SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Little did Nikki and Justin Foskett know that their planned grand opening of Bare Roots Artisan Coffee Roasting Company would come on the day the pandemic shut everything down.

They didn't despair though, and spent the down time roasting beans, expanding their menu and putting everything they sell online for all to enjoy. Opening a new business is always tough, exciting and stressful, but COVID-19 added a whole lot of unknowns to the picture.

Please join Make Tahoe Records at Scott Forrest Fine Art Studio on Saturday, August 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for The Art and Music of Yvonne McGrath in the premiere of “Sound and Vision.” This is a series of introductions to the work of visual artists and the reciprocal connections of music and their art.

In the spirit of reciprocity, a portion of the proceeds from sales of Yvonne McGrath’s work and vinyl from the Make Tahoe Records pop-up exhibit will be donated to the Tahoe Art League as part of the “Saturday Show of Support” series.

This Saturday, July 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., join Make Tahoe Records at Scott Forrest Fine Art Studio to help Tahoe's very own Tahoe Arts Alliance. Make Tahoe Records will be featuring an exhibit of "Freshly Groomed Vinyl", a curated collection of freshies on vinyl including new releases from independent and alternative artists. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

This annual exhibit is designed to bring people together, showcase the diversity of our community, and celebrate Pride Month.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Compass Clay Studio, a learning ceramic studio and art gallery, is open for business in South Lake Tahoe. Owners and instructors, Colleen Sidey and Bryan Yerian are ceramic artists with over 40 years combined experience, Lake Tahoe Community College art faculty members, and local elementary school art enrichment teachers. Colleen and Bryan have lived in South Lake Tahoe for over ten years and created Compass Clay Studio as a way to provide the local community with access to the clay experience.

The studio is located at 976 Edgewood Circle.

Valhalla Tahoe is presenting Broadway in Blue starting July 5 and running two weekends. The show, a revue of contemporary and classic Broadway tunes performed by some of Lake Tahoe’s best singing and acting talent, was created by Gabriella Giocomo especially for Valhalla. Giocomo was one of three finalists in Valhalla’s WordWave One-Act play script competition in 2017. When she came for the stage reading hosted at the Boathouse Theatre she was inspired by the space and submitted the show in the winter of 2018 for review by Valhalla.

The community is warmly invited to a trio of free artist receptions and exhibit openings at Lake Tahoe Community College on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. Come and enjoy the art along with free refreshments with your fellow art lovers.

California Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon has appointed Belinda Valles Faustinos to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board. Her appointment follows the recent resignation of Governing Board member Elizabeth Carmel, a fine art landscape photographer who represented the Speaker’s office on the board for the last three and a half years.

“The Tahoe Art League “Artist Studio Tour” is an extraordinary self-guided tour that occurs each year on the last weekend of July and the first weekend in August. There are numerous open studios to visit with either individual artists or artist collectives showing their work and studio spaces, offering a unique glimpse into what inspires each of these talented Lake Tahoe residents.

While many may hike past Lily Lake to get to a myriad of trails going through Desolation Wilderness, I took the trail to go the historic Glen Alpine Springs. Even though my walk was mid-day on October 13, I passed many other hikers on the two-mile hike, all enjoying the warm, un-fall like weather.

Even though I've lived in South Lake Tahoe for 36 years, I'd never gone past Lily Lake. Wanting to get to the springs before winter, there was no time like the present to finally accomplish that task!

Posh Finds has been opened in South Lake Tahoe since November 4, and owner Krystal Garcia is excited about what's to come. The store features lightly used clothing and accessories along with some new items she's been able to find at deep discounts.

"I like nice things but hate to pay retail," said Garcia. Her new shop has a large selection of designer jeans, shoes, tops, jewelry, dresses and little bit of everything.

She moved to South Lake Tahoe over five years ago and has been a stay at home mom. The store, she says, is a long time coming and will fill a void in the area.

The Tahoe Art League will hold an outdoor show at South Tahoe Middle School June 28 to July 1. This Outdoor Show venue features diversified artists from throughout the region.

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s insurance carriers have reported to the Nevada Division of Insurance (Division) that they have received around 1,100 claims as a result of the Caughlin Ranch and Washoe Drive fires. The dollar amount of these claims, mostly due to fire, wind or smoke damage is approaching $35 million.

These insurance claim estimates show the dangers of wildfire. Nevadans should take action during Nevada Wildfire Awareness Week to prepare their homes and evaluate their insurance to prepare for wildfire season.
