The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and the South Tahoe Refuse Company team up this holiday season to make giving to Christmas Cheer easier than ever. The LTVA’s Drive and Drop for Christmas Cheer takes place Monday, December 8 through Saturday, December 13, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Drive through the Visitor Center parking lot at 3066 Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe, and drop your donations of food or toys into the bins provided by South Tahoe Refuse.

Dream Spirit to make Music at SLT Library

The Friends of the Library are excited to present Dream Spirit Baroque Band on December 13 at 11 a.m. Enjoy a morning of festive music featuring traditional Christmas tunes, and popular classics. This performance at the South Lake Tahoe Library is the perfect way to get into the spirit of the season. Refreshments will be served.

The event is free but we would love for you to bring non-perishable food items for donation to Christmas Cheer.

Christmas Cheer's food pantry pilfered by bears

Bears apparently found the food pantry at Christmas Cheer All Year too good to pass up on Monday night. Board Member Tom Davis reported that bears broke into the food pantry and helped themselves to the food used to feed those community members in need.

Christmas Cheer All Year is asking for the community’s support with food and monetary donations as they begin to restock their shelves.

Annual Holiday Parade

Would you like to take part in the 3rd Annual Holiday Parade in South Lake Tahoe? Entries are now being accepted for this fun event which will take place on Saturday, December 13 at 3 p.m.

The parade route will begin at Ski Run Blvd and make it's way down Highway 50 to the Y.

All profits will go to the local food pantry, Christmas Cheer, who feeds approximately 1,000 families a month.

Families and businesses are welcome to participate for a fee of $50 per entry. Scout and school groups can participate for free though registration is still required.

Hard Rock Casino gives back to the South Lake Tahoe community

Months before they are scheduled to open, the Hard Rock Casino of South Lake Tahoe donated goods and materials from the former Horizon property to several local charities.

The company has a history of local philanthropy, and South Lake Tahoe will be no different.

Chili Cookoff and Fall Festival held Satuday

The 3rd Annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off is at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center Saturday, September 13 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

There will be live entertainment, a cake walk, raffles, vendors and a chili tastings as well as events for the whole family. Admission to the event is free. More information can be found on the website at www.goldenbearevents.com.

Local non-profits will benefit from the event. The South Tahoe Cancer League, Lion's Club, American Legion Post 795, Christmas Cheer and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society are among the recipients.

Lake Tahoe ALS and local charity ice bucket challenge in the lake on Sunday

Many people living in areas affected by the drought are feeling guilty about participating in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, so organizers in South Lake Tahoe have given it a new twist.

On Sunday, August 31 at Lakeview Commons, there will be a community wide bucket challenge to raise money for both ALS and local charities. They are asking people to bring their own 5 gallon bucket and $10. At 3 p.m. participants will stand in the water at Lakeview Commons and fill their buckets up with water and have some fun.

There are a few buzz words that are evidently going to be used during the El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor race this summer and fall.

Economic Vitality - An economy with sufficient jobs, products and services to support the community. A sufficient tax base provides citizens with police and fire, parks and recreation and public services needed by the population.

Garden Tour at South Lake Tahoe home on Saturday

The South Lake Tahoe garden of John and Cathy Hindmarsh will be on display Saturday, July 26.

The showing of the garden is hosted by Aspen Hollow Nursery at the Hindmarsh home located at 642 Tehama Drive. Stop by between 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.. Refreshments will be provided and donations to Christmas Cheer are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.

This July featured garden is the first installment of the "South of
South Shore" 2014 open garden tour. The garden was designed and constructed by John Fellows of Aspen Hollow.

Date and Location Change for El Dorado County District 5 Candidates Forum

A candidates forum for the El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor race will be held on July 29th at 6:30 p.m. at the California Conservation Corps (CCC) Tahoe Center building in Meyers.

The forum was rescheduled from it's original date of July 22.

TahoeChamber, Tahoe Daily Tribune and Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will host the forum in anticipation of the November election in which two candidates, Kenny Curtzwiler and Sue Novasel, will campaign for the position to be vacated by current Supervisor Norma Santiago.

Blue Shield of El Dorado Hills “Day of Giving” at the Food Bank of El Dorado County

Blue Shield of El Dorado Hills’ IT Shared Services division offered its community “Day of Giving” services to benefit the Food Bank of El Dorado County. About 50 volunteers arrived at the Food Bank warehouse Tuesday to sort and bag food for three hours, racking up more than 130 hours in volunteer services. In the days leading up to their “Day of Giving”, Blue Shield employees hosted a department wide food drive bringing in 230 pounds of food for El Dorado County’s at-risk population.

South Lake Tahoe Hunger Issues Addressed in Meeting and Food Distribution

The Food Bank of El Dorado County was in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday to accomplish two things: Distribute emergency food supplies to locals in need, and to hold a meeting with South Lake Tahoe agencies who assist people living with hunger.

In 2013, the El Dorado County Food Bank distributed 1.8 million pounds of food to county residents with a value of $3,000,000. The agency is not county funded and gets their food from donations, private donors, growers, businesses and the USDA.

Community Kudos: Money Raised at Mixer Distributed to Two Charities

Polar Bear Plunge into Lake Tahoe for Christmas Cheer

Opinion: Alone We Can Do So Little; Together We Can Do So Much

Helen Keller wrote those words many years ago yet they continue to be very relevant today. As I look forward to 2014 I also like to reflect on another one of my favorite quotes, this one from Ghandi, "you must be the change you wish to see in the world."

As a community that is in the midst of change, we can be reminded of these quotes as we move forward and live in a town we're both proud of, and a vibrant part of.

A Time of Giving: STAR Spreads Good Cheer

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) has spent the last several months spreading good cheer to local non-profits. They gave Christmas Cheer All Year $5,000 prior to the holidays and have now given both Tahoe Youth and Family Services and Live Violence Free $5,000.

South Lake Tahoe residents in need will be the beneficiaries of the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority Drive By Food & Toy Drive being held this week.

Bins for Christmas Cheer will be available in front of the LTVA California location at 3066 Highway 50 across from Rojo's and Snowflake Drive-In through December 14 from 9 am to 5 pm.

Christmas Cheer feeds over 400 families regularly, all year long, and the need for wholesome meals is even more important to those with children who are out of school at the holidays. For more information call 530-541-5255

Santa Run in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday to Raise Funds for Local Charities

The 2nd Annual Santa Run will be bringing out runners in all of their holiday costume as they run from Blue Angel Cafe on Ski Run, up the hill to the end at Himmel Haus. It will be held on Sunday, December 1 at 4:30 pm.

You'll see Santas, elves, presents and whatever other costumes the runners can come up with as they run the mile long course. At the end of the run there will be door prizes, a buffet and prizes awarded to the top three finishers in costume and best costume.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

23rd Annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run to Benefit Christmas Cheer

This event, spearheaded by a group of local motorcycle enthusiasts, is one of the largest fund raisers for Christmas Cheer in South Lake Tahoe. Christmas Cheer is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing food to needy family's year around, and Christmas toys to underprivileged children in our community. With record numbers of people in need in our community, we would appreciate any and all donations for prizes to be raffled at our Toy Run. South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts keeps Christmas Cheer doors open with $5k donation

Christmas Cheer, one of South Lake Tahoe’s local food banks, could not open its doors on some Sundays this fall from lack of available funds and contributions. The 22nd annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run is Oct. 6. All proceeds benefit Christmas Cheer. Line up at Horizon casino in Stateline at 10am Saturday, October 6th and departure at noon to Brother’s Bar & Grill at 888 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe. Entry fee is one new toy.
