A Celebration of Life has been set for long-time local resident Doug Madden who passed away on February 1, 2019.

Mickey and Doug had been married for 48 years. He is also survived by daughter Shannon Crowe, daughter Kendra Miesner, and granddaughters Brianna and Adrienne. He was an avid dog lover and Cleo and Jake will miss him very much.

USFS Taylor Creek Stream Profile Chamber: Grand reopening June 7

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Stream Profile Chamber at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center has been closed since the glass broke during a routine cleaning almost one year ago. With financial help from the Tahoe Fund and Tahoe Blue Vodka, those walking the Rainbow Trail will once again be able to get an up-close underwater view of aquatic life and the spawning Kokanee salmon at Lake Tahoe each year.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is holding a grand reopening celebration of the chamber with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon on Friday, June 7.

70th Anniversary of the Wagon Train through South Lake Tahoe Sunday

Susan Allison Mancini ~ 3/26/62 - 4/30/19

Allison, also affectionately known as Allidaughter, was born in Bishop, California to Mary Strobel and Robert Dietz when Robert was the manager of the Mammoth Mountain Inn.

She attended Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood and graduated from South Lake Tahoe High School. She studied at El Camino College and Lake Tahoe Community College.

Allison was an accomplished sailor spending almost every weekend during her early high school years sailing to Catalina Island.

Two SLTPD officers earn Meritorious Service awards at South Lake Tahoe ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual awards ceremony on Thursday, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) honored two of their officers for their response to a shooting on June 30. 2018.

SLTPD officers Derek Simon and Anton Kushlan earned the "Meritorious Service" award for selfless acts in the wake of a shooting.

Bread & Broth celebrates 30 years, volunteers and Father Grace just before his death

Chabad at Lake Tahoe is holding an "Evening of Unity, Solidarity and Prayer" in response in the wake of the horrific Poway Chabad House shooting that left one dead and three injured.

“Our hearts are shattered by the cold-blooded attack on our brothers and sisters—Jews of all walks of life gathered at Chabad of Poway in celebration and prayer to the Almighty on Shabbat and the final day of Passover,” said Rabbi Mordey Richler. “We mourn the holy soul of Lori Gilbert-Kaye, and we pray for the healing of all the injured.”

With only two months until summer, South Tahoe High School is getting ready for end-of-year school spirit activities and dances. Students also took the time to prepare for tonight’s Black Light Dance and celebrate Earth Day.

On Campus
This week, students went online to select their schedule for next year.

Black Light Dance is in the student union 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. tonight. Before the dance, the Black Light Rally is being held in the school’s gym at noon.

LTUSD recognizes staff on California Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Bus drivers in Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) were honored today during a celebration of California Bus Driver Appreciation Day.

The special day was created by the state legislature in 2009 “in order to draw special public attention to school bus drivers for their continued and excellent services to pupils in California.” After being created in the state, it has now spread to a nationally observed day on the fourth Tuesday of the month of April.

South Lake Tahoe Drug Take Back Day during Earth Day on Saturday

4th annual Spring Clean

Matthew Wonnacott named Barton Health’s Doctor of the Year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hundred of staff members at Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe have selected Matthew Wonnacott as their Doctor of the Year.

Dr. Wonnacott was recently appointed to Chief Medical Officer at Barton Health. He was previously Medical Director and a family practitioner at Barton Community Health Center. Dr. Wonnacott was instrumental in bringing a new Medication-Assisted Treatment program to address substance abuse and opioid dependency in the community.

South Lake Tahoe students celebrated during World Down Syndrome Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a day of crazy socks, mismatched shoes and untied shoelaces at the Sierra House Elementary campus at Al Tahoe Learning Center Thursday in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day.

Kindergarten teacher Amy Terpening organized #RockYourSocks day in her classroom and held a surprise celebration of her student Dylan Polan who has Down Syndrome. The six-year-old came through a tunnel created by her fellow students and then sat down to be "interviewed" by her teacher. The students displayed paper socks they decorated with fun shapes and colors.

South Lake Tahoe woman honored by Daughters of the American Revolution on her new citizenship

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently gathered to honor a South Lake Tahoe woman who recently took the Oath of Citizenship in Sacramento.

Jessica Sosa Torres, a longtime resident of South Lake Tahoe and a graduate of South Tahoe High School, is now officially a citizen of the United States. Members of her family attended her Sacramento swearing-in ceremony and were present at the South Lake Tahoe DAR celebration on March 19, 2019.

Azul Latin Kitchen raises almost $17,000 for Live Violence Free in 2018

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Each year Azul Latin Kitchen selects a local nonprofit to be the recipient of their fundraising for the year. In 2018, Live Violence Free (LVF) was the recipient of that generosity and today were presented a check for $16,917.50 at a ceremony at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The popular restaurant in the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe had Tahoe Youth & Family Services as their nonprofit of choice last year and Tahoe Arts Project will get the funds in 2019.

Angel of Tahoe turns 90 -Treated to a big birthday party and fireworks

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe, celebrated a milestone birthday with 160 of her friends at Edgewood Tahoe on Wednesday.

The woman who is responsible for giving away millions of dollars to the South Lake Tahoe community was given something back, a lot of love and appreciation.

Planned by her close friend and caretaker, Ricky Reich, no detail was left undone and her favorite color pink was evident in all of the flowers and decor.

City calls second night of SnowGlobe a "success"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement and medical issues associated with the 2018 SnowGlobe Music Festival were down again on the event's second night, leading City of South Lake Tahoe staff to call the evening "another success."

After much concern from the community, staff has been working to alleviate concerns from them concerning noise and trouble for law enforcement.

Day 1 wrap up of South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 8th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe is underway, and after Day 1 city officials reports it was a "smooth start."

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) said they had no significant problems or issues of any kind on Saturday and made just one arrest between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

In comparison, there were 13 arrests on the first day of the festival in 2017.

Even outside the festival things were quiet.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office plans strong presence in Stateline on New Year's Eve

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe starting on Monday, December 31, 2018.

Due to the high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during this event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive. In past years, the road has closed anywhere from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Home Ranch for the Holidays at Dangberg Historic Park

Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual community grant EpicPromise celebration, 93 local nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.9 million in cash as well as additional in-kind product support. Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.

Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.

Santa headed to Tahoma for Saturday celebration

South Lake Tahoe Library now open six days; Celebrating with party

Santa arrives at community tree lighting at Edgewood

The inaugural Tree Lighting Celebration at Edgewood Tahoe took place on Saturday night with a packed house welcoming in the season with jolly ole' Santa Claus.

As Santa descended the grand stairs in the Lodge at Edgewood with Mrs. Santa, members of the South Tahoe Choral Association sang Christmas songs to the gathered crowd.

"For Edgewood it's about creating memories," the resort's GM Corinna Osborne said as she flipped the switch to light the tree.

Ed Laine ~ 10/17/31 - 11/8/18

Art has a way of making the creator immortal. Such is the case with Ed Laine.

The longtime South Lake Tahoe resident died Nov. 8, 2018, at home. He was 87.

Beyond a large family and rich trove of friends, Ed leaves behind a legacy as an artist. He was a quiet man who for years let his voice be heard through his work.

Born in Palo Alto on Oct. 17, 1931, to Selma Alquist and John Laine, Ed grew up in the Bay Area, having graduated from Sequoia Union High School in 1950. He attended San Jose State College, Cal Arts and the University of Oregon. In Oregon he majored in art.

Heavenly and Northstar celebrate opening day in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain kicked off it’s opening day Friday with the Gondola and Tamarack Express spinning at 9:00 a.m. Skiers and riders enjoyed their first taste of the slopes on California Trail and Tamarack Return.

There was a pre-opening celebration at the base of the Gondola in South Lake Tahoe at 8:00 a.m. Those early risers enjoy music by a DJ, fresh coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts to stay toasty. The rest of the day had live music, ski and snowboard gear giveaways, group photos and food.

Drake Niven ~ 8/2/49 - 11/7/18

Drake Niven, a long-time Lake Tahoe contractor, died on November 7 of a heart attack suffered during surgery at Carson-Tahoe Medical Center. He was 69.

He was well known in the local building community and built custom homes all around the lake. Drake was also instrumental in helping friends and neighbors re-build their homes after the Angora Fire. He just recently retired from building due to health issues.

Former City Manager Nancy Kerry honored with proclamation and party

Nancy Kerry has been gone from her position as the city manager of South Lake Tahoe since March, but she finally got the credit due for her many accomplishments and contributions during a standing room only celebration Tuesday evening.

Over 75 community leaders came together to present Nancy with a proclamation signed by both Mayor Wendy David and Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis, their last official act with the City.

The list of tributes spoken during the evening is a lengthy one.
