Four Arrested in South Lake Tahoe For Buying Alcohol For Minors

Four people, including two locals, were arrested on Friday night during Shoulder Tap Decoy Operations at South Lake Tahoe stores that sell alcohol.

On March 15, 2014, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrested Stevie Smith, a 23 year old from Pasadena, Harvey Hampton, a 58 year old from South Lake Tahoe, Charles Kerr, a 72 year old from South Lake Tahoe and Hamza Salmi, a 32 year old from San Francisco. As of 10 p.m. Friday, 522 people had been arrested statewide during the largest decoy operation in California's history.

LTCC Adopts a Day of Nutrition to Feed the Hungry

A group of volunteers from Lake Tahoe Community College donated their time to Bread and Broth recently, helping to prepare and serve a hot meal to hungry locals as part of the Adopt a Day of Nutrition program. Four LTCC staffers donned aprons and kitchen gloves to help prepare and serve food, and assist with the cleanup.

40th Anniversary of Lake Tahoe Community College Celebrated

On March 5, 1974, the voters approved the formation of a college district that would serve students on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. For 40 years the Lake Tahoe Community College has been providing higher education for the community, and its successes and growth were honored in a ceremony Wednesday. Community members joined college staff, board members and students at the original location of the college, 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, which is now the home of the Econo Lodge.

Annual Parking Passes Now Available for South Lake Tahoe Residents

3/4/14 10 am update: Passes will not be available until 3/5/14.

In an effort to keep up their end of the "parking bargain," the City of South Lake Tahoe has started selling annual parking permits to local residents in the 89448-89449 and 96150-96158 zip codes. In last month's City Council meetings with the public and a group opposed to paid parking, city leaders had promised to work out a parking plan that would address the issues proposed, and a paid permit for locals is the first step.

Hugelkultur Planned for South Lake Tahoe Community Garden

Hugelkultur (HOO-gul-culture) meaning hill culture or hill mound. It turns woodsy compost into the base of sustainable gardening with the use of very little water.

This word may not be in everyone's vocabulary (yet) but residents in South Lake Tahoe will soon be seeing this demonstrated if the community garden at Bijou Park is approved by the City Council.

Heads Shaved to Raise Funds for Cancer Research

Bailey Johnson was a four time Stage 4 cancer survivor by the time he was 5. Now a student at South Tahoe High, Bailey underwent surgery just over three weeks ago to help straighten his spine which was damaged while undergoing radiation.

Caitlyn Drennan is 3 1/2. She was diagnosed with cancer at birth and underwent chemotherapy when just 2 days old. She now needs a walker due paralysis below the knee but is a survivor of Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Asks: What Do You Want to See at the Y?

Several South Lake Tahoe residents showed up at the presentation of the Tahoe Area Plan at the airport on Thursday. Most agreed that the area known as the "Y" needs to be changed with an area plan, but which direction to a take to a final plan is where people differ.

The evening consisted of a presentation by John Hitchcock, who is on loan to the city from the TRPA for this project as Planning Project Manager. After he spoke the group broke out into three breakout sessions, each focuses on one of three choices presented as the future concept for "Y" area.

City Manager Nancy Kerry today announced the selection of Mark Carlson as Administrative Services Director. Mr. Carlson is anticipated to begin his service with the City in early April.

Ty Sprock of South Lake Tahoe to Compete in Junior World Ski Championships

South Lake Tahoe may just have a future Olympian in its midst. 18 year old Whittell High School graduate Ty Sprock is one of 16 elite U.S. athletes that will be competing in the 2014 FIS Alpine Junior World Championships in Slovakia February 26 through March 6.

Improvisation Group Brings the Laughs to LTCC

Large Group Shows Up to Hear About South Lake Tahoe Airport Master Plan

They came to have their opinion heard. They came to call for the closure of the airport. They came to support the airport. They came to be a part of the South Lake Tahoe Airport Master Plan process.

An overflowing crowd showed up at the South Lake Tahoe City Council chambers Thursday night to hear about the process involved in preparing the upcoming plan for the future of the airport, why a new plan is needed and what it takes to replace the outdated 1992 Master Plan.

South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition Seeks Help to Make Lasting Impact in Community

Melody Easton is here to make a difference. Recently tapped as the coordinator for the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, the action oriented Easton has hit the ground running.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services was awarded a Federal Drug Free Communities grant, bringing in $125,000 for each of the next five years to help combat drug and alcohol abuse among the youth of South Lake Tahoe. Once the grant was awarded a coordinator needed to be hired. Easton was hired and the Concordia College graduate and her husband packed up and moved from Portland, Oregon.

South Lake Tahoe Residents Have Many Upcoming Opportunities to be Involved in the Future of the City

The City of South Lake Tahoe is encouraging residents to be informed and engaged in the community and is offering several opportunities in the coming weeks to do just that.

"In an engaged community, every person has the information, the opportunities and the support needed to take action and lead change throughout their lives," according to the Knight Foundation. "When people become involved, and exercise their full democratic rights, they make their lives and those of others better."

Parking a Hot Topic at South Lake Tahoe City Council Meeting

Paid parking remains a hot topic in the city which was proven by the packed house at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. On the agenda was discussion and possible action on an initiative to prohibit paid parking on city streets.

Tahoe 4 Tahoe (T4T), a local group organized to fight paid parking, gathered more than the required signatures to get the initiative put on the ballot, but legal precedence and unforeseen consequences of the proposed initiative led the city council to vote unanimously to have a Fiscal Impact Report completed in the next 30 days.

South Lake Tahoe Community Members Participate in Round Table Discussions

Over 100 members of the South Lake Tahoe community attended the 3rd Annual Tahoe Chamber Community breakfast on Tuesday where they shared their visions of what was needed for success.

Those attending broke up into group discussions on a few topics including what they felt small businesses in the area need in order to be better prepared. Since the event was put on the by chamber, there was also discussion was about what the TahoeChamber.org could provide to improve their member's experiences.

South Lake Tahoe's Maddy Bowman and Squaw Valley's Nate Holland Take Gold in X Games

Less than two weeks before heading to Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Olympian Maddie Bowman from South Lake Tahoe won the Halfpipe Skiing Gold medal at the X Games in Aspen on Friday. Olympian Nate Holland from Squaw Valley took snowboardcross gold and David Wise from Reno won gold in the halfpipe skiing.

South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman Angela Swanson Cleared of Wrongdoing by DA's Office

The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office cleared South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman Angela Swanson of any criminal wrongdoing in a letter sent to the City Council.

No public announcement was made to the media and the DA's office hasn't responded to a request by SouthTahoeNow.com to see a copy of the letter.

Selected among several local outstanding youth Josh Kornbeck will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the California Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation. It's Not Just South Lake Tahoe Athletes Who Are Headed to the Olympics, Local Doctors are too!

There are more local additions to the U.S. Olympic team than the three South Lake Tahoe athletes who were named to the U.S. Olympic team. Two local doctors are also headed to Sochi for the winter games.

Holiday Pet Food Drive at Coldwell Banker Select in Zephyr Cove A Huge Success

On December 28th, Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate in Zephyr Cove decided to give back to the pets in the community by hosting a Holiday Pet Food Drive, yielding big results. Leading up to the 28th, close to 600 lbs of dog and cat food were donated to pets in need. In addition, many pet toys and other items were donated, on top of $170 in check donation.

Facebook Helps Locate Missing El Dorado County Man

A 19 year old man spent 2 nights outdoors after becoming separated from a group of friends who went out for a Saturday evening hike near the Cool, CA community of Auburn Lake Trails. A call came into the El Dorado Country Sheriff's Department on Sunday from a woman who said she saw Facebook posts about the missing young man.

The man's mother was contacted and she told investigators that her son was staying with friends and she didn't know about his disappearance but that she hadn't heard from him and was concerned for his safety.

Helen Keller wrote those words many years ago yet they continue to be very relevant today. As I look forward to 2014 I also like to reflect on another one of my favorite quotes, this one from Ghandi, "you must be the change you wish to see in the world."

South Lake Tahoe Prepares for New Year's Eve

With a projected 30,000 people at SnowGlobe and another 30,000 at Stateline, local police and sheriff's officers will have their hands full.

70 South Lake Tahoe Police officers, El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies and local CHP officers will be on duty Tuesday in order to ensure all goes smoothly.

Sergeant Josh Adler of SLTPD said they are expecting a smooth New Years celebration due to the previously large group at Stateline being split up with SnowGlobe and the family New Year's Eve event at Heavenly Village. Adler said that there were just a handful of arrests last year.

Craigslist Scam Pulled on SnowGlobe Attendees

They knew something was amiss when they couldn't find the home on Saddle Road listed on their vacation rental home contract. A group of 15 college students came to South Lake Tahoe to enjoy the three day SnowGlobe festival, where their time would be spent at the concert, enjoying the town and kicking back in a fully furnished ski cabin. But the lodging situation wasn't as expected since they fell victims to a "craiglist" scam and paid for a rental home that wasn't real.

"Always My Buddy" Has a Presence at SnowGlobe

Tragedy struck at the 2012 SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe when 19 year old Alyssa Byrne became separated from her friends and died of hypothermia after falling in a snow bank after attempting to walk back to her hotel.

Out of that tragedy, the "Always My Buddy" program was developed. Alyssa's family wanted to make sure another family didn't have to go through what they did by making sure everyone that is an unfamiliar place is safe.

El Dorado County Sheriffs Trying to Reunite Recovered Property With Owners

Throughout recent months El Dorado County Sheriff's Office detectives have been investigating an increasingly high volume of residential burglaries. As previously released, four suspects were arrested related to burglaries. One of those suspects was Gary Joseph Masse who was paroled in July 2013 after serving prison time for a previous burglary conviction.
