LTCC women's soccer team on top of national coaches poll for 4th straight week
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/18/2019 - 8:46amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team is on top of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III for the fourth consecutive week. On September 25 they rose to the top spot of the list and haven't left since then.
Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1. The team the women lost too in last year's state final, Santiago Canyon College, dropped to the twelfth-ranked team.

Nurses in four states go on strike including those at Barton Hospital
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/20/2019 - 9:33pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Hospital nurses went from the operating room to the picket line Friday morning, saying their 15 months of union contract negotiations with their employer have not done enough to address health benefits for nurses.
The nurses with their signs spread out on the four corners of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and 3rd Street as well as across the street from the hospital on South Street.
El Dorado County Employment Resource Center reopens in South Lake Tahoe

Repairs completed include carpet replacement, minor mold remediation and painting.
The Employment Resource Center provides free job assistance services to El Dorado County residents who are looking for jobs or want to improve their job readiness skills. There is no income requirement to use the Center.

$100K from 30th annual American Century Championship to be given to local nonprofits

There was an attendance record of 60,550, an economic impact estimated at $30 million for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and now an additional $100,000 will be given away to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Township non-profits.

Ms. Penn will explain forensics, DNA and Genealogy in the final capture of the Golden State Killer. This is the true story of what we know about who this notorious killer is.

New fire preparedness tools unveiled by the City of South Lake Tahoe

Residents around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra know this all too well and have been talking about concerns of wildfire threats in and around the Tahoe Basin. Those conversations have turned into plans and the City of South Lake Tahoe has just released an interactive website to help both residents and visitors map out an evacuation plan based on their neighborhood.

The Business Duck Best of Show went to Lukin's Water Company and they chose to donate their $100 prize money to High Sierra Softball. First runner up was Base Camp Pizza, followed by SLT Mini-Storage with both of their entries in the top four, and honorable mentions went to Soroptimists International of Tahoe Sierra and Azul Latin Kitchen.

Lizzie Andrew Borden was tried and acquitted in a court of law for the axe murders of her father and stepmother in 1892, in Fall River, Massachusetts. The court of public opinion sentenced her to a life of public scrutiny and branded her a social pariah.

Reuters: Sources say Eldorado Resorts clinches $18 billion cash and stock deal for Caesars

The agreement comes three months after Reuters reported that Caesars had agreed to give Eldorado access to its books under pressure from billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who earlier this year was awarded seats on Caesars’ board.

Officers will be at the library in South Lake Tahoe each Friday at 10:30 a.m. starting June 21 to read stories for the youth in our community in English and the Spanish version, Libros Y Placas, every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Each storytime will last about one hour and is suitable for families with young children.

A group of locals from South Lake Tahoe are leaving town next weekend with backpacks filled with stuffed animals, toys, books, art supplies and more that will go to migrant children living with their families in shelters in Tijuana.
John Friedrich, his wife Kim and daughter Rosie will be going to Mexico joined by another local, Joanna Lilly, with the collected items. They've had help from the Bijou Community School PTA and South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) Spanish Teacher Krissi Russell.
3,500 books donated by Soroptimists to local students for summer reading

This week, club members under the direction of member Cookie Rork distributed 3,500 books to students at all local schools from Zephyr Cove to Meyers. In Grades Pre-K to 2nd, students received two books to keep, while 3rd to 8th graders got one to help with summer reading.

Violations of distracted driving laws continue to increase despite education

During April, 19,850 citations were issued to drivers who violated California’s hands-free cell phone laws. This is a 3.6 percent increase from April 2018.

Bids on "Ovals in the Woods" are accepted online and bidders do not have to attend the event to participate.
Tibbetts left the Heavenly management team in 2002 to start a new career that would work within his longtime love of woodworking. He is now a full-time studio artist designing, engineering and creating amazing works of art in segmented woodturning.

16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

Teachers fill LTUSD board room to ask for pay increases

Jodi Dayberry, President of the South Tahoe Educators Association, led the teachers in their presentation to the LTUSD Board of Trustees, telling the five elected members teachers are struggling due to the high cost of living and many have second jobs and summer jobs to fill their financial void.

Column: Nobody should be food insecure

I do and so do over 49 million Americans who are what we call “food insecure.” It is a feeling that can best be described as a fist inside of your stomach ever-so-slowly tightening until you are writhing in pain.
Having a nutritious diet has a direct correlation in academic success, psychological well-being, growth, and overall health. A lack of proper nutrition is estimated to cause 678, 000 deaths in the US each year.
Column: SLTPD and EDSO saves woman's life with arrest
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/13/2019 - 10:25amAfter a six-month investigation into drug transactions in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the El Dorado Sheriff's Department Narcotics Task Force executed search warrants at two locations in South Lake Tahoe on August 23, 2017. Large amounts of heroin, methamphetamine and approximately 12 firearms were seized in the search. Lynwood Towle, Shawn German, Melissa Griffis, Paul Ryan, and Krystal Long were all arrested, charged, and eventually pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from those searches.
Two local Soroptimist clubs donate books to Camp Fire victims
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/07/2019 - 1:20amThe Soroptimist Club of South Lake Tahoe and Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra joined together in gathering books to donate to young Camp Fire victims.
Club members donated dozens of books which were sent to the Colusa County Farm Bureau who held a children's book drive to benefit elementary schools and families in the Paradise area.
The Camp Fire in Butte County is the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history. Tens of thousands of people remain displaced after the November 8, 2018 fire destroyed 153,336 acres, 18,804 buildings and killed 86 civilians.

This year saw the introduction of professional sound engineers to help reduce the sound and new field protection to prevent further damage to our new play fields. The sound is reported to have been improved for many though the people who live nearest this event in Pioneer Village, along the Bijou Meadow, around Johnson Lane and in Sierra Tract continue to be bombarded by three days of sound.

SnowGlobe addresses many issues; NoGlobe Alliance remains concerned with sound
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/03/2019 - 11:32pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - SnowGlobe 2018 is in the books, and according to law enforcement and other safety personnel as well as festival organizers, it was the most successful one yet.
There were fewer arrests and citations, fewer medical issues and an increase in community collaboration to help the event be both successful and less of a burden to the neighboring residents who have expressed concern over noise from the bass-centric sounds of the electronic music performers on the outdoor stages.
Sierra House students could have split schedule at Al Tahoe until mid-February
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/14/2018 - 12:26amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The third graders from Sierra House Elementary are now at the Al Tahoe school site, and on Monday, December 17, the rest of the students will join them. At first it was believed that work could possibly be completed by the time students return to school after the holiday break but now that the hired restoration specialists are getting into the walls and ceiling the scope of work has increased.
Belfor cannot commit to the scope of work until the crews get into their job, so the plan is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As of today, the
