Author of children’s adventure books, Mary Randall will speak on her book “A Walk Through the Woods” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 8, at 10:00 a.m.

In her book Mary Randall asks the reader to believe in magic and have a zest for adventure as they trek along with Bobby and his pals through the Magic Kingdom of the woods. The reader will encounter talking animals, twists, turns, and secrets along with Indian spirits and ghosts of the Civil War. Randall hopes that readers will enjoy this amazing journey of surprises, mysteries and fun.

After taking the South Tahoe High Varsity Girls Soccer team to back-to-back NIAA state championships, coach Jeremy Evans has left the program to become the new Lake Tahoe Community College women's head soccer coach.

LTCC found themselves without a women's coach after first year Coyote coach Christian DeLeon recently left the program to become the new women's head coach at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village.

Bona Fide Books will host an art reception for plein air painter Claudia A. Garza on Fri., May 1, 6:30-8:30 pm at its shop in Meyers. This event is free and open to the public.

Raised in Chicago, Garza is a longtime art lover who began studying with Phyllis Shafer and Dave Russo at Lake Tahoe Community College when she moved to South Lake Tahoe in 2004.

There are many sides to the South Lake Tahoe Vacation Home Rental (VHR) situation. On one side are the locals whose peaceful lives have been disturbed because they are the neighbors of vacation home rentals that are reportedly out of control with excess noise and trash that come from inconsiderate renters. On another side are the people wanting to enjoy South Lake Tahoe from the comfort of a private home. Yet another side are the second home owners who want to earn money from their vacation home.

Knowing that not all South Lake Tahoe kids plan on heading to a four-year college, John McDougall wanted to help those students find their vocational path.

And he is accomplishing this in two ways: Pay it Forward Scholarships and with a High School Mentoring Program.

"I'm helping kids that are taking the vocational path," said the 1972 South Tahoe high graduate.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series proudly presents an evening with novelist Gayle Brandeis and short story writer Dimitri Keriotis on Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Aspen Room, inside the library building. The two writers will read selections from their works, answer audience questions, and sign copies of their books, which will be available for sale. This event is free and open to the public.

Nevada's sports books took in the second-biggest Super Bowl betting take ever, with $116 million wagered for Sunday's thriller won by the New England Patriots, 28-24, over the Seattle Seahawks.

From that, the sports books won $3.25 million, or 2.8 percent of the total, according to the report Monday by the State Gaming Control Board.

A year ago, bettors put down a record $119.4 million in Nevada sports books with the books the victors, winning $19.67 million after Seattle's 43-8 romp over the favored Denver Broncos.

The resurgence of small and unique businesses in South Lake Tahoe continues with the opening of the Wildwood DIY Boutique.

Owner Liza Utzig Schafer, a long time local resident, opened the shop in December and she says she's been busy ever since.

One can call her store an "in-person" Etsy, which is an e-commerce website full of handmade, unique and vintage items and supplies. Schafer's store is full of craft items, locally handmade items as well as things from independent artists.

Many of us spend January 1 making resolutions and the other 364 days trying to stay resolved to keeping them. Golden Bear Events presents the 2015 Annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show and is offering Early Bird discounts for booth space through January 1, 2015. The show will be held on Friday, April 24th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, April 25th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The cost of a 10 x 10 foot space is $145.00 total for both days until January 1, 2015. Regular price is $195.00.

Stories for all ages make up author Johanne Carreau Cronk's first book, My Father's Big Toe, and now the book is available during a book signing and storytelling day at Tahoe Toys and Treasures.

The book is about world traveler and former South Lake Tahoe resident Gilbert Carreau and the stories he would tell his children as they gathered around.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe are once again collaborating to honor two women in our community with the LIVE YOUR DREAM award. Eligible applicants must be women who provide the primary financial support for their families, and are attending an undergraduate degree program or a vocational skills training program.

My Girl Scout Gold Award project is called "Easy Access Books," mini-library program. The project began after realizing the difficulty for community members without permanent residence to obtain a library card and access books. Therefore, I created a mini-library in the lobby of the Barton Community Health Center to provide patients access to books and reading material. With the help of the Barton Auxiliary, The Barton Attic Thrift Store, and generous donations from employees and community members, the library has been fully stocked since April.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council recently voted to offer reduced parking tickets to businesses in the Heavenly Village in order to get more of them on board with offering validation to their customers.

Businesses can now pay one dollar for an hour of validation. The movie theater pays $.35 per hour for their tickets. They previously offered free validation to movie goers for four hours of parking but that will now be reduced to three hours.

The city is looking for ways to advertise participating businesses on signage in the city owned garage.

Guidelines for the operation of Bingo games in South Lake Tahoe are to be voted on during the City Council meeting on September 2. In an effort to clean up the city's code, City Attorney Tom Watson has been evaluating and updating all rules in the books, and the Bingo rules are part of this change.

The first week of school in South Lake Tahoe is in the books, and the early numbers show that enrollment is up for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's seven schools.

Many students had to miss the first day of school since they didn't have their paperwork and immunizations completed, which are both required to attend local schools.

Angie Keil, the Public Information Officer for LTUSD, said that it was a hectic first week of school but so far the enrollment numbers show that there are 3,877 students in school. This is up by 156 from the end of school figures from June.

This event has been canceled by organizers.

The South Lake Tahoe Slow Rollers are asking the local community to help them attempt breaking the world record for people riding bikes in a single line, which is 917. During the first attempt two years ago there were plenty of cyclists, 1188, but many people rode two or more across and sometimes had gaps in the line so it was too hard for officials to certify the ride.

Gary Noy, author of Sierra Stories: Tales of Dreamers, Schemers, Bigots and Rogues, will sign books and lecture as a Benefit for the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center on August 2, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The author will make a presentation and sign books to help raise money for the agency.

The event will take place at the Center’s Bookworks Bookstore located at 3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.
