South Lake Tahoe rally held to support local law enforcement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost 200 people showed up Saturday to display their support of South Lake Tahoe law enforcement during a rally on a national day to "Bridge the Blue."

The supporters gathered at the entrance to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) and South Lake Tahoe Police buildings before many of them joined a walk down Johnson Boulevard to US50 over to Lakeview Commons and down Al Tahoe, then back to the beginning.

Sample the Sierra moves to digital format for 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular farm-to-fork festival, Sample the Sierra, is moving to a digital format this year due to the current pandemic.

The 11st annual event will still include a variety of food-related entertainment typically found at Sample the Sierra, including cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, musical performances, giveaways, and shopping. Instead of only having these things during the day of the traditional in-person event, this year's will be spread out throughout August and September (a more detailed schedule is coming later).

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride and Tour de Tahoe postponed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The organizer of the 29th annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride and the 18th Tour De Tahoe has announced the 2020 events will not happen. Bike the West tried to merge the two popular rides after the America's Most Beautiful was postponed earlier this year. They were to take place on September 13 but current COVID-19 restrictions and setbacks with reopening phases governed by local, county and state health agencies have led them to postpone and move to 2021.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials have announced 18 new cases of COVID-19 in the county, with nine in the Lake Tahoe region, four in El Dorado Hills, three in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue and two in Placerville.

Of the new cases, two are under the age of 18, 15 are in the 18-49-year-old group, and one is aged 50-64, ten are male, and eight female. To date, 381 residents have tested positive for the coronavirus..

There have been eight new recoveries, leaving 171 estimated recoveries.

Testing sites were able to conduct 300 new tests.

Originally scheduled to begin on June 25, 2020, the music series is now on hold until the summer of 2021.

There is only one other neighborhood, Golden Bear (Lower Montgomery Estates), that is under the Firewise USA® program in the Lake Tahoe Basin though several areas outside the basin in El Dorado and Placer counties are participating.

Mardy Fish carries Saturday momentum into final round at Edgewood for the Win

Springboarding off a course-record 63 during day two on Saturday, former American professional tennis star Mardy Fish captured victory in the 31st American Century Championship tournament victory Sunday afternoon at Edgewood Tahoe South Golf Course.

This year’s event is being played without fans at the Edgewood Course due to the coronavirus pandemic, creating a unique experience for players in the popular celebrity tournament that typically attracts large galleries.

Fish a splash at American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Mardy Fish won the 31st American Century Championship (ACC) at Edgewood Tahoe on Sunday with a three-round total of 76 in the Stableford scoring system used at the popular celebrity golf tournament.

Fish followed up his record round on Saturday with a rather ordinary 21-point effort Sunday, but it was enough to claim his first title at Tahoe. He's had five top-five finishes at Edgewood in six previous appearances in the ACC.

Genoa's famous and historic Candy Dance canceled for 2020

GENOA, Nev. - For the past 100 years, the Town of Genoa has held a Candy Dance but the 101st event is being canceled due to COVID-19. In a 5-0 vote Wednesday, the Genoa Town Advisory Board decided to forego the event due to health and safety concerns for residents, vendors, staff and sponsors.

Boaters asked to "Party Smartly" at American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The 31st annual American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe next week will still bring over 70 celebrities to the greens of Edgewood Tahoe, but this year spectators will be absent from both the beach and the course.

The tournament will be held July 8-12 and Patrick Mahomes, Tony Romo, Jerry Rice, Steph Curry and his dad Dell Curry, and a host of others from the entertainment, sports, and broadcasting fields will be in Lake Tahoe for the annual event.

Workout With Law Enforcement Day for Douglas County Special Olympics

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) hosted a “Workout with Law Enforcement” day at Lampe Park in Gardnerville for Special Olympics Athletes, an event that concluded the ‘DCSO Special Olympics Fitness Challenge’.

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office worked-out alongside the athletes, cheering each other on, just as they do at the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run event.

COVID-19 cases for Lake Tahoe area; Barton Hospital bed and ventilator update

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials announced six new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, five in the Lake Tahoe region, and one in the Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue area. Of the new numbers, two are male, four female, four in the 18-48 age group and two in the 50-64 age group.

No new recoveries have been reported, with that number remaining at 122. At this time there are 62 active cases of COVID-19. One positive person remains hospitalized in the ICU with one suspected case in the ICU.

182 additional people were tested for the coronavirus.

46th annual Ponderosa Ridge Run on 4th of July

Austin Angell’s 46th annual Ponderosa Ridge Run will be held Saturday, July 4, 2020, at 10:00 a.m.

The popular event will start at the Spooner Summit Maintenance Station located near the intersection of US50/SR28 on the east side of the summit. The 9.5-mile hilly course is on a non-paved fire road featuring a 2,000-foot elevation gain in the first four miles with scenic views along the Tahoe Rim Trail, and a downhill finish near the end of North Benjamin off Kingsbury Grade (SR207).

Transportation is not provided back to the start area.

City of South Lake Tahoe starts recruiting process for new police chief

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Former Police Chief Brian Uhler has been gone from the post in South Lake Tahoe since March, and since then the department's two lieutenants Dave Stevenson and Shannon Laney have been sharing the duties.

The City has now started the recruitment process for a new police chief.

“Public safety is a top priority in the City of South Lake Tahoe,” said City Manager Joe Irvin. “We want to make sure we hire the most qualified person who embodies the spirit of our City too.”

Multiple agencies working on fire east of Lake Tahoe in Douglas County

Update 6/25 at 9:00 a.m.: The Monarch Fire burning in Douglas County is now 1,794 acres. The fire is burning three miles south of Sierra Spirit Ranch in the Fish Springs/ Pinenut Creek Road area.

3:51 p.m. 6/24 update: From Douglas County: Several agencies including Bureau of Land Management, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, East Fork Fire, the US Forest Service and the Nevada Division of Forestry are currently responding to the Monarch Fire, a Brush fire in the Fish Springs Pinenut Creek Rd area. No structures are threatened at this time. No active road closures at this time.

5.8 magnitude earthquake near Lone Pine felt in South Lake Tahoe

Did you feel it? There was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake near Lone Pine and Owen's Lake at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday with reports of it being felt in South Lake Tahoe. It was followed by 3.7, 3.6 and 4.7 aftershocks in the first 19 minutes after the main event.

There has been a lot of seismic activity from south of Topaz Lake and the Mammoth Lake area south to Tonopah over the last several weeks.

Sierra State Parks opens Environmental Awareness Art Exhibit

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – The Sierra State Parks Foundation hosted a virtual art contest for the 50th Earth Day celebration this past April as a way to bring the community together during this period of social isolation. It was met with an enthusiastic response, receiving 65 submissions from all ages. The theme of the art was "What Does Earth Day Mean to you."

Barton Foundation to give away $100,000 in local grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Barton Foundation began accepting applications on June 15 from local nonprofit organizations for this year’s $100,000 Community Health Grant program. Area service groups and organizations that share Barton Health’s commitment to improving community health and well-being are encouraged to apply online at bartonhealth.org/foundation.

A look at the South Lake Tahoe Police Department

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement has come a long way in South Lake Tahoe since the first police department started on July 1, 1967. At that time there were 30 sworn male officers who were chosen from a list of more than 400 applicants who wanted to be part of the first police department for the new city. They were tested in Seal Beach, Roseville, and South Lake Tahoe then interviewed in Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Combat Hero Bike Build to honor South Lake Tahoe veteran

Richard "Jay" Thoma of South Lake Tahoe will be presented a custom bike in Carson City on Saturday as part of the Combat Hero Bike Build giveaway.

Thoma, who has lived on the South Shore since 1989, lost his leg in an accident on an aircraft carrier in the Philippines in 1973 at the age of 18. Since then he has been walking with a prosthetic leg but never gave up the love of riding motorcycles.

American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe returns in July, but without fans

20th anniversary of Snapshot Day at Lake Tahoe

Friday evening brought thunderclaps and patchy showers to Lake Tahoe, adding to the flow of streams and rivers the following day as 40 participants collected water quality samples across Tahoe’s South Shore as part of Snapshot Day. This citizen science water quality monitoring event takes place every May and provides a moment-in-time look at the water quality and environmental health of the Tahoe-Truckee watershed.

Peaceful candlelight vigil held in South Lake Tahoe

When parents go to their LTUSD school’s designated Materials Collection Date on June 9 or June 10, one new book will be gifted to each child along with a free puppet.

Parents of first graders at Zephyr Cove Elementary will be contacted prior to the last day of school with additional details for book and puppet pickup.
