Detours available for two road projects in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As a part of the 2020 Road Rehabilitation Program, the City of South Lake Tahoe will working on two projects over the next two weeks. They will be reconstructing 3rd & 4th Streets from Lake Tahoe Boulevard to South Avenue and working on the Bellamy Court parking project.

Watsonville cop arrested on suspicion of battery and damage charges in Stateline

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 24-year-old police officer from Watsonville, California was arrested in South Lake Tahoe early Thursday morning on a felony fugitive warrant out of Douglas County.

Tyler Leroy Stephens, a new officer for the Watsonville department, is currently in the El Dorado County Jail awaiting extradition to Douglas County on counts that include battery and destruction of property.

Stateline redevelopment area remains intact after Douglas County Commissioners' decision

STATELINE, Nev. - Douglas County Redevelopment Area No. 2 (RDA2) at Stateline is moving forward despite a move to have it dissolved by Douglas County Commissioner Dave Nelson.

There was an overflow crowd at the commissioner's June 20 meeting at Lake Tahoe. Many of those who could not fit in the meeting room were accommodated with audio feed in the judges' chambers and the bottom floor of the parking garage.

City asks public to weigh in on Heavenly Village parking proposal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There could soon be up to 57 new paid parking spaces around the Heavenly Village to help address the need for parking in the Stateline area of South Lake Tahoe

On Wednesday, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler presented his proposal to about a dozen people who attended a public meeting at the Marriott Grand Residence.

City-owned paid parking kiosks have been in storage since 2014 when Measure P put an end to the use of paid parking in various areas within the City limits, something approved by City Council in 2012.

South Lake Tahoe police jump in to assist two dogs who jumped from 5th floor of parking garage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a normal day of skiing in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, December 7, 2018 for a couple from Oakland, California. They had parked their car on the top floor of the five-story parking garage at Heavenly Village, left their two dogs Titan and Comet inside and hit the slopes for three hours.

Public's help sought in finding Stateline stolen car suspect

STATELINE, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in a stolen vehicle case.

On October 24, 2018, a vehicle was stolen from the parking garage at Harveys Lake Tahoe. The car was recovered in South Lake Tahoe shortly after the theft.

Investigators working on the case have now turned to the public to see if a person of interest can be identified. That person's photo is above.

60-foot South Lake Tahoe community tree cut for Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rockefeller Center in New York City has a Christmas tree as a backdrop for all holiday activities in the Big City since 1933, and now South Lake Tahoe is starting what hopes to be an annual tradition. Standing at 60-feet, the local version isn't quite as big as their neighbor on the East Coast (which runs 60-100 feet and can weigh close to 30,000 pounds), but it serve as a place to warm hearts and be a center of holiday photos and fun.

Letter: This shouldn't be happening

There ought to be a compromise letting city homeowners rent out their houses to vacationers, but the topic is controversial. The city once felt residents should know what was permissible in their neighborhoods and maintained an online database listing. This has been removed. Maybe residents shouldn't know about rentals allowing 22 guests?

22nd annual Lake Tahoe Summit to bring together senators, the public and agencies

Wine Walk at Heavenly Village to raise funds for fire victims

The Heavenly Village will have a Wine Walk on Thursday, November 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sample wines crafted and shared by the Carson Road Wineries (El Dorado County), food specials and chances to win great prizes at every location.

The cost is a $20 donation and all proceeds go directly to Santa Rosa area families and first responders who were affected by the recent wildfires.

Gates at Van Sickle Bi-State Park close for season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has announced that the gates to Van Sickle Bi-State Park are closed for the winter season. Although the park's facilities are closed, the grounds remain open year-round and are enjoyed by those on day outings, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun in the snow.

City's Parking Authority to give $50k annually for parking enforcement

The August, 2002 parking agreement between the South Tahoe Joint Powers Parking Authority (STJPPA) and Tahoe Crescent Partnership(TCP) was amended Tuesday during the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.

Back in the original agreement, it stated STJPPA was responsible for enforcement of the 474-space parking lot in front of Raley's (the Village Center) at Stateline because of the issues Heavenly Village caused in the center's lot.

Man dies after fall from Harveys garage in Stateline

A 29-year-old man died Sunday morning after a fall from the upper levels of the parking structure at Harveys Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nev.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the casino at 3:00 a.m. Sunday, March 26, 2017 when they were notified of a man with a traumatic injury found next to the parking garage.

When paramedics and deputies arrived they found the man, David Garcia, unresponsive and not breathing. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

New parking option in South Lake Tahoe near the Heavenly Village

With the increasing number of people wanting to shop, eat, enjoy music or stroll at the Heavenly Village, parking has always been an issue. With skiers using the Gondola in the village to access Heavenly Mountain Resort, parking is ever more of an issue. The City of South Lake Tahoe's parking garage has always been available, and they've added a special evening cost of just $5 after 5 p.m.

Another option for parking has opened behind Raley's at the Village Center near Stateline. Parking in this lot was once for Heavenly Village employees, but is now open to everyone for a fee.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park closes to cars for season, pedestrians welcome

The gates have closed to Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe, but the grounds will remain open for the public to enjoy year-round.

The California Tahoe Conservancy announced the closure today and wants to remind park users that when the gates close, services such as water, restrooms and trash collection are not available.

Fall and winter park users are reminded to park legally and not to block the gate, and to pack out your garbage so the park can remain clean for all others to follow, and to protect the wildlife.

New and traditional Halloween parties on the South Shore for adults

The 38th Annual Freaker's Ball, Lake Tahoe’s largest, oldest and most extravagant Halloween party, brings the wild with a four-ring costume circus in the Convention Center, Opal Ultra Lounge and Blu Nightclub venues at MontBleu on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. Cost is $35 prior to Saturday, then $40 at the door if tickets are available. Carson City's Ormsby House owners seeking buyer

The owners of the Ormsby House are looking for a buyer to take the long-closed property off their hands.

Don Lehr and Al Fiegehen bought the hotel-casino in 2001, and embarked on what to many was an endless remodeling project that proceeded in fits and spurts for the last 15 years.

On Thursday, Lehr said they are now looking for a buyer for the property, after refusing multiple offers over the years.

"We don't want to run a casino," Lehr said. "Whoever wants to operate it will have to figure out how they are going to finish it."

$5 after 5: Reduced evening parking rates at Heavenly Village garage

Starting Memorial Day Weekend, there is a new parking rate of $5.00 after 5:00 p.m. at the City of South Lake Tahoe owned parking garage at Heavenly Village.

Due to the recent implementation of the new license plate reader system at the parking garage, the City now has flexibility to establish variable parking garage rates.

Businesses in the area who attract an evening crowd for music, dining and entertainment, contacted Cityy staff and requested a reduced evening rate.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department will be giving Heavenly Village business owners training on a brand new parking garage system that will allow them to validate customer's parking as well as purchase parking passes from the ease of their computer.

City adds another location for electric car owners to charge up

Visitors to South Lake Tahoe have several options to charge their cars, with the newest location added in the City owned Heavenly Village parking garage.

The City partnered with ChargePoint, the largest electric vehicle charging station company, and added a system on the first floor of the garage near the elevator. Users will need to have an account with ChargePoint.

South Lake Tahoe man on El Dorado County DA's Wanted List

The El Dorado County District Attorney's office released their weekly "Wanted" list Wednesday, and Brett Matthew Bell is on that list.

"Bell is a habitual offender in the South Lake Tahoe area," according to their press release.

Bell is wanted for the theft of a 2015 Jeep Cherokee from the valet parking garage at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.

The 27-year-old is Caucasian, 6'0", 180 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

"The Loft" opens in South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Village

The Loft opened on December 16 in South Lake Tahoe, offering the area's first indoor year-round live theater which also includes a lounge and Italian dining room.

Designed by PR Entertainment, the $1 million complex features 107-seats, a separate dining area serving authentic Italian cuisine, bar and upscale lounge, all on the top floor of Heavenly Village above the movie theater.

Magic and illusion fans will appreciate "Magic Fusion," The Loft's show staring Tony Clark, winner of the coveted Magician of the Year award and numerous television appearances.

The Loft at Heavenly Village has been in the works for months, and now it's just a few weeks from opening day on December 15.

The new indoor, year-round live theater is in a newly created space above the current Heavenly Village Cinemas created by PR Entertainment. It will include a bar and lounge, 107 seat theater and Italian restaurant featuring Chef Lisa Devenchezi-Miller, who also owns of Capisce? in South Lake Tahoe.

Work to begin on the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence

The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence plans have been approved, and construction preparation for the parking garage will begin this month.

The Center of Excellence will expand orthopedic, sports performance, and wellness services on the Barton Health campus. Individuals will work with a health navigator and a team of medical providers to develop and implement a customized care plan that integrates health, fitness, nutrition, and medical expertise.

Tahoe Bike Challenge wraps up with a Cycle Celebration

The 2nd annual Cycle Celebration will culminate the Tahoe Bike Challenge where 315 riders made 2,706 trips and covered 17,299 miles in the Lake Tahoe area on their bikes between June 1 and 14. All of those miles saved participants $3,845 in gasoline.

Bellamy Court at the back of Heavenly Village (by the parking garage) will be closed off for the celebration on Saturday, June 20 for a plethora of activities to celebrate biking in Lake Tahoe from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

New restaurant and concert venue proposed for Heavenly Village

The owners of Heavenly Village Cinemas want to turn an empty third floor space on the property into a restaurant and bar with an entertainment venue with stadium style seating for 110 people. But, in order to do so, they need to buy some extra commercial floor area (CFA) from the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Counterfeit ring broken up in El Dorado County

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies arrested five Bay Area residents on Thursay who are accused of being part of a counterfeit credit card ring.

On April 30, 2015 at about 1:00 p.m., deputies responded to Red Hawk Casino for a fraudulent use of a credit card. Red Hawk casino security reported two persons inside the casino attempted to use forged or stolen credit cards in an attempt to obtain cash. One was described as an adult Hispanic man and the other as an adult African American woman.

Flash mob to bring awareness to domestic violence being held Saturday

Men, women and children have been practicing for the big flash mob on Saturday in South Lake Tahoe which is being held to bring awareness to domestic violence.

The "One Billion Rising Revolution" is occurring around the world on February 14, a large mass action to end violence against women. Originally held o Valentine's Day in 2012, the movement is bringing awareness to the staggering statistics that one in three women will be raped or beaten during her lifetime. with the world population at seven billion, this adds up toe more than one billion women and girls affected.

South Lake Tahoe's Top Stories of 2014

When reflecting over the past year it's hard to remember all that happened in one's life, unless you're good at keeping a journal and you have time to re-read it.

As I look back at what happened in South Lake Tahoe over the last 365 days, a lot happened, but what may seem to be a top story to me may not seem as important to a reader.

I reviewed our analytics, the numbers that are kept to show how many people read South Tahoe Now stories at any given point, and drew from those numbers to come up with the "South Lake Tahoe's Top Stories of 2014."

Crowds flock to South Lake Tahoe; Heavenly opens Stagecoach

If you have driven anywhere in South Lake Tahoe this week, you'll know that droves of visitors have decided to come to town for the holidays. With both Christmas and New Years Day on a Thursday many have made their visit a four or five-day long weekend.

Highway 50 from Meyers to Camino has seen heavy traffic in both directions. According to travelers, Sno-Parks at Strawberry and near Echo Summit caused traffic to come to a halt as far away as Kyburz as dozens of cars lining both sides of the highway.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park closes to vehicle traffic; pedestrians welcome

The gates to Van Sickle Bi-State Park closed today for the winter, but, as always, people are invited to take the easy walk into the park.

The California Tahoe Conservancy said today that the park will be closed from October 31 to May 1.

Paid parking is available nearby at the Parking Garage at Heavenly Village. The park provides opportunities for short day use outings, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun in the snow, however sledding is not allowed.

Barton Auxiliary hosts a Blood Drive

Donate blood and make a difference at the Barton Auxiliary Blood Drive on Monday, December 1 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel located at 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe. The drive will be open from noon to 6 p.m. in the 1st floor conference room.

Parking is validated for the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel parking garage at the blood drive check in.

This event is coordinated by the Barton Auxiliary, a dedicated group of Barton Hospital volunteers.

Heavenly Village businesses can now buy reduced parking validations for customers

The South Lake Tahoe City Council recently voted to offer reduced parking tickets to businesses in the Heavenly Village in order to get more of them on board with offering validation to their customers.

Businesses can now pay one dollar for an hour of validation. The movie theater pays $.35 per hour for their tickets. They previously offered free validation to movie goers for four hours of parking but that will now be reduced to three hours.

The city is looking for ways to advertise participating businesses on signage in the city owned garage.

Changes on the South Shore: Edgewood's new lodge, new look

Editor's note: This is part of a series on all of the change going on in South Lake Tahoe. We'll be updating you with photos and news.

Ground won't break until May on the new Edgewood Tahoe Resort but the golf course is already undergoing major changes to prepare for the big project. Trees have been cleared, the 9th hole has been reconfigured and made into a par 3, and a 10 foot tall fence is being erected around the construction site.

The new pier has already been constructed and will allow guests to boat to the resort.

City Council reduces South Lake Tahoe parking garage rates for retailers

Parking rates for Heavenly Village retailers wishing to validate customer's tickets were lowered from $1.50 per hour to $1 per hour in Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. The movie theater validations were lowered from four hours to three hours as well.

Annual Parking Passes Now Available for South Lake Tahoe Residents

3/4/14 10 am update: Passes will not be available until 3/5/14.

In an effort to keep up their end of the "parking bargain," the City of South Lake Tahoe has started selling annual parking permits to local residents in the 89448-89449 and 96150-96158 zip codes. In last month's City Council meetings with the public and a group opposed to paid parking, city leaders had promised to work out a parking plan that would address the issues proposed, and a paid permit for locals is the first step.

Meyers Grassroots Community Meeting to Address New Meyers Plan

Winter Wine Walk Hosted by Tahoe Chamber

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual Winter Wine Walk BAHM on Thursday, December 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Shops at Heavenly Village.

The walk starts at the Marriott Grand Residence where participants will receive a passport with a list of all businesses participating, a wristband, wine glass and raffle tickets. Participating businesses will then stamp the passport and pour a taste of El Dorado County wines as well as showcasing their store. Free ice skating voucher good for the whole evening.
