Lake Tahoe Search and Rescue calls on the rise
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 6:37amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the busy summer season is over, those hiking in the mountains around Lake Tahoe needing help getting to safety are on the rise.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) team has been busy this fall, responding to almost double the number of calls.
From September 1 to October 30, 2016, the SAR volunteers responded to 12 incidents. So far in 2017 during the period, they are been called out 22 times.
Couple safe after overnight rescue on Mt. Tallac
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/25/2017 - 11:03pmEl Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, with assistance from a California Highway Patrol Helicopter, made an overnight rescue of a married couple on Mt. Tallac Monday morning.
At 3:00 a.m. October 23, the Sheriff's Office received a call for rescue on the eastern slope of Mt. Tallac.
First snow of the season: Chain controls and accidents Friday morning

The road and weather report:
California Highway Patrol (CHP) is reporting an accident just east of Old Meyers Grade on Highway 50. At about 6:20 a.m., a big rig and vehicle collided, vehicle is off the road. Tow trucks are on the way and it is unknown if there are any injuries at this time.
CHP is also reporting a big rig blocking SR-89 north of Luther Pass as of 7:00 a.m.

Single vehicle rollover in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/29/2017 - 4:20pm10:00 p.m. update: One man is behind bars on suspicion of driving drunk and causing bodily injury, a felony charge.
South Lake Tahoe resident Luis Lopez-Mora, 23, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol after he was released from Barton Hospital Friday evening.
As reported earlier, a call went into law enforcement about a person driving erratically on Pioneer Trail. Shortly after that call, the truck Lopez-Mora was driving failed to safely navigate a curve and his truck left the pavement and rolled down an embankment, landing on its wheels.
South Lake Tahoe motorcyclist identified in fatal Hope Valley crash

Charleen R. Blackburn, 64, was riding her Harley Davidson westbound on SR-88 and slowing at the junction with SR-89 at 4:48 p.m. on September 17. She was making a left turn onto southbound SR-89. At the same time, a 58-year-old woman from Gardnerville, Nevada was traveling eastbound on SR-88 in her Buick La Sabre, and approaching the same intersection at approximately 50-55 mph.
South Lake Tahoe woman dies in motorcycle crash
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/19/2017 - 10:09amAn afternoon motorcycle ride through Hope Valley turned fatal for a 64-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman on Sunday, September 17.
At approximately 4:48 p.m., the unidentified woman was riding her Harley Davidson westbound on SR-88 and slowing at the junction with SR-89. She was making a left turn onto southbound SR-89. At the same time, a 58-year-old woman from Gardnerville, Nevada was traveling eastbound on SR-88 in her Buick La Sabre. She was approaching the same intersection at approximately 50-55 mph.

At 1:40 p.m., 58-year-old Larry D. Ferguson was riding east on McKinney Rubicon Springs Road in Tahoma when he was struck by a gray mid-sized SUV traveling west as he made a turn onto Bellevue Avenue.

Two women thankful after being rescued from side of mountain
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/15/2017 - 4:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three friends from the Sacramento area spent Sunday morning hiking in Desolation Wilderness along the Lyons Creek Trail with a goal of getting to Lake Sylvia, then Pyramid Peak.
They got to Lake Sylvia along a well marked trail, but were getting tired and decided to look for a shortcut to Pyramid Peak.
"We were going to hike the ridge and do a gradual decent," said one of the hikers, Sarah Pollo, 33. "We were pretty tired and looked for a short cut."
"It seemed like a good idea at the time," she said. "But it was a miscalculation."
Three-car crash near Sierra sends two to hospital

Head on collision on Black Bart Ave in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/14/2017 - 10:20pmThree people were`sent to the hospital Thursday afternoon after two cars collided on Black Bart Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.
Just after 4:00 p.m., the driver of one of the cars involved apparently fell asleep at the wheel, drifted over the yellow line into the path of a second car according to Ruth Loehr of the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Loehr said both drivers were transferred to the hospital as well as one passenger.
CHP, El Dorado County Sheriff's officers, Lake Valley Fire and paramedics responded to the crash which closed a section of the road for almost an hour.
DUI Checkpoint somewhere on the South Shore Saturday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/13/2017 - 4:51pmAnother reminder to not drink and drive in South Lake Tahoe will be on Saturday, July 15 when the the California Highway Patrol (CHP) conducts a sobriety checkpoint.
CHP has said they will be operating the checkpoint between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. "somewhere in the east area of El Dorado County." This could be Meyers, South Lake Tahoe or Tahoma.
Hundreds join in search for missing 5-year-old; Found safe after night in the woods
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/03/2017 - 10:22pmA 5-year-old boy was found safe and in good spirits Sunday morning after spending the night alone in El Dorado County.
On Saturday, two boys, ages 4 and 5 were camping and riding quads with their father when the dad's motorcycle broke down. The kids did not notice dad was no longer with them.
The 4-year-old was located immediately but the search for the older boy went into the night. Over 100 volunteers from 16 counties joined in the search on off-road highway vehicles, air support, K9 Teams and ground searchers and worked all night to locate the child.

Three fires burning south of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/06/2017 - 3:36pm9:30 p.m. update - Highway 395 has reopened in both directions after firefighters got the upper hand on the Topaz Fire which burned 8 acres between Topaz Lake and the highway near Topaz Lodge. One outbuilding burned. 4 engines will remain on the fire overnight. No containment has been listed at this time. Jurisdiction is East Fork Fire Protection District.
Teen who died near Vikingsholm identified
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/01/2017 - 4:50pmA 14-year-old from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota has been identified as the victim in Wednesday's fall at Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe.
Chloe Conn fell approximately 50-feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm Trail at about noon on May 31.
No other details about the fall, or who Conn was with in Lake Tahoe have been released by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).
Teen dies after fall at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/31/2017 - 5:09pmA 14-year-old female died on Wednesday, May 31 after she fell approximately 50 feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm trail at Emerald Bay.
Just after noon, On May 31, 2017, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received the call and responded along with CHP, Cal-Star, CA State Parks, Lake Valley Fire and South Tahoe EMS personnel. An off-duty law enforcement officer who was recreating in the area began CPR on the victim prior to the arrival of on-duty first responders.
Four car collision on SR89 sends three to hospital
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/16/2017 - 6:35pmThree people were injured after a head-on collision on State Route 89 near Cascade Estates on Saturday, May 13.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Subaru WRX was being driven northbound on SR-89 near Cascade when the car overheated. The driver pulled to the right shoulder and called his father for assistance. The dad arrived in his Volkswagon Touareg and he parked on the right shoulder behind his son’s WRX, out of the traffic lanes with its hazard lights on.
Caltrans pulls tree over to get traffic moving again on SR-89

State Route 89 around Emerald Bay is currently closed after a tree fell onto the road way about one-half mile south of Eagle Falls overlooking Vikingsholm.
Caltrans and the CHP have closed the road to clear the tree which fell at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday, April 24.
Highway 50 over Echo Summit reopens after snow slide
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/16/2017 - 11:06amA snow slide about 4-5 feet deep and over 30 feet wide went over Highway 50 at Echo Summit, closing the road for over an hour as crews cleaned it up.
At 10:15 a.m. this morning, the slide was reported, at at noon the road at the summit has reopened. Several cars had to be turned around so they could return to Meyers as crews made their way to clear the snow.

Injured backcountry skier rescued from Lake Tahoe's Jake's Peak
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/31/2017 - 2:52pmSearch and Rescue volunteers were dropped off on Jake's Peak Thursday to help an injured backcountry skier get off the mountain which is located inside Desolation Wilderness at Lake Tahoe.
At 2:30 p.m. on March 30, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a call about the injured skier, a 24-year-old man from San Luis Obispo who was in the area on Spring Break. He had been skiing near Jake's Peak when he suffered a lower leg injury and couldn't get out on his own.

Sacramento area carjacking suspect causes Hwy 50 closure near Silver Fork

According to CHP in Placerville, a man driving eastbound on Highway 50 east of Ice House Road noticed a car on the right shoulder of the road with a flat tire. As he passed the person in the stopped car they threw an unidentified object at his vehicle. ,

Don't hit that city in the morning and late afternoon. Mad dash to Santa Cruz on a warm Saturday? Leave early in the morning or go the night before to miss the backup of traffic.
Smooth travel over Highway 50 in the Sierra requires the same planning or one will get stuck in heavy traffic on Friday evenings heading to Lake Tahoe, or Sunday mornings leaving Lake Tahoe (or the day after a holiday).

Last week, on March 5, there were reports of travel time on the 9.3 mile route along Highway 50 from Stateline to Meyers taking eight hours, and from the Y to Meyers, four hours for the 4.3 mile trip.
Snowboarder spends cold night lost in mountains after going out-of-bounds at Heavenly
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/22/2017 - 6:02pmA 32-year-old man is lucky to be alive today after spending the night lost in the mountains of South Lake Tahoe after snowboarding out-of-bounds at Heavenly Mountain Resort.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) team was notified at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday that the man, identified only as "Aarin," was disoriented and lost. Aarin was able to call Heavenly Valley Ski Patrol to tell them he was in deep snow and having trouble navigating.
I80 closure bringing big rigs through South Lake Tahoe

Since I80 has been closed this afternoon due to poor traction and whiteout conditions, many trucks are heading to US50 over Echo Summit in order to take their loads west.
Current road conditions:
SR88 from Red Lake to Martin Meadown, including the Carson Pass, is closed.
Highway 50 westbound lane deteriorating near Bridal Veil Falls
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/21/2017 - 9:33am11:00 a.m. update: The slope supporting the highway at Bridal Veil Falls, two miles east of Fresh Pond, slipped several feet last week, requiring the closure of the westbound #2 lane. The damage has increased this week, impacting the #1 lane.
This section of the highway will be under one-way reversing traffic controls Tuesday as contractor Doug Veerkamp Engineering, Inc. sets up k-rail for the work site, and it will be reduced to one lane in each direction for the next few months as repair work is performed to stabilize the slope.

Tuesday morning look at Lake Tahoe area roads and weather
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/21/2017 - 8:42amIt was very windy overnight in South Lake Tahoe with the highest gust of 56 mph recorded at the Lake Tahoe Airport at 1:03 a.m. Tuesday morning. From 7:00 p.m. Monday to 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, winds have stayed in the 30-50 mph range. According to the forecast, winds will 25 mph during the day with gusts as high as 45 mph Tuesday, breezy over night with winds 15-20 mph and gusts to 30 mph.
Alpine Meadows (recorded at 8643 feet) experienced high winds all night with winds at 11:00 p.m. Monday recorded at 144 mph along with gusts of 199 mph.
Road closures and chain controls in place as heavy snow hits South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/20/2017 - 11:51am3:40 p.m. update: It is taking three hours from the Y to Meyers, so if you're on the road you may want to consider going inside for the rest of the day. The snow is not letting up and there is a lot more to come.
Traffic heading west from South Lake Tahoe is still slow going, and there have been several weather and traffic relate incidents on US50 west of Lake Tahoe. At this time, emergency vehicles are at the scene of a three-car accident near Kyburz. The road has reopened but may need to close again to remove one of the cars.
Serious crash near Kirkwood injures multiple people
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/14/2017 - 2:41pm5:00 p.m. update: Seven people were injured and transported to area hospitals Tuesday after a four-car crash in the "Ice Box" area on Highway 88.
Just after 1:00 p.m., a Toyota Highlander with three adults and three children inside was traveling westbound and, for reasons unknown at this time, went into a snowbank. A car following the Toyota then slammed into it.
A third car, a small, brand new Chevrolet, avoided the other two cars as they came upon the crash, but then ended up in a snowbank as well. The fourth car involved then ran into the Chevrolet.
Rocks and mud still cover US50 in Nevada and California; Other routes to Lake Tahoe open
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/13/2017 - 7:36pmRoadwork to clear mud and rocks from Highway 50 continues on both sides of the state line of Lake Tahoe with no estimated reopening time released by either transportation agency.
Last week, five boulders fell onto the highway near Logan Creek on the east side of the lake, prompting Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to close the road due to an unstable hillside. Progress is being made on the stretch of road that connects South Lake Tahoe to Carson City according to Meg Ragonese of NDOT. She said the "monolithic-size boulders" are being removed.
Weekend traffic congestion in Meyers to be discussed at Monday meeting

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel is inviting all county residents to join in a discussion about the traffic congestion in Meyers every weekend and holiday, hampering locals in their movement along surface roads and the highway.
As visitors depart South Lake Tahoe, many have become aware of side streets via google and phone apps, thus finding another route that they think is getting them around the backup.
Man killed in North Lake Tahoe officer-involved shooting identified

Lera took a female hostage at gunpoint and was eventually shot and killed by Placer County Sheriff's deputies early Friday morning.

Officer involved shooting closes SR89 near Squaw Valley/Alpine
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/03/2017 - 7:28amThe Placer County Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 3:00 a.m. Friday near North Lake Tahoe.
At around 1:40 a.m., deputies and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers attempted to pull over a suspected DUI driver, who was driving dangerously and erratically on Highway 28. The pursuit was terminated a few minutes later.
At 2:45 a.m., a deputy saw the car on Highway 28, near Dollar Hill, again driving erratically, and attempted to pull him over. The male driver failed to yield, and a pursuit began.
Fatal crash south of Lake Tahoe claims life of Carson City man

The unidentified man was driving a Ford F150 northbound at about 4:29 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, drifted to the right. A witness told the California Highway Patrol (CHP) that the driver then overcorrected and went into oncoming traffic.
CHP helicopter pulls out injured backcountry skier from Donner Lake area
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/29/2017 - 5:21pmA California Highway Patrol helicopter was called out to help with an injured skier who in the backcountry with three friends between Donner Lake and Boreal Ski Resort on Friday.
The victim said he and three other skiers had started their day at the Donner Pass Rest Area, hiked up the mountain for some backcountry skiing and then injured his lower leg while skiing down a shoot between two cliffs. The group used a cell phone and called 9-1-1 to request help. They were found near Flora Lake at approximately 7,500 feet in elevation.
CHP officer finds herself inches away from accident after work
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/25/2017 - 10:41amAs California Highway Patrol Officer Ruth Loehr headed home after working in Meyers Tuesday night, little did she know she was about to have a close call in the type of accident she normally responds to.
On January 24 at 5:30 p.m., Loehr was driving southbound on SR-89 just cresting the hill near Grass Lake on Luther Pass and was behind a truck tractor & trailer combination ("Big Rig"). Both Loehr and the truck driver passed a Toyota FJ Cruiser that was heading north when, for unknown reasons, it hit the snow berm. The Toyota rolled onto its side, just missing Loehr's vehicle by inches.

Avalanche on SR89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/23/2017 - 9:24am1:00 p.m. update - SR-89 is back open to traffic after the snow from an early morning avalanche was cleared off the road.

State Route 89 remains closed Monday morning after an overnight avalanche between Alpine Meadows and Tahoe City caught two cars in its path.
Drivers in the cars were rescued in about 45 minutes and there were no injuries. Two of the occupants of the cars, Tahoe City area residents, posted a photo from inside their trapped car on social media.
