Good Morning Lake Tahoe Skiers & Riders…

6-12” of Fresh Snow reported at resorts and Lifts will operate on delayed openings and Wind & Weather Permitting… Heavenly, Kirkwood, Northstar, Squaw, Alpine, Mt Rose, Boreal & Mammoth are scheduled to open weather permitting… Sierra at Tahoe & Sugar Bowl scheduled to open Friday. Chain Controls posted on all highways morning… Buckle Up! Winter Storm Warning posted thru Friday morning and Winter Storm Watch, Friday evening thru Saturday.

Today’s Weather: Expect Snow & Rain. Snow accumulation of 3-9” with 11-17” above 7000 feet. Highs: 33F-38F (23F-38F @ 8000 feet) South winds 10-15 mph. Ridge gusts up to 75 mph decreasing to 60 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Snow Showers. Snow accumulation of 1 to 3” with 2 to 6” above 7000 feet. Lows 21 to 31. South winds 10 to 15 mph.

WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING…

* CHANGES…increased snowfall totals at lake level.

* WHAT…Moderate to heavy snow, especially through mid-morning and again this afternoon and evening. Total snow accumulations 1 – 2 feet above 7000 feet, with localized higher amounts at the Sierra Crest. At Lake Tahoe level, 5 – 10 inches are expected with up to 15 inches west of Highway 89. Wind gusts in excess of 70 mph are expected over exposed higher terrain. Heavy snow possible again Friday night. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, except 12 to 18 inches near the crest are possible.

* WHERE…Greater Lake Tahoe Area.

* WHEN…For the Winter Storm Warning, until 4 AM PST Friday. For the Winter Storm Watch, from Friday evening through Saturday evening.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commutes. Heavy, wet snow Friday morning could increase chances for tree damage.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Avoid travel if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.

WHAT TO WEAR: Dress warm, in layers with your Gore-Tex Jacket or Shell. Take warm gloves, a hat or beanie, and wear a Helmet for Safety. Also wear good yellow or rose tinted Goggles. Don’t forget to Stay Hydrated at Altitude!

SURFACE CONDITIONS: Surface Conditions are Fresh Powder/Snow over Machine Groomed. Machine Groomed & Skier-Rider Packed Powder/Snow. Watch for marked & unmarked obstacles.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Stay on designated Opened Trails only. Keep an eye out for marked and unmarked obstacles. Slow Down and observe safety signs on trails with high concentration of skiers and riders… Know the Code! Always stay in control. Be able to avoid objects and people in your Path! Please stop to side of the run where it is safe and always check uphill for skiers and riders before restarting downhill.

High Avalanche Danger will exist today as heavy snowfall with gale force winds impact our forecast region. Wind slab and storm slab avalanche problems will become very likely today in near treeline and above treeline terrain where previous snow cover existed. Considerable Avalanche danger will exist in below treeline terrain at lower elevations with minimal previous snow cover. Dangerous avalanche conditions will exist today, travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.
