Vail Resorts announces closures now for season with chance of Heavenly opening for Spring skiing

Following their earlier announcement of temporarily closing all ski resorts due to the coronavirus COVID-19, Vail Resorts today announced all of its North American resorts and retail stores will remain closed for the 2019-20 winter ski season. These closures are amidst the continued challenges associated with the spread of virus across the globe.

Dependent on the COVID-19 situation and weather conditions, Heavenly may reopen in late April/early May. The company may also consider reopening Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado and Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia.

Vail Resorts shutting down all North American operations, including those in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Vail Resorts announced Saturday that they are suspending the operations of all of their North American mountain resorts, retail stores and corporate offices beginning tomorrow, March 15, 2020, for at least one week (through March 22) to assess the rest of the season.

This includes Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Resort and Northstar in the Lake Tahoe area.

New hotel coming to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The old Super 8 motel on Lake Tahoe Boulevard and adjacent Lotus Pho restaurant in South Lake Tahoe are currently closed as pre-construction activities have begun on a four-story 120-unit Hampton Inn and Suites.

The asbestos abatement has been completed as have the pre-demolition permits and the current two-story building is set for demolition soon. Once that happens, crews will be waiting for the May 1 grading date to get started on what is promised to be a "facelift to the area."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - MTV’s SnowGlobe Music Festival has a continued commitment to give back to the South Lake Tahoe community each year, both during and after the three-day outdoor festival.

SnowGlobe 2019 was able to successfully expand their sustainability program, non-profit, and charitable giving initiatives, they said in a report released Monday.

In 2017, SnowGlobe began its partnership with The Sugar Pine Foundation, planting 200 sugar pine seedlings to help restore Lake Tahoe’s sugar pine population, which now makes up less than 5 percent of the Tahoe Forest.

Caesars Entertainment announces sale of Harrah's Reno

Harrah's Reno will soon be coming to an end. The gaming establishment that had its humble beginning as a bingo parlor opened by Bill Harrah in 1937 has been sold to a company that will turn it into a non-gaming mixed-use center.

On Thursday, Caesars Entertainment Corporation and VICI Properties Inc. announced in a press release they signed an agreement to sell Harrah’s Reno Hotel and Casino to an affiliate of CAI Investments for $50 million.

2020 Snowshoe Cocktail Race series begins at Camp Richardson

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Snowshoe Cocktail Race series at Camp Richardson begins on January 18, with the second and third races on Feb. 15 and Mar. 21.

The high stepping fun returns as amateur contestants strap on snowshoes and try their luck in the resort’s annual race. This three-part series held on the beach in front of the Beacon Bar and Grill tests participants’ balance, speed, and agility as racers, cocktail trays in hand, navigate through obstacles, and up and down the beach.

Kudos: LTVA thanks community for their holiday donations

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank the community for their generous donations of toys, food and $900 in cash that was collected for Christmas Cheer All Year at the LTVA’s Nevada Visitors Center during December.

Ted Gaines in South Lake Tahoe to discuss new taxes on commercial and industrial properties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Former California State Senator Ted Gaines will be in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, January 9 to discuss the proposed amendment to Proposition 13 that will remove commercial properties from their property tax protection and tax them on market value and not purchase price.

Gaines is a member of the California Board of Equalization for the 1st district. He will be speaking during the monthly meeting of the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association and the public is invited.

The meeting will be held at the LTVA meeting space at 169 US-50 Stateline, Nev. 9:30 a.m.

SnowGlobe 2019 in South Lake Tahoe announces daily lineup and open single ticket sales

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - MTV has released their daily lineup and single ticket sales for the 9th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival taking place in South Lake Tahoe December 29-31, 2019.

The VIP three-day passes are all sold out, but single festival tickets make it easier for fans of specific artists or time constraints. A limited quantity of Advanced Single Day general admission and VIP tickets have been released.

Column: The Road Ahead: Redevelopment, Collaboration, Community, and Climate

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to several hundred Tahoe City residents on a warm summer evening in August. I was there for a celebration that has been a long time coming.

Residents gathered in the parking lot of the blighted Henrikson Building to take a ceremonial swing of the hammer — to say goodbye to an eyesore of a building whose useful life came to an end years ago. They were also there to celebrate what will soon take shape as Tahoe City’s first new hotel in more than 60 years.

Community meeting on vision plan for Kahle Drive and surrounding area

STATELINE, Nev. - The 30th annual American Century Championship has gone into the record books as one of the biggest and best golf events in Lake Tahoe history. There was an attendance record of 60,550, an economic impact estimated at $30 million for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and now an additional $100,000 will be given away to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Township non-profits.

New fire preparedness tools unveiled by the City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be another fire in California, but when and where cannot be predicted and is unknown - but what is known is there will be another community that is devastated by wildland fire.

Tahoe Township hotels and VHRs now have new $5/night surcharge

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A new $5 per night surcharge will be added to all hotel rooms and other transient lodging accommodations within the Lake Tahoe Township area of Douglas County.

As a result of Senate Bill 461, the new law adding the fee went into effect July 1, 2019, giving the new charge to Tahoe-Douglas Visitor’s Authority (TDVA) for a planned event center in Stateline. It affects all bookings received by the lodging properties after July 1.

South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District renewal process begins

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District (SLTTID) expires at the end of this year and City Council has started the process to renew it for another ten years. The district was originally created in 2006 to secure a stable funding source for tourism promotion and community marketing through self-imposed fees.

Stateline redevelopment area remains intact after Douglas County Commissioners' decision

STATELINE, Nev. - Douglas County Redevelopment Area No. 2 (RDA2) at Stateline is moving forward despite a move to have it dissolved by Douglas County Commissioner Dave Nelson.

There was an overflow crowd at the commissioner's June 20 meeting at Lake Tahoe. Many of those who could not fit in the meeting room were accommodated with audio feed in the judges' chambers and the bottom floor of the parking garage.

16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

STPUD starts process to raise water and sewer rates

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) will start the process to raise water service rates by up to six percent and sewer rates by up to five percent in order to start replacing aging pipes and providing improved fire flow throughout their service area. If fully implemented, this increase would fuel an $81.5M capital improvement program for sewer improvements, and $70M for water system improvements, especially fire flow projects.

City of South Lake Tahoe and owners group reach agreement on Measure T lawsuit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City and the South Lake Tahoe Property Owner's Group have reached an agreement on the enforcement of Measure T, a voter-initiated ballot measure to remove over 1,300 vacation home rentals from neighborhoods by the year 2021.

There were two major portions of the measure though that were to go into effect immediately, a change to occupancy rates and a halt to the issuing of new permits for the vacation accommodations made popular by websites like Airbnb.

Standstill on South Lake Tahoe area highway and streets; Groups looking into solution

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's almost a perfect storm for traffic in Lake Tahoe: extra visitors in town for the holiday weekend and epic ski conditions with snow and chain requirements over US50 and Echo Summit.

On Monday, locals and visitors alike were part of that storm, leaving motorists stranded along US 50, Lake Tahoe Blvd., and all surface streets in Meyers that have a link to the highway over Echo Summit.

SnowGlobe gives back to the South Lake Tahoe community

Christmas "miracle" helps displaced South Lake Tahoe family

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When Laura Alvarez De Ruiz, her husband and three children found themselves homeless just a week before Christmas their future was uncertain.

De Ruiz and her family filled one of six apartments at 3546 Spruce Avenue until December 17. That was when they had to vacate their home after the landlord failed to provide safe housing for residents and the City of South Lake Tahoe shut it down.

G-Eazy and Kascade added to SnowGlobe lineup in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The SnowGlobe Music Festival is giving fans an early Christmas present with their announcement today that some popular acts are now making their way to the end of the year outdoor concert in Lake Tahoe.

G-Eazy, Kaskade, Rae Sremmurd, Tyga, Goldlink, Ashe and Franklyn Watts have been added to this year's line-up. Tickets were not sold out prior to the announcement but they are now expected to go quickly. There are a limited number of three-day and single day tickets still available.

Kirkwood shifts their opening day to Saturday

Originally scheduled for November 21, Kirkwood Mountain Resort has moved their opening date to Saturday, November 24 as long as Mother Nature brings the promised snow.

Oversight committee to be appointed for South Lake Tahoe recreation funds

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An oversight committee will be established for the 2016 voter-approved Measure P which raised tourist accommodation tax (TOT) by two percent to build a new recreation center in South Lake Tahoe.

During Tuesday's City Council meeting the elected team reviewed criteria for the future committee, and what sectors of the community will be sought. Those chosen will take part in the review of how funds are spent and report back to the public.

Column: Decisions nearing for Shoreline Plan and Development Rights

This September and October, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board will move forward with hearings and final milestone decisions on two significant initiatives: A new Shoreline Plan and an overhaul of the agency’s transferable development rights system.

TRPA will hold hearings for both these initiatives at the Governing Board meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 26, and could hold final votes on them as early as Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Ferguson, Carr, Perry and Whaleback Fires still burning

The Perry Fire burning between Reno and Pyramid Lake has now burned 25,600 acres and is now 15 percent contained. It started Friday evening and the cause is unknown at this time.

Free bereavement camp for Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley area kids

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health is hosting Camp Sunrise, a free bereavement camp, for kidse ages 7 to 14 August 16-17 at Galiliee Camp and Retreat Center in Glenbrook.

Kids who have experienced the death of a loved one are invited to attend the camp which offers education and support through a variety of fun-filled activities and programs on the shore of Lake Tahoe.

Yosemite Valley closing due to Ferguson Fire

Even though firefighters gained some ground Monday on the Ferguson Fire, Yosemite National Park has announced they are closing Yosemite Valley and Wawona on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at noon to all visitors due to the ongoing impacts of the fire. These closures include all hotels, campgrounds, and visitor services in Yosemite Valley and Wawona. Park visitors currently staying in park campgrounds and lodging facilities are asked to be out of these areas by noon as well. With the ongoing closure of Highway 140, park visitors can exit the park via Highways 120 and 41.

10th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Classic to bring athletic greats to Truckee

NFL Hall of Famers, former Major League Baseball players, other sports and entertainment celebrities will gather July 8-9 at Schaffer's Mill Golf Club in Truckee to pay tribute to former Oakland Raider Gene Upshaw. The tournament raises funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injury research and, to date, they've raised close to $1.5 million.

Each year this tournament runs the week before the American Century Championship held in South Lake Tahoe, something Upshaw played in while he was alive.

Vail adds new ski resorts and takes over management of Lakeland Village

Vail Resorts has made two announcements this week, one to report their expansion on the slopes, and another that expands their lodging property offerings in South Lake Tahoe.

Vail Resorts has acquired four new mountain resorts: Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont, Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire, Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado, and Stevens Pass in Washington State.
