STATELINE, Nev. - Nine projects were honored as "Best in the Basin" Wednesday during the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board meeting.

For 28 years TRPA's program has showcased projects around the lake that demonstrate exceptional planning, implementation, and compatibility with Tahoe’s natural environment and communities.

No on Measure T leads 2018 campaign donations and expenses in South Lake Tahoe

At the first required filing of campaign paperwork, South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates raised just over $47,000 for the 2018 election season. Mayor Wendy David's $13,499 led candidates, which included a $10,000 loan to get her campaign started. Funds raised by a group formed to challenge Measure T, which bans vacation home rentals in the City outside the tourist core area, has raised $270,112.77 with most of it coming from the National Association of Realtors, local realtors and companies associated with the rentals.

Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe set to resume

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Weather and conditions permitting, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service will continue the fall prescribed fire program with operations in D.L. Bliss State Park on the West Shore tomorrow, October 23, 2018, and in Baldwin Meadow on the south end of Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, October 24. Smoke will likely be present. Mountain lion cub euthanized after wandering into Pollock Pines bakery

Was it the cakes, cupcakes or muffins that brought a mountain lion cub into a Pollock Pines bakery on Monday? A local baker found the 40-50-pound feline inside the shop after it walked through the doors.

Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) arrived at the bakery after a passerby met the bakery employee outside the shop and called 911.

According to EDSO Sgt. Anthony Prencipe, about 10 people had gathered outside the bakery to watch the unlikely customer.

Prescribed burns at two locations around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Weather and conditions permitting, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may conduct prescribed fire operations in Sugar Pine Point State Park on the West Shore and near Twin Peaks on the South Shore beginning today, October 17, 2018. A) Along lakeside of Hwy 89, north of General Creek, 17 acres of understory will be burned by California State Parks. Duration of ignition and smoke production is one week with smoke expected to travel northeast.

DAR surveys pioneer cemetery in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have been working in the historic pioneer cemetery in Al Tahoe, surveying original boundaries and unmarked grave sites dating back to the late 1800s.

Long before there was a South Lake Tahoe, the town of Rowlands rested on the southern shore of Lake Tahoe in the area of the current Bellevue and Lakeview Avenues.

Thomas Rowland built the cemetery for the small community several hundred feet away from the town that bore his name.

$2.3M headed to Lake Tahoe for fire prevention projects

In August, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) awarded $27.5 million to fund high-priority forest health projects designed to combat climate change and reduce the risk of wildfires.

During their board meeting Thursday the California Tahoe Conservancy Board accepted their portion, a $2.3 million grant, for fire prevention projects and related efforts as part of the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative.

The 2018 Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe airport will feature the US Navy Blue Angels flying team and 11 different flying acts this weekend, October 13 and 14.

Gates for the airshow will open at 10:00 a.m. on both Saturday & Sunday, and the airshow will start around 11:30. The starting time is subject to change due to scheduling and weather, so please plan on being ready by 11:00 am.

It wraps up between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Cannabis ordinance conversation goes from anger to compromise

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a referendum to put a halt to the South Lake Tahoe cannabis ordinance was successful, a meeting held Monday was to work through the points of the ordinance Cody Bass and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative took issue with.

Led by the City Council representatives Austin Sass and Brooke Laine, members of the original cannabis workgroup, Cody Bass and some members of the public, about two dozen in total, spent three hours trying to come up direction for the city attorney to use in creating a new ordinance.

SLT City Council candidates respond to 100% Renewable Committee questions

On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to do two things: Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032; and reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040. South Lake Tahoe's Ryan Wallace wins international para-athlete tournament

A South Lake Tahoe man won gold in the Heavyweight Para-Division of the Abu-Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tournament recently in Los Angeles.

Ryan Wallace, who we've written many stories about over the last four years, competed against para-athletes from around the world for the second consecutive year at the tournament. In 2017 Wallace won the silver medal and he spent the last year working tirelessly to improve, capping his 2018 performance with a hard fought 7-0 victory.

South Lake Tahoe public cannabis forum to examine new ordinance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After the referendum to put a stop to the City of South Lake Tahoe's cannabis ordinance received enough signatures, the City Council has reconvened their subcommittee to create a new ordinance.

There will be a public forum on Monday, October 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to gather public input regarding possible next steps for a cannabis ordinance.

Victim identified in fatal Lake Tahoe pedestrian - vehicle collision

South Lake Tahoe resident Michael Spate has been identified as the man who died after being struck by a vehicle just before 7:30 p.m. on September 28, 2018.

The preliminary investigation suggests Spate, who was 65-years-old, was crossing Lake Tahoe Boulevard near the driveway into Denny's and US Bank. He was not walking in a crosswalk.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the season changes it is also the changing of the guard at Cardinale Way in South Lake Tahoe after it was sold to a Texas company, Jim Bagan Toyota.

Joe Cardinale and Jim Bagan ran into each other at a Mazda convention (both have dealerships with that brand as well as Toyota) a few years ago. Whenever they met up after that Bagan would ask Cardinale when he wanted to sell his South Lake Tahoe location according to General Manager Gary Hamner. Motorized scooter riders see change of laws in California in 2019

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of the banning of electric scooters in many cities, Governor Jerry Brown of California has signed a bill that mandates helmets for users only if they are under the age of 18 and if the scooter goes above 15 miles per hour.

The bill, authored by Republican Assemblyman Heath Flora of Ripon, was written to encourage scooter use to alleviate congestion on the state's roads and meet climate change goals of reducing car emissions.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2019.

Letter: City has failed to deliver effective VHR enforcement

Mayor Wendy David has stated that it is okay to have Vacation Home Rentals in residential neighborhoods as long as there is 'consistent' enforcement. Sorry Wendy but planning and zoning are not determined by enforcement. What has been ‘consistent' is the city's failure to deliver effective enforcement. When a neighbor calls in to complain about a problem with a VHR, a warning call goes out to the agent or owner of that VHR to warn them of the complaint. By the time the Enforcement Officer arrives the lights are out and the report reads: "Quiet on Arrival".

Mental Health assisted outpatient treatment program available in El Dorado County

Mental illness can affect any person or family. For those individuals in El Dorado County with the most severe forms of mental illness, the Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) program (also known as the “Laura’s Law” program) is available. The program, coordinated through the El Dorado County Behavioral Health Division of the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), gives additional tools to families, agencies and individuals to help people who need mental health treatment receive those services.
