SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A weekend-long celebration of the holidays will be at the historic Valhalla Grand Hall and Boathouse Theater November 16-18, 2018.

The annual Valhalla Holiday Faire will feature a variety of local and regional arts and crafts vendors, a Grand Hall decked out in traditional holiday style, refreshments from their bar, photos with Santa and the Valhalla raffle and holiday cheer to kick off the season in true Tahoe style.

60-foot South Lake Tahoe community tree cut for Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rockefeller Center in New York City has a Christmas tree as a backdrop for all holiday activities in the Big City since 1933, and now South Lake Tahoe is starting what hopes to be an annual tradition. Standing at 60-feet, the local version isn't quite as big as their neighbor on the East Coast (which runs 60-100 feet and can weigh close to 30,000 pounds), but it serve as a place to warm hearts and be a center of holiday photos and fun.

South Lake Tahoe honors veterans at American Legion ceremony

Each of us is better today thanks to a veteran. These were the opening words of the annual Veterans Day observance at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday.

"Today we honor all veterans as we do in times of peace and in times of war," said Mayor Wendy David. "Sadly the Great War wasn't the war to end all wars.

"To our vets, thanks will never be enough," she added.

William "Bill" Horning 1957 ~ 2018

William Horning was born March 3, 1957. His family moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1959 when Bill was 2 ½ years old. He graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1975. Bill worked in the casino industry for 36 years and was employed by Marriott Timber Lodge when he passed.

Bill passed on to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by Dany, his loving wife of 16 years. He will be missed by all his friends that loved him so much.

Eveyone a winner as W.E. C.A.R.E Sports visits South Lake Tahoe schools

W.E. C.A.R.E. Sports has spent the week in South Lake Tahoe, visiting each elementary school thanks to a grant awarded by the Tahoe Women's Community Fund to bring the program to Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

The Oregon-based organization helps support the physical development and social-emotional tenets for young children by teaching life skills and building self-esteem.

Every child is on an equal playing field as they are introduced to unique alternative sports in a positive non-judgmental environment where everyone wins.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund to honor two locals during Membership Celebration Dinner

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF) will be celebrating two local women during their annual Membership Celebration Dinner on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Tahoe Beach Retreat. Tickets are on sale now for $35 each and can be purchased online at tahoewomenscommunityfund.org.

Everyone is welcome to attend, and it is the perfect opportunity to get to know the organization if you are not already a member.

Reef's Run for Hydrocephalus Awareness in Lake Tahoe Sunday

A 2.5-mile fun run (and stroll) will be held on the South Shore Sunday, September 9 to raise awareness of Hydrocephalus, a condition most have never heard of yet it affects over one million people in the United States.

Runners (and walkers) will start at Shoreline of Tahoe on Kahle Drive in Stateline and end at Round Hill Pines Beach Resort. The cost is $40 for those 15 and older, $20 for kids 14 and under. Those running the course will start at 8:30 a.m., and walkers/strollers start at 8:45 a.m.

Costumes and tutus are encouraged, as well as the wearing of "Hydrocephalus Blue."

Great Sierra River Cleanup

Join the 10th annual Great Sierra River Cleanup in conjunction with California Coastal Cleanup day. Hundreds of volunteers will be going out this day cleaning up the Lake Tahoe region on Saturday, September 15 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Bring your reusable water bottle, gloves if you have them and friends! Snacks and equipment provided.

A lunch celebration for volunteers will be hosted after the cleanup at the League to Save Lake Tahoe office at 2608 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. Beer will be provided by Oskar Blues and wine by Robert Mondavi.

Letter: Bijou Garden Grows Community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Family Resource Center (FRC) has long been a stronghold for the South Lake Tahoe community, providing necessary life services to community members in need. This summer, the FRC was especially busy with the ninth year of Parabajitos, an early intervention and prevention program that aims to engage youth and strengthen their connection with their community. The FRC is also home to the Bijou Community Garden, a project started four years ago by community member Brian Hirdman.

Laser Show and full slate of events over Labor Day Weekend in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Labor Day officially marks the end of the summer season in Lake Tahoe and weekend-long celebrations are spread throughout the South Shore September 1-3, 2018.

Labor Day Lasers at Lakeview return to Lakeview Commons on Sunday, September 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Besides a laser show that uses the tall pines as a backdrop there will be food trucks, a dozen local vendors where people can purchase handcrafted goods and clothing, and a wine and beer garden.

Guest Columnist: Out in the forest with your forest supervisor

First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are with the communities and forests affected by the destructive and tragic wildfires across California, Nevada, and the West. Our Lake Tahoe Basin firefighters are responding to both local and national wildfires and providing assistance to those in need. I am very proud of each one and know their families go through added stress during their absence.

This time of year, wildfire suppression can overtake our thoughts and activities, however, a great amount of work is occurring around the Lake Tahoe Basin to create more resilient forests.

Lake Tahoe Historical Society holding Chautauqua 2018 in honor of 50th anniversary

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2018, and part of that celebration is Chautauqua at Lake Tahoe on August 18 at the Duke Theatre on the campus of Lake Tahoe Community College.

Professional actors will portray local figures in history, Duane L. Bliss, Lillian Virgin Finnegan and George Whittell, Jr. Doug Mishler will perform as Bliss, Kim Harris as Finnegan and Steve Hale as Whittell.

South Lake Tahoe Police busy with Phish concert goers and trash

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) had their hands full on Tuesday before, during and after the first of two Phish concerts at the outdoor arena at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Trash including empty alcohol bottles and beer boxes littered much of the open space surrounding Stateline and Cedar Avenues where hundreds of fans lined the streets. In addition to the trash, pop-up tents with vendors starting selling clothing and other items illegally.

The owner of the corner property, chateau at the Village, sent out crews to help clean, according to SLTPD Lt. David Stevenson.

South Lake Tahoe athletes celebrated at Walk of Champions unveiling

"Today is a very special day," South Lake Tahoe Mayor Wendy David said as she opened the unveiling ceremony for the Walk of Champions Friday. "Local athletes are honored for giving South Lake Tahoe recognition on the international and national stage."

Unsafe tree removed at Heavenly Village, plans unveiled for what's next

Many saw the large tree at Heavenly Village as they drove or walked by, not knowing that it was a hazard and deemed unsafe to be around pedestrians. On Monday, June 4, the tree was cut down by the contractor hired to bring it down, Kenny Curtzwiler and K & K Services, and another local business, Frank's Stump Grinding, took care of the remains and ground level and below.

The 90 foot tree is now firewood, but Dreu Murin of the Heavenly Village management team told South Tahoe Now what is going in its place.

69th annual Hwy 50 Wagon Train rides through South Lake Tahoe

The Highway 50 Wagon Train will once again traverse the Sierra this week, just as the pioneers of the 1800s once did. People seeking riches headed west after gold was discovered near Placerville in 1849, but their routes were varied as very few had traveled that direction before them.

SLTPD honors and promotes during National Police Week

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) held the annual awards ceremony Thursday, honoring the retirement of K9 Tara, the promotion of Jeff Roberson to Sergeant, awards for bravery and for service.

The celebration was started with the National Anthem sung by South Tahoe High School senior Caroline Krolicki and a presentation of the colors by the department's Honor Guard.

Winners of Amgen in Lake Tahoe move on to Sacramento and finish as champions

Egan Bernal, Team Sky’s 21-year-old Colombian rider, defended his lead from Thursday's race in Lake Tahoe to claim the 2018 Amgen Tour of California championship by the second largest margin in race history, +1.25” ahead of BMC Racing Team’s U.S. rider Tejay van Garderen. Team EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale’s Daniel Martinez (COL) rounds out third place overall.

2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival schedule announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The coming months at the historic Valhalla Grand Hall, Grand Lawn and Boathouse Theater will be busy with a full slate of activities planned for the 2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival.

The festival is Valhalla Tahoe’s flagship event, a unique celebration of music, theatre and the visual arts. The festival is set against the magnificent backdrop of Lake Tahoe and the Tallac Historic Site. Looking forward to its 34th year, it is produced by Valhalla Tahoe.

The Festival begins in mid-June with events and activities that continue throughout August.

Spring Cleanup 2018 coming up in South Lake Tahoe

Help spruce up South Lake Tahoe neighborhoods and "Keep Tahoe Clean" on Saturday, May 12 during the 3rd annual Spring Cleanup day. Last year, 118 volunteers spent a morning picking up nearly 1,500 pounds of trash.

The Clean Tahoe Program and City of South Lake Tahoe are organizing the day, so get together with your friends, family and neighbors to remove litter from our community. Check-in at the cleanup locations will begin at 9:00 a.m. and volunteers will be assigned a stretch of road to clean. Afterwards, everyone will meet up at Bijou Park for a FREE lunch and celebration.

Celebration of Life for Jean Gurney

The community of South Lake Tahoe lost a beloved member when Jean Gurney passed away on April 24, 2018. Like Lake Tahoe, Jean made people feel relaxed, elevated, and happy.

Jean was born on May 31, 1945 in Longview, Texas, to Viola and Frank Gurney. She spent her formative years in Massachusetts with her parents and sister Ann, and graduated from Minnechaug Regional High School in 1963.

National Day of Prayer observed in South Lake Tahoe

The first national call to prayer came in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. Since then, a call to prayer has continued from President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863 to an annual national day of prayer signed by a joint resolution by Congress in 1952 that was signed by President Truman.

Now, the National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday in May.

Climate March in South Lake Tahoe

The second People's Climate March will take place on Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m., prior to the South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Celebration.

The Tahoe Climate Change Action Network organized the inaugural march in 2017 to coincide marches across the country and the huge national march in Washington, D.C. marking President Trump's 100th day in office. Marches protested the President's environmental policies, changes to the Environmental Protection Agency and the rolling back of Obama-era regulations on fossil fuels.

Chuck Montgomery 1954~2018

Charles Reinhardt "Chuck" Montgomery passed peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2018 in South Lake Tahoe, California with his family by his side. He was 64 years old. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana June 28, 1954, Chuck was the first born son of Charles Williams Montgomery (1932-1970) and Eleanora Irene Hodges Montgomery Kroeger.

Unity at the Lake guest to offer a Sound Blessing

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces winners of $68,000 in grants

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) has announced the non-profit organizations on the South Shore who have been selected to receive grants in the amount of $68,000.

During their 2018 grant cycle, over 25 organizations applied for grants and 13 of them are being supported by TWCF and will be honored during their Grants Gala
on Wednesday, May 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

Dr. Keith Swanson named the 2018 Barton Doctor of the Year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The votes have been counted and Dr. Keith Swanson has been named Barton Health’s Doctor of the Year. Each year, hundreds of Barton team members cast their vote to nominate a favorite physician in honor of National Doctor’s Day, and the 2018 winner was announced at Barton’s Doctor’s Day Celebration on March 29.

“We honor Dr. Swanson as our Doctor of the Year, and the incredible contributions he’s made to the community as an orthopedic surgeon and practitioner of nearly 40 years,” said Dr. Clint Purvance, CEO at Barton Health.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College Art Department instructor Shelley Zentner brings her large-scale portraits inspired by stories of freedom and expression to the Fine Arts building’s Foyer Gallery in her exhibit, “Fundamental Freedoms.” Zentner will host an artist reception and talk on Thursday, April 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. inside the Foyer Gallery. Mayor of South Lake Tahoe Wendy David will officially open the exhibit at 6:30 p.m., followed by an artist’s talk from Zentner. Wine and canapés will be served, and all are welcome to attend.
