Lightning sparks wildfire in hills south of Spooner Summit
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/16/2014 - 10:15pmA brush fire started just after 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night in the hills above Carson City between Jacks Valley Road and Clear Creek Road. Fire officials are calling it the Clear Creek Fire and it had burned 150 acres as of 9:45 p.m. The area is not easily accessible. Hot Shots were dropped onto the hills nearby to fight the fire as well as drops from three air tankers and two helicopters. Hand crews will stay on the fire during the night.
The fire was started by lightning and the region saw dozens more lightning strikes into the evening.
Cyclist seriously injured in Cave Rock accident
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/11/2014 - 11:17amA tractor trailer collided with a bicyclist inside the tunnel at Cave Rock on Thursday, resulting in serious injuries to the cyclist.
Clarence Aldridge, 48, from Bakersfield, CA was riding his bike eastbound on Highway 50 just before 10 a.m. July 10th. He was traveling through the Cave Rock tunnel at the same time Richard Pettay, 39, of Carson City, NV was driving his Kenworth tractor truck and trailer.

South Shore Casinos Have Big Gain: Win Up 18% in May
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/27/2014 - 7:26amCasinos in South Lake Tahoe won $17,320,995 in May, up 18.37% over last year. They gained the most in the State of Nevada which saw an overall win of 8.11%.
North Lake Tahoe casinos won %1,837,836, up 1.63% and casinos in the Carson Valley lost 2.71% with their win of $8,618,391.
Since the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1, the South Lake Tahoe casinos are down 3.41% with a total gaming win of $192,212,817.
The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
Forest Service and South Lake Tahoe Police Urge Safety for 4th of July

Douglas County Sheriff's Office Searching for Runaway 12 Year Old

Cara Breann Valerie, age 12, has been missing from her grandparent's home in Minden, Nevada since Saturday and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding her.
She is believed to have run away to the Reno area and may be in the company of Samson Martinez, age unknown.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."
The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.
The second segment of the Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Shore Demonstration Project adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles. Meanwhile, the North Demonstration Project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and the first phase will connect Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.

The suspect, identified as 55 year old Brent Muir of Carson City, was sighted near Sand Harbor by FBI agents responding to the robbery from South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Regional Plan Being Challenged in Court by Sierra Club Once Again

Since that time, the Sierra Club and "Friends of the West Shore" have sued (in February 2013) to oppose the plan, lost their motion (April 2014) and now, as of May 7, have filed an appeal to the court's decision to uphold the 2012 Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.

Man Arrested For Stalking Douglas High Student; Sheriff's Office Looking Into More Cases

A school official observed 59 year old Rodney Minton Skan watching participants at the school event, became suspicious and reported him to a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy who was at the meet.
The deputy began watching Skan and noticed he was watching and videotaping a specific student. As soon as Skan realized he was being watched, he attempted to leave the area.
19 Nabbed in Phony Contractor Sting in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/02/2014 - 9:24pmA simultaneous sting operation between the California State License Board and the Nevada Contractors License Board snared 11 people on the California side of South Lake Tahoe and 8 on the Nevada side on Wednesday.
Named the "Border Blitz," the sting was conducted at a SLT single family home near the Hwy 89 and Hwy 50 intersection (the "Y")and at a condominium in Stateline, NV. Investigators from the CSLB and NCLB posed as homeowners seeking bids for various projects that included exterior painting, deck work, landscaping, and other tasks requiring general "B" contractor skills.

An accident on Tuesday between a car and a big rig on Highway 50 near Dayton, NV has claimed the life of 18 year old David Arroyo Lamas.

Motorcycle Driver Succumbs to Injuries Suffered from Accident in Carson City

20 year old Andrey Gallegos of Sparks, Nevada was taken off life support on March 30. He suffered major injuries in the accident which occurred at the corner of Roop and Fairview Streets.

Each year a doctor on staff at Barton is voted on by peers and staff and awarded the honor on "Doctor's Day."
South Lake Tahoe Woman Involved in Motorcycle Crash Dies of Her Injuries

Audrey G. Rugamas was taken off life support on Wednesday, March 26. Ms. Rugamas had received severe injuries in the accident which also injured the motorcycle's driver, 20 year old Andrey L. Gallegos of Sparks, NV. An update on his condition has not been released.

The Nevada Highway Patrol(NHP) was called to the scene of a motorcycle accident at the intersection of Roop and Fairview Streets at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.

NHP: South Lake Tahoe Woman Critically Injured in Carson City Motorcycle Crash

The names of the victims have not been released but the passenger of the unregistered green 2007 Suzuki motorcycle is a 21-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman and the driver, 20, is from Nebraska, said NHP Trooper Dan Lopez. They were flown separately to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

South Shore's Horizon Casino Resort to Close April 1

The resort was the one time local showcase of Elvis Presley and Liberace when the casino operated as Del Webb's Sahara Tahoe. In 1990 Del Webb sold the property to Kentucky based Columbia Sussex Corporation for $19 million.
Columbia Sussex owners, the Yung family, are the current operators under the corporate name, LV Casino LLC. Their lease ran out and long time Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley ranchers, the Park family, will take control after March 31.
Kingsbury Grade Closing to Through Traffic in May, September and October

Since this will have an impact on local businesses, residents and commuters, a forum was held on Wednesday in order to inform the community about the impact.

South Tahoe High's Connor McKeen came in 1st in the boys' races with a total combined time of 1:01.79. Grant Dunkelman of Douglas came in 2nd at 1:02.98 followed by Harrison Goss of North Tahoe 1:03.55.
Maia Bickert from South Tahoe High came in 1st in the girls' races with a time of 1:02.96, followed by Cheyenne Brown of Truckee with a time of 1:04.86 and Laurel Taylor of Incline at 1:07.66.

On top of that goal, Brooke wants to collect the most jeans in the region so her school will be awarded a $10,000 grant.

On December 11, a felony warrant was issued for Kathryn Ann Moore, 44, when she failed to return the children in a court mandated return to their father.
