Transmissions also got better with a standard six-speeder (one extra gear) and in the Touring and Elite trim lines, you’ll get a nine-speeder, which picks achieves about one mpg in the ratings.

Road Beat: 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, electrifying gasoline

Mitsubishi’s Outlander is an outstanding vehicle and value. I gave it very high marks is most categories especially bang for the buck when I tested it about five months ago. With only a 2.4L, 166 hp inline four-banger, it performed admirably. So, what would happen when Mitsu adds a PHEV battery (12 kwh) to the mix? The answer from my numbers is not exceptional.

Column: Simple Ways to Live Happily

I was recently watching the movie Castaway. This time, as I watched, I thought about how it was filmed. As the movie begins, Tom Hanks’ character has a bit of a belly. As the story progresses he becomes thinner and more muscular. I assume the effect was created by filming in reverse; he began as thin and muscular and gained the weight afterward. I began thinking about how easily we can change when we put our minds to it.

Column: Healthy ways to avoid holiday blues

The holiday season can be a happy and joyous time, bringing family and friends together. But for some, it can be a stressful and lonely time, leading to symptoms of depression. When stress is at its peak, unhealthy behaviors, such as drinking alcohol, using drugs, and overeating, tend to take over. Though people use these behaviors to cope and escape difficult emotions, they tend to make things worse.

Road Beat: 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring

The 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring, Only the performance and fuel economy lets you know it’s a hybrid.

Most of you know I haven’t been a fan of hybrids, but that’s changing and this new Honda Accord Hybrid has put me over the edge, it’s the first hybrid I have ever driven you can’t tell the transition from electric to gas or even start-up that it is a hybrid. The only clue is the phenomenal fuel economy, extreme quiet and ethereal smoothness. You simply can’t feel the integration of the gas motor coming on line. I would buy this hybrid for this and so many other reasons.

Letter: The 16th annual Drug Store Project needed now more than ever.

What rattles our communities across our nation to their core? Drug abuse. Approximately 100 people each day die from drug overdoses. Whole industries of products and programs are being developed to combat this problem. Every day more grandparents are now “parenting” their grandchildren so they can be raised in a stable and healthy environment. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costing our Nation over $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and health care.

Removing abandoned cars in South Lake Tahoe

We've all seen them. Trailers and vehicles of all types parked on the side of the road for days, and even weeks or months with no apparent owner. Have you ever wondered what the process is?

In July, a white Mustang was abandoned on the side of Gardner Street behind Les Schwab Tires. It was stripped of everything of value, including tires and parts of the motor. Some remains of this once nice car, along with computer parts were strewn about, left for someone to take care of.

Who is that someone?

Movie Review: The Meg opens in theaters August 10

Let me just say right off the top no, it's not another ripoff of 1975's "Jaws" (although I did think that way when I first saw the trailer). Oh sure there are some parallels taking place in the summer, a huge shark (this one is prehistoric though) and yes, they needed a bigger boat too. That said "The Meg" does stand on its own with the trifecta elements of sarcastic humor, a long standing feud between former friends and of course, a love interest complete with a little girl (played by Shuya Sophia Cai) who at times steals the scenes like most little kids do).
