Good news for shareholders of Vail Resorts Thursday after the results for the second quarter of the fiscal year were released. Vail operates real estate, ski resort and lodging segments including Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar Mountain Resorts in Lake Tahoe.

Vail Resort's net income was $115.8 million for the second fiscal quarter of 2015, representing a 95.3% increase compared to the same period last year.

For the next six days, South Tahoe Now will highlight each of this year's winners of the inagural First Responder Community Hero Award.

There may be a duel this winter over hotel rooms around Lake Tahoe.

Placer County is interested in paying about $3.7 million to buy hotels from private owners and demolish them in the city of South Lake Tahoe, which is in El Dorado County.

South Lake Tahoe doesn't want to lose the hotels, along with the important associated sales and room taxes.

Placer County wants the hotels so it can open development of new lodging along Placer County's north shore of Lake Tahoe, which hasn't had a new hotel built since 1959.

The 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards ceremony was the biggest yet, with 300 people at Thursday's banquet and 175 nominations of local businesses, employees and experiences.

More than 3,400 seasonal employees are needed by Vail Resorts for the upcoming ski season at their Lake Tahoe resorts Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar.

Three job fairs will be held in October where perspective employees can meet with resort personnel and have interviews.

This first job fair will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. at the Red Cliffs Lodge at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. There will be a free shuttle for job fair attendees that will leave the South Lake Tahoe Transit Center at the Y at 9 a.m., returning at 1 p.m.

Vail Resorts, the parent company of South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort, announced Thursday that they are purchasing Park City Mountain Resort for $183M.

The agreement includes the Park City resort's base area—which include property zoned for residential and commercial development—as well as parking, lower ski terrain and lifts.

Northstar California Resort invites golfers and foodies alike to compete in the first annual Tees and Tastings tournament Thursday, August 28. The tournament will feature a two-game, nine-hole tournament with four beer and cuisine pairings throughout the front green of the Northstar Golf Course. Winners will receive tickets to the Wine & Brew Walk event, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 6 during the 29th Annual Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival.

The Sierra Business Council is hosting Peak Innovation, a conference for Lake Tahoe locals, small business owners, communities and local governments. During the conference, Dr. Peter Gleick, an expert in water issues especially in the context of economic and environmental justice, will be at the conference which takes place October 8-10 in Tahoe City. In a National Geographic science blog, Gleick recently repeated the common question, “Why, if the California drought is so bad, has the response been so tepid?”

Festival goers will have their say this Labor Day weekend as Sample the Sierra adds a competitive edge to the food and wine festival with the introduction of a new award – Best Tasting Experience! Attendees will vote for the booth that has their favorite flavorful creation that includes fresh ingredients that are prepared by a local chef or restaurant and then paired with regional wine, beer or spirits. The booth with the most votes will be awarded the Best Tasting Experience of 2014.

Endurance mountain bikers will compete in the Tahoe Trail 100-Kilometer Race at Northstar California Resort Saturday, July 19 – all vying to qualify for the legendary challenge of the Leadville Trail 100-mile mountain bike race in August, which stretches through 100 miles of technical Colorado terrain.

Iconic '70s and '80s soft pop duo Air Supply, known worldwide for their timeless ballads and towering crescendos with hits like "Lost in Love," "The One That You Love," "Sweet Dreams," and "Every Woman in the World" will land, Sept. 12 at Lake Tahoe's MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa for a one-night only performance.

Early registration for Sample the Sierra, Lake Tahoe’s only farm to fork festival, is open until August 1. Early bird tickets at a discounted rate of $30 per person are available until August 1. The Annual Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Spirit of Spring Fundraiser was held on Tuesday, May 13 at Edgewood Tahoe from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
All proceeds from this evening of food and wine will benefit the local kids -- helping them be great!

They knew something was amiss when they couldn't find the home on Saddle Road listed on their vacation rental home contract. There has finally been a lot of construction action at the site of The Chateau Project in South Lake Tahoe over the last couple of months. Many locals have called this area "The Hole" since construction stalled in 2008 but they are now seeing life being put into one of the cornerstones of the South Lake Tahoe Tourist Core.

Heavenly will hire 800 seasonal employees. Northstar will hire 1,100, and Kirkwood will hire 400.
