New Valhalla Tahoe "Evening on the Lawn" concerts this summer

The grand lawn at Valhalla has been a popular spot for Sunday afternoon concerts and now there will be two evening lawn concerts in 2017. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic supper and enjoy some music, there will be a beer and wine garden too.

Shakespeare for the younger set: Will's Kids, returns to South Lake Tahoe

Summer is not all beach and playtime for Lake Tahoe area kids, its also time to hang out with Shakespeare. For the second consecutive year, Will's Kids will take place at Valhalla inside Tallac Historic Site on Friday, August 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Will’s Kids is a collaboration between Live Violence Free, Tahoe Youth and Family Services, Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, the D.G. Manchetti Young Shakespeare Program, and Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival to bring art to the children of the community.

$100 million later, Edgewood Lodge opens to the public

They broke ground on the new Edgewood Lodge at the south shore of Lake Tahoe in October of 2015, but plans and environmental improvements began years before that in preparation for the new 169,000 square-foot hotel and spa with dining, shopping and adventures options along with 154 rooms.

Live at Lakeview returns for sixth season in South Lake Tahoe

Summer is almost here and its time to start planning your Thursday evenings in South Lake Tahoe with a stop at Live at Lakeview, the summer concert series on the beach.

Starting June 22 and every Thursday until August 31, the free concerts will be at Lakeview Commons at the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Highway 50 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Reception for new South LakeTahoe art gallery at City Hall

The City and Tahoe Arts Alliance (TAA) have teamed up on the project which will bring work of local artists to the walls at the entrance of City Hall at the airport. Their art will be rotated throughout the year and all art will be available for purchase.

STHS photographers tops in state-wide contests

South Tahoe High School students were honored for their award winning photography during Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District board meeting.

Guadalupe Ruiz and Tristan Klasko received recognition for their first-place award winning photographs submitted to the California Streaming Photo Contest sponsored by the California County Offices of Education. They each won a camera, tripod and other gifts. Their award winning photos will be used on a calendar distributed to teachers across the state.

Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble

Captivating audiences from coast to coast, Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble returns to present their 2017 Spring/Summer concert series, "Cam-pa-no-lo-gy,

Artist Erin Whitman to visit LTCC; Holding hands-on demonstration and lecture

Whitman is also hosting a hands-on demonstration of her work on Friday, June 9 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room F101, located in the Fine Arts building. Lake Tahoe Brewfest to raise funds for Boys and Girls Club

The inaugural Lake Tahoe Brewfest is coming to the South Shore on Saturday, June 10 from noon to 5:00 p.m., and will be the first major event to bring together all of the breweries from the Lake Tahoe area’s emerging beer scene.

LTCC student art exhibition kicked off with reception and awards ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The annual Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Student Art Exhibition will be kicked off with a reception on Sunday, May 21 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the school's Commons. The public is invited to the free reception and there will be live music and refreshments.

This month-long art show is always a hit. Approximately 400 works of student art will be on display from digital art and printmaking to sculpture, a culmination of students' creations over the past year.

Barton Foundation to award $40,000 in grants for Tahoe’s health and well-being

The Barton Foundation is giving $40,000 in grants to improve community health. Local non-profits, health organizations, schools, and public agencies are encouraged to apply for funding.

The Barton Health Grants provide funds for programs and organizations that positively impact the health of the South Tahoe community. In this grant cycle, projects and programs that address mental health, substance abuse, and access to healthcare services will be considered. These three issues were identified as the most pressing health needs in South Lake Tahoe’s 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment.

Sierra House Elementary raising funds for Charlie Cart Project

From the day they set foot in the kindergarten classroom, students at Sierra House Elementary school learn about soil, seeds, planting and growing food, and now parents at the school are raising money to take lessons for all K-5 students to the next level.

South Lake Tahoe teachers show support for free and quality education for all students

Members of the California Teacher's Association (CTA) and California Federation of Teachers (CFT) across the state brought out the posters and wore red on May 1 to advocate for public education and immigrant students.

South Lake Tahoe teachers joined in and greeted parents and students as they arrived for school Monday, displaying posters and letting students know they all had a right to quality and free public education, and asking all to take the pledge (as seen below).

Tahoe Art League hosts exhibit in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month

Join in on helping others during "Pay it Forward Week" in South Lake Tahoe

Most places take just one day to officially "Pay it Forward" but one person in the South Lake Tahoe community has made it his goal to cause a ripple effect of kindness through the community for a whole week.

International "Pay it Forward" day is on Friday, April 28 and more than 80 countries and 70 cities across America have made proclamations to join the global initiative and make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness across the world. Small acts of kindness, when multiplied by millions of people, can literally change the world for the better.

LTCC students heading to renown ceramics conference

Students in the Art Club at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) are gearing up for their annual participation in the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art (CCACA) conference in Davis from April 28-30. LTCC students are designing and installing a personalized exhibition that will be on display throughout the conference, joining 40 other regional schools with exhibitions installed at locations all around downtown Davis.

SLT Senior Center meeting with County rescheduled due to weather

The City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County elected officials are holding a meeting with local seniors to identify the future needs of the Senior Center on Thursday, April 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the center located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in the main meeting room.

This meeting was originally scheduled for Thursday, April 13 but has been postponed due to a forecast of inclement weather.

Modern Makers: Unique arts and crafts store opens in South Lake Tahoe

Another reason to "Stay and Play in South Lake Tahoe" just opened their doors in the Ski Run Center: Modern Makers.

This interactive arts and crafts store opened for business March 22 and offers a large variety of craft kits and supplies, with more being added weekly. Modern Makers' specialty is a craft area set up where projects can be done right in the store, whether its for a birthday party, a family project or as a solo artist. They have an extensive menu of crafts customers can work on, whether it's in the store, a motel room or at home.

Registration begins Wednesday for those seeking Burning Man tickets

Burning Man, the popular annual festival of self-expression in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, takes place over Labor Day weekend, August 27 – September 4, 2017. This "temporary metropolis" dedicated to art and community has become so poplar that buying the high-demand tickets is not only costly, but buying tickets is now a two-day event.

The theme this year is "Radical Ritual."

NDOT begins installing new "Welcome to Nevada” signs

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has begun installation of new “Welcome to Nevada” signs designed by Nevada art students.

The first welcome sign was installed Wednesday, March 15 at the Nevada-California border on State Route 88 south of Minden. Signs will be installed at approximately 25 other border locations statewide over the coming months.

Instead of the welcome signs, select border crossings such as State Route 28 in Crystal Bay and U.S. 395 near Bordertown will receive gateway monuments in the future.

Choices for Children and the City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Services hosted Day of the Young Child on Saturday March 11, 2017. Twenty-seven agencies came together to offer a wide variety of early childhood activities including art, sensory activities and physical activities. Children enjoyed face painting, beading, painting, play
dough, planting, rock climbing, paper collages, chalk art, Pequeños Rascal Learning Center dancers and more. It truly was a lively day for families to connect and get information on community resources.

New South Lake Tahoe daycare center opens up for infants to age 13

Pequeños Rascals Daycare has moved into a new center in South Lake Tahoe after operating at a local home for 15 years. Filling a big need on the South Shore, the owners are offering quality care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children up to age 13.

It's not just babysitting either. It's care with a heavy emphasis on education, music, art, physical activity and family.

The public is invited to see for themselves when Pequeños holds an open house on Saturday, March 18 from noon to 5:00 p.m. They are located at 3336 Sandy Way in South Lake Tahoe.

LTUSD accepts South Tahoe High Principal's resignation, search begins for replacement

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board formally accepted the resignation of Chad Houck, the principal of South Tahoe High during their Tuesday night meeting, though word of the upcoming change in leadership had been circulating for weeks.

"Chad will be seeking other opportunities," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater.

The popular principal has received a lot of support from parents, the community and staff.

Local arts organization, Tahoe Art League, has long been serving Tahoe artists and promoting the arts to feed hearts and minds in the south shore. On February 20, the Art League fed the hungry of our community by sponsoring Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall.

South Lake Tahoe school boundaries discussed at next LTUSD board meeting

During the last meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees, discussion about neighborhood schools and theme schools surrounded the proposed STEAM Academy at Al Tahoe Elementary when it reopens. STEAM - science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics - would be the focus of all students at the school, much as the themes surround all other local elementary schools.

At the request of the board, LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater will present the demographic data from each school in relation to where they reside.

Opinion: Why themed schools work in South Lake Tahoe

As we look at reopening the Al Tahoe Elementary School as a STEAM academy, it is important to take a look back at the journey Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has taken to get to where we are today.

Following decades of desegregation efforts and forced busing, lawsuits in the 1990s effectively brought a halt to desegregation efforts in the country. Neighborhood schools in South Lake Tahoe may have been segregated, not only based on race, but based on income levels.
