South Lake Tahoe man who led NHP on chase tries to escape jail
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/28/2017 - 11:59amA 24-year-old Tahoe man jailed Wednesday after leading Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on a vehicle pursuit from Highway 50 Spooner to downtown Carson City, faces charges of attempting to escape and destruction of jail property, a sheriff’s deputy said.
According to the arrest report, a deputy assigned to the jail on Thursday responded to the housing pod for an inmate, Jesus Salvador Herrera-Casas, attempting to climb through the ceiling. Deputies responded and saw the man climbing up into the ceiling through the ceiling tiles.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood advisory for Placer, Nevada, and Southern Washoe County County through 2:45 p.m. Tuesday May 2.
NDOT reschedules SR28 restriping project - slated to start Thursday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/26/2017 - 6:02pmNevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has rescehduled their restriping project on State Route 28 at Lake Tahoe again, and have moved it up to Thursday, April 27 and Friday, April 28. Motorists can expect travel delays.
Reduced speed limits and travel delays of up to 30 minutes should be anticipated between approximately 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. each day. The mobile road striping operation is scheduled to begin at the State Route 28/U.S. 50 Spooner junction and move westward to the Nevada-California state line.
Chase that started on Spooner Summit ends in downtown Carson City crash

He was placed under arrest and taken to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office for booking on charges of Eluding Police, Reckless driving, Disregard Traffic control device(s), Speeding, and driving without a valid license. He may also be charged with DUI, pending the test results according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Herrarea-Casas made it all the way to downtown Carson City before a Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant decided that the pursuit had to end due to the danger it created for the public.

Jointly, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), Federal Highway Administration, and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency released the Environment Impact Statement (NEPA), Environmental Impact Report (CEQA), and Environmental Impact Statement (TRPA). Minden man dies after crash with semi on US395
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/25/2017 - 10:49amA fatal crash on Monday morning near Gardnverville, Nevada claimed the lift of a 53-year-old Minden man.
At approximately 9:23 a.m. on April 24, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to the crash near US395 and Ray May Way.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2012 Freightliner semi-truck was traveling south on US395, south of Gardnerville. For unknown reasons, a black 2003 Cadillac STS, traveling northbound veered into the path of semi-truck, resulting in a head on collision.
NDOT: SR28 striping rescheduled; Lane shift at bottom of Spooner

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be reducing traffic down to one lane in each direction, and shifting it slightly to the south, starting the evening of Tuesday, April 25 and into early May.
Prescribed burning to continue around Lake Tahoe

Scheduled operations would be near Meeks Bay, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, and Meyers. Weather permitting, operations may continue over the next several weeks.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): The highway is reduced to one lane in each direction at Bridal Veil Falls due to slope damage.
State Route 89 (Placer County/El Dorado County): Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from the Tahoe City “Wye” to Alpine Meadows Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and from Valley View Drive to General Creek State Park from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for dead tree removal.
People not littering roads could save California $67 million annually

Last year, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) spent $67 million on litter removal, collecting enough litter, trash, and debris from highways to fill almost 9,000 garbage trucks.
“That money would have been better spent fixing our roads,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty.
Construction to begin on El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Bike Trail in South Lake Tahoe

The City of South Lake Tahoe's project includes one mile of a Class 1 trail in a dedicated right-of-way separated from the roadway right-of-way on the north side of U.S. Highway 50 between El Dorado Beach and Ski Run Boulevard. The have hired Sierra Nevada Construction (SNC) for the project.

Highway 50 over Echo Summit reopens after snow slide
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/16/2017 - 11:06amA snow slide about 4-5 feet deep and over 30 feet wide went over Highway 50 at Echo Summit, closing the road for over an hour as crews cleaned it up.
At 10:15 a.m. this morning, the slide was reported, at at noon the road at the summit has reopened. Several cars had to be turned around so they could return to Meyers as crews made their way to clear the snow.
Crews clearing seasonally closed Sierra passes, some opening dates projected
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/16/2017 - 10:35amSnow, rocks, boulders, trees and debris are being cleared from roads through the Sierra Nevada that have been closed all winter. Caltrans crews from Districts 9 and 10 are plowing through several feet of snow in some area. While some roads will be opening soon, many have a lot of work to be done before they can open to traffic.
Crews will inspect the road, bridges, culverts to make sure the road is safe for the public before reopening. They will also replace signs that tumbled during the winter.
Public comment sought on tree removal and reseeding at Emerald Fire area
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/14/2017 - 6:23pmTrees will need to be removed from the Emerald Fire area, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is asking for comments on a proposal to remove the hazardous trees and plant seedlings in that area.
“Restoration of the Emerald Fire area will help restore habitat for various wildlife species and provide benefits to the Lake Tahoe watershed,” said LTBMU Forest Supervisor, Jeff Marsolais. “The restoration effort will also provide visual benefits to residents and visitors and allow for a more fire resilient landscape.”
Liberty Utilities invites public to new 50 MW Solar Energy Center

A new solar energy project will be unveiled to the public on Wednesday, April 19 at 9:30 a.m. in the town of Luning, Nevada. Since going on line, the new 50 MW Luning Solar Energy Center has supplied 25 percent of Liberty Utilities' customers’ energy needs with clean, renewable energy.
The Luning center is located on Highway 361 at Mile Marker 25, approximately a three-hour drive from South Lake Tahoe.
“We’re very excited to share this official opening with our customers and the community of Luning,” stated Travis Johnson, Liberty Utilities’ VP of Electric Operations.

Caltrans project outlined to South Lake Tahoe community

This will be their last Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP) task to collect and treat stormwater runoff which accomplishes several other goals as well.

gave an outstanding performance this past weekend during the Central Coast Law Enforcement Exploring Competition in Tulare, Calif. They competed against 21 other police, sheriff and highway patrol posts in 19 different scenarios including felony car stops, shooting skills, written exams, oral interviews, suspicious persons and physical agility.
DCSO Explorers won 13 trophies including second place overall for the entire competition.
Unhitched trailer leads to death of Carson City resident on Reno highway
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/10/2017 - 12:14pmA trailer being towed by a 2007 International Truck became unhitched and traveled across several lanes of I580 near the Mt. Rose Highway on April 6 at about 8:57 a.m., crashing into a car being driven by 63-year-old Filipe Segura.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP), Segura was driving an Oldsmobile Alero and was unable to avoid the trailer that was moving uncontrolled across the highway due to high wind gusts and the road's downhill grade.
Segura, a resident of Carson City, Nevada was wearing a seatbelt.
Body of missing Sacramento woman found in Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/09/2017 - 3:48pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of 62-year-old Pamela Suwinsky was found in the Upper Truckee River Sunday morning, about one-third mile north of Highway 50. Divers found her before noon but did not have positive identification until about 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.
Kingsbury Grade reopens
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/08/2017 - 3:59pmKingsbury Grade (State Route 207) reopened at 4:30 p.m. Saturday after closing Friday afternoon to allow crews to remove a slide and remove trees and boulders.
Rockfall mitigation experts spent Saturday bringing down boulders from the top of a roadside slope on Kingsbury Grade. Heavy precipitation had loosened not only the boulders, but trees as well.
The roadway is now clear and traffic is moving from the Carson Valley to Lake Tahoe. Nevada Department of Transportion (NDOT) and their contractor Q&D Construction made repairs to an eroding roadside slope and extensive rockfall.

Kingsbury Grade closed indefinitely after rocks and dirt slide onto road
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/07/2017 - 8:38am4:15 p.m. update: Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) will remain closed indefinitely on the Carson Valley side of the road as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) continues safety evaluation and removal of major rockfall.
The highway was closed early Friday afternoon as NDOT and contractor Q&D Construction removed loose trees and earth from a roadside slope to help reduce rock and mud fall onto the highway. The slope had slid approximately one foot within the past 24 hours, posing the threat of bringing mud, rock and debris across the highway.

Former Truckee High football coach dies in head-on collision
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/02/2017 - 11:41amFormer Truckee High School head football coach Robert Shaffer was killed in a head-on collision outside of Sierraville at Saturday night according to the California Highway Patrol in Truckee.
Shaffer, his wife Lisa and 22-year-old son Patrick were in their Toyota Corolla on SR-89 in Sierra County just before 9:30 p.m. when a Ford F250 driven by 54-year-old David Slaughter of Sacramento drifted into Shaffer's lane.

Injured backcountry skier rescued from Lake Tahoe's Jake's Peak
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/31/2017 - 2:52pmSearch and Rescue volunteers were dropped off on Jake's Peak Thursday to help an injured backcountry skier get off the mountain which is located inside Desolation Wilderness at Lake Tahoe.
At 2:30 p.m. on March 30, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a call about the injured skier, a 24-year-old man from San Luis Obispo who was in the area on Spring Break. He had been skiing near Jake's Peak when he suffered a lower leg injury and couldn't get out on his own.
Four car crash at Cave Rock Thursday; One injured
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/30/2017 - 6:05pmNevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County emergency crews were called Thursday afternoon to the westbound lane of Highway 50 at the Cave Rock tunnel for a crash involving four vehicles.
The crash was reported at 2:40 p.m. One injury was reported and all vehicles were said to be on their wheels, according to first responders at the scene. Westbound traffic was blocked for a time. Motorists experienced some delays at the time.
No other information was available at this time.
Fundraiser for memorial signs to honor fallen Lake Tahoe firefighter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/30/2017 - 8:39amA stretch of Highway 50 over Echo Summit has been renamed the Firefighter Michael "Mikey" Hallenbeck Memorial Highway, and his family is raising funds to produce and install the signs.
Hallenbeck died fighting the Sierra Fire in August of 2015, near where he worked as a ski life operator. The 21-year-old was also a wildland firefighter for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Sacramento area carjacking suspect causes Hwy 50 closure near Silver Fork

According to CHP in Placerville, a man driving eastbound on Highway 50 east of Ice House Road noticed a car on the right shoulder of the road with a flat tire. As he passed the person in the stopped car they threw an unidentified object at his vehicle. ,

That was the message during last week's Tahoe Talks presentation by Lake Tahoe transportation partners, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and El Dorado County.

December 29, 1986: Brian starts with SLTPD and heads off to the Police Academy in Santa Rosa.
