Tahoe STEM Academy - A mobile learning lab for kids ages 10-16

Tahoe STEM Academy provides hands-on science and engineering curriculum right to your door. Owner David Wise has outfitted a trailer as a mobile science learning lab and has been offering electronics, robotics, and other engineering curricula to kids ages 10-16.

The setup includes propane heaters and mobile workbenches for students learn outside, socially-distanced with masks for groups of up to six kids.

The mission of the Tahoe STEM Academy is to excite kids about the magic of science of engineering and instill a lifelong love of learning.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - The 24th annual Lake Tahoe Summit has moved to a virtual format this year. U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada will be hosting the event that will feature Olympian David Wise as the keynote speaker.

Since the first Lake Tahoe Summit in 1997, the area’s congressional representatives have pledged to keep working together and with local, state, and private sector partners to restore Tahoe’s environment, improve forest health, and confront climate change.

Lauri Kemper selected to fill vacant seat on Lake Tahoe Unified School Board of Trustees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a 3-1 vote the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees voted to bring retired engineer Lauri Kemper on board to fill Barbara Bannar's term.

Bannar resigned in March and her term ends December 2022.

Originally there were three candidates but one dropped out of the running, Chris Proctor, leaving Kemper and David Wise. Interviews took place during the Tuesday LTUSD Board meeting on ZOOM, each candidate having two minutes to answer each of the board's ten questions.

School board meeting Tuesday to select new member, discuss budget and graduation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District will be holding a regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:00 p.m., followed by closed session.

The meeting can be viewed on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHZeyuZYC9ZXKyTO2k-sJ5Q, and public comment can be made in three ways (see at the end of the story).

A provisional board member will be selected Tuesday night. Three people have applied to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Barbara Bannar. Vying to fill out her term are Chris Proctor, David Wise, and Lauri Kemper.

Jamie Anderson has big fall at X Games, grabs bronze in Big Air

Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe and one of the most successful female snowboarders won her 16th X Games medal, winning the bronze on Thursday in Women's Snowboard Big Air.

Jamie took a hard fall during one run, landing on her face and leaving her with bruises that were visible when interviewed on television Friday. Half of her female competitors in Big Air didn't finish after they too crashed.

Lake Tahoe athletes on U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The United States Ski and Snowboard teams have been announced for this season and several local faces once again, including South Lake Tahoe Olympians Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson, are on that list.

Maddie Bowman, a South Tahoe High grad, has won an Olympic gold medal and seven X Games medals. She burst onto the ski halfpipe scene in 2012, and into the history books two years later by winning the first Olympic gold medal in women’s halfpipe skiing. She has now been on the Pro Halfpipe-Freeskiing team for seven years.

Jamie Anderson nominated for 7th ESPY award; Public invited to vote

Olympic Gold Medalist Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe has been nominated for two more ESPY awards in a year dominated by snowboarders, at least in the Olympic and action sport categories. She is up against fellow Olympian Chloe Kim for Best Female Action Sports Athlete, an award Anderson won in 2012, 2014 and 2016, and nominated for in 2007.

Anderson is also nominated for Best U.S. Female Olympian, an award she previously won in 2014. She is up against Kim for this award as well.

ESPY stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly.

Olympian David Wise joins in on inaugural Gift of Literacy event in South Lake Tahoe

"Choose joy, even in hard times," two-time Olympic gold medal winner David Wise told students form the Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School on May 25.

Wise had just shared his children's book "Very Bear and The Butterfly" with kindergarten and first grade students from the school who were on the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) campus for a day of literacy.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The U.S. Olympic Committee is recognizing the success of Jamie Anderson of the South Shore and David Wise of Reno Reno in the Olympics by naming them finalists for the Female and Male Olympic athlete of the Games. This year's Team USA Awards, Best of the Games are presented by Dow. Winners will be determined by online votes over the next 18 days, until March 11.

Gold medalists Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson are representing the South Shore once again on the global stage as they head to the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang February 9-25.

Kyle Smaine of South Lake Tahoe wins halfpipe at Mammoth

Kyle Smaine of South Lake Tahoe was the surprise winner of the final selection event for the U.S. freeski halfpipe Olympic team at Mammoth Friday, but will it be enough to earn him a discretionary selection?

The 26-year-old Sierra-at-Tahoe skier has a chance.

The U.S. freeski team added four more athletes to its halfpipe roster for PyeongChang on Friday night.

Alex Ferreira and Torin Yater-Wallace are joining David Wise on the men's team, while Brita Sigourney and Devin Logan are joining South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman on the women's team.

Last weekend for snowboarders and skiers to qualify for 2018 Winter Olympics

Just one more week of ski and snowboard competition until the 2018 U.S. Olympic teams are closer to being finalized. Focus will be south of Tahoe this week for the U.S. Grand Prix Series at Mammoth Mountain.

The results will help determine who the U.S. sends to next month's Winter Olympics in these disciplines.

Maddie Bowman heading to her second straight Olympics

South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman is headed to her second straight Olympics!

She, along with Reno's David Wise, won gold in the first halfpipe for skiers held in the Olympic, and now they're both the first U.S. halfpipe skiers to qualify for February's Olympics in PyeongChang.

Even though Maddie finished in fourth place Friday, she clinched and punched her ticket to South Korea during the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix in Snowmass because she had two podium finishes during the previous three qualifying events.

Ski movie to be premiered in South Lake Tahoe at Basecamp Hotel

Here and Now, a movie that showcases the skiing of Eric Hjorleifson, David Wise, Wiley Miller, Thayne Rich and Cam Riley, will be showcased in two stops in the Lake Tahoe area, the first of which is the premier on November 19 in South Lake Tahoe. The second showing will be at Diamond Peak in Incline Village on December 16.

Local Freshies, in association with 4Frnt Skis, hosts the two movie showings. Besides Here and Now, Tahoe: The Daily Routine, a movie about businesses that give Lake Tahoe its flavor and "show its culture is alive and well," according to event promoters.

Lake Tahoe Olympians to be honored at Gold Medal Gala

Its been 50 years since the first gold medal in skiing and snowboarding was won by an American. Since Gretchen Fraser’s historic slalom gold at St. Moritz in 1948, 31 athletes from the U.S. have brought home 35 gold medals.

In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe each won gold, Bowman in women’s halfpipe skiing and Anderson in women’s slopestyle snowboarding.

Olympic and X-Games medalists Jamie Anderson and Maddie Bowman, both from the Meyers/South Lake Tahoe area, have received nominations to their sports' 2016-2017 teams.

Maddie Bowman wins gold; Jamie Anderson silver in XGames

All three runs for South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman in the Women's Ski SuperPipe X Games today beat all competitors on the course, earning her a fourth straight gold medal in the event. The 22-year-old Olympic gold medalist has also won a silver and bronze in the X Games.

Bowman scored a 85.33 on her first run Friday, followed by a 87.33 and 89.00. Second place finisher Ayana Onozuka of Japan ended up with a high run of 85.00. Bronze medalist Annalisa Drew of the USA had an 83.00.

South Tahoe High graduate, and Olympic champion, Maddie Bowman was named to the 2016 U.S. Freeskiing halfpipe team on Thursday. She leads the women's team that also includes Annalisa Drew from Andover, Maine, Devin Logan from Dover, Vermont and Brita Sigourney from Carmel, Calif.

Updated Lake Tahoe Olympic Medal Count

The medals won by Lake Tahoe athletes grew by one on Thursday, bringing the total to 4. The three gold medals were won by Maddie Bowman, Jamie Anderson and David Wise. Julia Mancuso won bronze.

There are three days left of competition in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. The closing ceremonies will air on NBC Sunday night from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm.

Olympians from Lake Tahoe Have Higher Medal Count Than Some Countries

The gold medals won by Jamie Anderson and David Wise, along with the bronze won by Julia Mancuso have put the Lake Tahoe medal count above those won by Great Britain and Finland, and the same as Australia and Latvia.

Lake Tahoe's medal count can still increase with Maddie Bowman's Freeskiing Halfpipe coming up on Thursday, and the men's Giant Slalom and Slalom on Wednesday and Saturday where Tim Jitloff will try to medal as well.

Reno's David Wise Wins Gold in the Sochi: Skis out of Northstar in Lake Tahoe

David Wise of Reno, Nevada won gold today in the first ever Olympic Men's Freeskiing Halfpipe in Sochi. The Wooster High Grad topped competitors with a first run of 92 and hit the deck and didn't finish his second run.

The 23 year old Wise calls Northstar of Lake Tahoe his home resort. He won the gold medal in the X Games the last three years.

South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman Prepares for Her Olympic Debut

South Lake Tahoe native Maddie Bowman is preparing for her debut at the 2014 Winter Olympics on Thursday, February 20. Maddie will be part of the inaugural Olympic Freeskiing Halfpipe event. Qualification rounds are Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Sochi time (6:30 a.m. Tahoe time) with the finals at 9:30 p.m. Sochi time (9:30 a.m. Tahoe time).

South Lake Tahoe's Maddy Bowman and Squaw Valley's Nate Holland Take Gold in X Games

Less than two weeks before heading to Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Olympian Maddie Bowman from South Lake Tahoe won the Halfpipe Skiing Gold medal at the X Games in Aspen on Friday. Olympian Nate Holland from Squaw Valley took snowboardcross gold and David Wise from Reno won gold in the halfpipe skiing.

2014 Olympic Halfpipe and Slopestyle Team Nominations Announced

USSA - Five additional freeskiing athletes were nominated by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to be a part of the Olympic debut of halfpipe and slopestyle skiing. In addition, skicross athlete John Teller (Mammoth Lakes, CA) was nominated to the team, following his win in the final Olympic qualifying World Cup last week. With the confirmation of quotas within freestyle skiing, the USSA added two skiers in halfpipe and three in slopestyle to round out the full team.
