Editorial: Vote "YES" on Measure L

Measure L is the Library Special Tax on the ballot this year. Twenty years ago the South Lake Tahoe voters passed a library tax where those who owned parcels in the area would be charged $20/parcel per year for the next 20 years to fund the library.

Well, that time period is up so the tax is on the ballot once again. This is not a new tax, just a request for taxpayers to continue paying the same.

Houston’s most recent novel, Contents May Have Shifted, was published in 2012. World Book Night Shares the Love of Reading in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe community was treated to 320 free books on Wednesday night as part of World Book Night.

Volunteers from Friends of the Library gave books out at beaches, bus stops, the El Dorado County Food Bank truck, recreation center, Senior Center, Juvenile Treatment Center, Tahoe Senior Plaza and various other places around town. They announced on Facebook that they were heading out, but didn't disclose locations until after the books were distributed.

"We enjoyed reaching out to others in our community by sharing a special book," said volunteer Lynne Brosch.

Earth Day Celebrated in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday

South Lake Tahoe will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 26th at Bijou Community Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Earth Day was started in 1970 after peace activist John McConnell spoke at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, calling for a day to honor the earth and call for peace. It is now celebrated in 192 countries.

The South Tahoe Earth Day celebration recognizes and promotes our region’s unique beauty while educating the public about local environmental issues.

World Book Night Celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

City Addresses Concerns of South Lake Tahoe Business Community

Learning about how to run a business in South Lake Tahoe isn't always the easiest task, but the City took one step closer to stream lining the process at a community meeting Wednesday night.

Dr. Seuss Hats Off Exhibition Comes to Lake Tahoe

Few authors are better known than Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, yet, to this day, his Secret Art and his fantastical Hat Collection are virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Ted Geisel created paintings and collected hats which he secreted away in a hidden closet at the Dr. Seuss Estate. This is the first time ever that Dr. Seuss’s hats have ever traveled outside his home.

3 Cars Stolen in 16 Hours in South Lake Tahoe; 3 Suspects Arrested

Three Placerville 18 year olds have been arrested in connection with three auto thefts that took place in South Lake Tahoe between 7 p.m. March 31 and 11 a.m. April 1. The trio is also suspected in stealing contents from other cars as well.

Brian Barnes, Elija Kidwell and Sean Murphy were arrested and book into El Dorado County Jail on felony charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy for at least one of the auto thefts and to some of the property thefts.

South Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Lineup Growing

Summer 2014 at Lake Tahoe is going to be a musical one, complete with country, classic rock, new and old and more in between.

Rascal Flatts is the latest to book their trip to South Lake Tahoe. They will be hitting the stage on Sunday, August 24. Tickets go on sale April 11.

The Bean Bar has been open on the south shore of Lake Tahoe since December and has already become a favorite of both South Lake Tahoe locals and visitors.

City of South Lake Tahoe Holds Business Friendly Workshops

English professor releases new book of poems, “Of Dirt and Tar”

Readers will discover “deftly-crafted narrative moments that unreel like snippets of cinema” in the poems of June Sylvester Saraceno’s new book, entitled “Of Dirt and Tar.”

The second, full-length collection of poetry by Saraceno, the English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, will be released March 1 by Cherry Grove Collections, with accolades on its jacket by some of the nation’s top poets.

Movie Night at Lake of the Sky Outfitters

61.8% of South Lake Tahoe Students Receive Free or Reduced Cost Lunches

In a community where the economy and weather affect jobs and business levels, perhaps no better indicator is the number of South Lake Tahoe school students who are dependent on the free or reduced cost school lunch program.

Currently, 61.8% of all students are on these programs in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, ranging from a high of 81.3% of the students at Tahoe Valley Elementary to a low of 19.3% at the Environmental Science Magnet School.

Auditions for Man of La Mancha at LTCC’s Duke Theatre

County Arts Council Adds Lake Tahoe Board Member

Olympic Heritage Week Begins in Lake Tahoe

Local Authors to Read Their New Book "The Crazy Club Gets its Start"

The characters in the story are in third grade, but the book appeals to kids throughout elementary school.

The Friends of the Library are proud to present,Todd Borg, author of the award-winning Owen McKenna Tahoe Murder Mystery Thrillers. Todd will discuss his newest book, Tahoe Chase, and his writing methods with intrigue and humor. He will have all of his books available for purchase and signing.

True Holocaust Story told by Local Author

The Friends of the Library are honored to host Leon Malmed, the author of We Survived...At Last I Speak, the true story of his and his sister’s escape from the Holocaust, in Occupied France, with the help of their courageous and heroic French neighbors.

It is a story of goodness triumphing once more over evil. In addition to sharing his book, the documentary, "17 rue St Fiacre" realized by Daniel Meyers, a Steve Spielberg collaborator, will also be shown.

Musical phenomenon 'RENT' to hit the LTCC Duke Theatre stage

The Lake Tahoe Community College Theatre Arts Department is excited to present the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, “RENT,” with book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson.

Performances are June 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 at 8:00 p.m., with Sunday matinees on June 16 and 23 at 2:00 p.m. Set in New York City’s East Village, "RENT" follows the lives of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians as they struggle to survive and create in Manhattan’s Lower East Side during the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, and under the shadow of the AIDS epidemic.
