Outdoors with Don Q: Things you need to know about ice fishing

With the bitter January cold weather in the Sierra and above Lake Tahoe behind us, we do have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. And that ice covering provides an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
Ice fishing is a unique sport that requires a whole different set of fishing techniques, gear and clothing, as opposed to lazy fishing on a warm, drowsy day in the middle of the summer. So, if you’ve never tried fishing through the ice, here’s some information that should be more than enough to get you “hooked” on this winter sport:

Your favorite Carson memory could become a part of an historic mural being painted at the Carson Nugget by renown Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo.

The mural already features special Carson City landmarks, people and events and there is room for 15 additions. So, the Carson Nugget is looking for photographs that depict memorable Carson moments – dating anytime from
pre-1900 to present day – to add to the mural. The mural is located outside the banquet rooms and will be seen by thousands of people each year.

Genoa Vista Trail Dedication Ceremony set for Saturday

A dedication ceremony of the new Genoa Vista Trail will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at at the north end of the trail on Foothill Road across from Carson Street. The event is open to the public and participants are encouraged to walk or bike the 1.3 mile trail to 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort and Spa where refreshments will be served.

Fire at South Lake Tahoe home had marijuana grow operation

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded early Sunday morning to a house fire at Carson and Armstrong avenues where there was a marijuana grow operation.

According to a news release, all three South Tahoe Fire engines and both medic units were committed at the fire scene, reported at 12:30 a.m. The fire was knocked down quickly so both primary and secondary searches were completed with no victims found and overhaul began.

Liberty Energy and Southwest Gas responded to secure the utilities and SLTFD was able to shut down the
water to the house.

Douglas County authorities seek public help in solving Carson Valley burglaries

Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigators are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspects responsible for several burglaries that occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The unknown suspects committed burglaries at four separate locations in Douglas County; including a commercial burglary at the Genoa Bar, two burglaries at unoccupied homes in a residential neighborhood in Genoa, and several vehicle burglaries at two local auto repair shops in Gardnerville.

November figures for South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos show the largest spike statewide in earnings or "win" at 26.63 percent over November 2011 profits, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

South Lake Tahoe casinos took in $17,734,866 in November 2012 compared to $14,005,506 in 2011.

Few overnight DUI arrests on Northern Nevada highways during critical New Year's holiday stretch

More than 275 traffic enforcement stops were made by Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on Northern Nevada highways in a 10-hour period from 7 pm Monday until 5 am Tuesday morning.

Only seven motorists, or roughly three percent, stopped during that timeframe were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Many of those motorists stopped were designated drivers for passengers riding in the vehicle who were celebrating the New Year and had already consumed alcohol.

A Final Wave for 'The Waver' Ed Carlson today in Reno

Fans of the late Ed Carlson, known as "The Waver" to Northern Nevadans, will pay tribute to his life and the many lives he touched at noon today, New Year's Day, at Reno City Plaza for a short memorial service, according to a news release.

Following the service attendees will then walk one mile south on South Virginia Street while waving to oncoming traffic as The Waver did for some many years before returning to City Plaza.

Authorities prepare for Lake Tahoe New Year's Eve party at Stateline

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is readying itself for the upcoming New Years Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe beginning Monday, Dec. 31. Each year upwards of 60,000 celebrants ring in the New Year in the casino core area of Stateline, Nev.

Due to the ordinarily high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during the event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra brace for winter storms to arrive as Christmas travel period begins

A series of strong winter storms will arrive in three waves and when it is over, anywhere from 2 to 5 feet of snow will have dropped above Lake Tahoe, at ski resorts, on highways and throughout much of the Sierra in time for Christmas.

A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through Monday morning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra as a strong series of systems moves into the region.

Periods of light to moderate snow will begin Friday and intensive early Saturday morning with moderate to heavy snow Saturday through Sunday night.

Nevada Governor Sandoval Asks For Assessment Of School Security

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today said he wants an assessment of how Nevada’s public schools are doing in regards to security following the horrific shooting deaths a week ago at a Connecticut elementary school.
Sandoval made the request as chairman of the state Homeland Security Commission, which met today by teleconference. A presentation will be prepared for the next meeting of the commission.

A Gardnerville woman is recovering from mild frostbite at a Carson City hospital after spending six nights in Hope Valley.
Gardnerville resident Paula Lane, 46, and boyfriend Roderick Paul Clifton, 44, were reported missing after they left Citrus Heights, Calif., on the afternoon of Nov. 29.
On Wednesday, Lane was found along Burnside Lake Road by her brother, who took a frontloader from a nearby state transportation shed and drove up the road.

HOPE VALLEY, CALIF. - A family member of Roderick Clifton called KOLO 8 News Now Wednesday night saying the couple missing since last Thursday has been found and are headed to Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City.

Fog settles in Lake Tahoe and nearby valleys through the morning

Recent rainfall and clearing skies may allow areas of fog to develop across the Lake Tahoe Basin, northeast California and western Nevada through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service in Reno reports visibility could drop below one mile with a few areas of dense fog and visibility below 1/4 of a mile early Thursday morning. Fog will begin to burn off after 8 a.m., and may linger in a few valleys until 11 a.m.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Wind Advisory from 10 Thursday night through 4 p.m. Friday for areas above 7,000 feet. Outdoors with Don Q: Sigh, so-called 'Man's Favorite Sport' belongs to Elaine

Last Thursday, Elaine and I spent an enjoyable morning (as usual) fishing for Mackinaw (Lake) Trout at Lake Tahoe with our longtime friend and sport fishing guide, Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

"Gino" has fished Tahoe for some 30 years and is one of the top, if not the top, fishing guides at that lake.
Sigh, and as usual on that day, Man's Favorite Sport belonged to Elaine for the fourth straight year!
