. 17, just as a winter storm passes by Lake Tahoe.

“We’re thrilled to begin the ski season at Heavenly this Friday,” said Mike Goar, senior vice president of mountain division and chief operating officer of Heavenly Mountain Resort. “We’ve been hard at work making snow at every opportunity, and current forecasts are calling for snow. We’re excited to begin another terrific ski season.”

North Lake Tahoe students get indoor snowboarding lesson from Olympian

LAKE TAHOE - In an ongoing effort to make snowboarding accessible to every kid, Burton Learn to Ride, Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows hosted local kids Wednesday, November 8 for an hour of indoor snowboarding with video instruction from Olympic halfpipe snowboarding champion Kelly Clark, Burton’s Jeff Boliba and instructors from Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Plates for Powder campaign returns

LAKE TAHOE – Ski season is almost here, and with it returns the popular “Plates for Powder” program. Individuals who purchase a new Lake Tahoe license plate in either California or Nevada can receive free lift tickets to one of eight Lake Tahoe resorts participating in the program. With snow heading to the mountains soon, now is the time to buy a Tahoe license plate so you can ski for free in Tahoe.

Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows plans base-to-base gondola to open by 2019

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows formally announced its plan to install a base-to-base gondola connecting The Village at Squaw Valley and the base area at Alpine Meadows today. The freshly branded “California Express” gondola is targeted to open ahead of the 2019-20 winter season. The connection of these two mountains will realize the long-held dream of the pioneers who brought the sport of skiing and the 1960 Winter Olympics to Squaw Valley nearly 60 years ago.

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason stops by Lake Tahoe on world tour

For over 50 years, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dave Mason has been entertaining crowds, from his days as a founding member of Traffic, to his current days touring the world with his band.

He'll be on the South Shore Sunday night as he stops by Harrah's Tahoe as part of his "Alone Together" tour.

Mason took time this week to talk to South Tahoe Now as he traveled from Oregon to Washington, both stops on his tour before heading to South Lake Tahoe.

National Brotherhood of Skiers to hold next summit at Squaw Valley

The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) has selected Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows to host its next NBS Black Summit. The Summit serves as both the organization’s annual gathering of members and largest fundraiser. More than 800 NBS members and 300 guests from throughout the US and beyond are expected to attend the annual event. The week-long event will run March 3-10, 2018.

Squaw Valley resurrects plans to add year-round coaster

Squaw Valley has applied for a permit to install Lake Tahoe's second gravity-powered coaster, the Timberline Twister.

In March, 2013, Squaw Valley scrapped plans for the coaster "due to business considerations and capital priorities," a.ccording to a letter sent to Placer County at the time

Now plans are back on for the ride that will expand on-mountain experiences for families. It will be located at the bottom of the mountain between the Far East and Red Dog chairlifts, an area already zoned for this type of recreational use.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Mammoth now part of new company

Twelve four-season resorts with 20,000 skiable acres are all now part of a new company that was formed to acquire Intrawest Resort Holdings, Inc. and Mammoth Resorts.
