Family fun at Homebrew for the Homeless fundraiser

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is holding their annual fundraiser, Homebrew for the Homeless, on Saturday, September 23 at the DDRC in Minden, Nevada from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

This is a family-friendly event, presented in collaboration with Hops Envy, and will feature live music, a homebrew beer competition, Poker Run, chili cook-off as well as horseback rides, face painting lawn games and bounce house for children. There will also be food and non-alcoholic beverages. There will also be a silent auction.

Use of counterfeit bills on the rise in El Dorado County

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is reporting a significant increase in the amount of counterfeit currency being passed along the Highway 50 corridor. The bills found to be fake have consisted mainly of $20 and $100 dollar bills.

The suspects have passed the bills at El Dorado County businesses in exchange for products or in the purchase of gift cards.

According to EDSO Sgt. Tasha Thompson, Safeway stores in particular seem to be targeted, and use of the fake bills at self-checkout stations has been a common occurrence.

Live Violence Free to celebrate 40 years of serving community with Gala

It was this game that raised the first dollar to fund an organization that would go on to help thousands of South Lake Tahoe community members affected by domestic violence, including more than 1,000 last year.

As Live Violence Free (LVF,) formerly the SLT Women’s Center, celebrates 40 years of serving the community with its annual Sunset Gala on Sept. 15, board members, staff and volunteers are honoring their predecessors.

Buffalo Bill's Wild West at Dangberg Historic Park

No extension or new purchase agreement accepted for Kingsbury Middle School

It's back to the drawing board for the Douglas County School District (DCSD) Board of Trustees after they officially decided to not give Patrick Taylor and Lake Parkway LLC another extension in their effort to buy Kingsbury Middle School.

Citing no confidence in the buyer's ability to put a deal that can close together, the trustees voted unanimously to take the steps needed to put the old middle school back on the market.

"I think the School District made a poor decision today," Patrick Taylor of Lake Parkway LLC told South Tahoe Now. "They are very unrealistic."

Work begins at Bijou Marketplace; Whole Foods 365 plans first Lake Tahoe store

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "We've been waiting to be in South Lake Tahoe for a long time," said R. Adam Smith, Executive Director of Store Development for Whole Foods in Northern California. "Couldn't be more thrilled than to be here today."

Smith took part in Monday's groundbreaking at the new Bijou Marketplace along with the Jim Halferty and Chris Peto of Halferty Development Ground, the owners of the property along Highway 50 and the corner of Ski Run Boulevard, and local officials.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office takes to the airwaves with KOH 780AM

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be partnering with radio personality Jon Sanchez of KOH 780AM for the third time in a series of eight radio events to be broadcast for the community.

The next event is a live-remote broadcast on Friday, August 4, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Sanchez Ranch Meat Company located in Minden, Nev. Open House at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Once a year the public has the opportunity to explore the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care facility. On Sunday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., they will open their doors to where the wild birds and animals are rehabilitated.

For 40 years the non-profit has been serving wildlife in the Sierra and normally the only people allowed past the front door are the volunteers.

Truckee "Secret Garden" open for tours after public gains access

Truckee has it's own "Secret Garden," a lush valley full of rare carnivorous plants and threatened bird species that has been preserved and kept from the public for more than 100 years.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust and Nature Conservancy partnered together and bought over 1,200 acres in the Lower Carpenter Valley for $10.3 million, 600 acres that is so sensitive that initially the only access with be through guided tours. 637 acres were purchased last year and treat hikers and mountain bikers to Crabtree Canyon. The final 80-acre parcel is under contract for purchase by the partners.

Buyer has one week to close escrow on Kingsbury Middle School sale

The sale of Kingsbury Middle School to Lake Parkway LLC is still on, for now.

At a special meeting of the Douglas County School District Monday, the board voted unanimously to give the buyer until Monday, July 31 to come up with the rest of the $3.15 million purchase price for the middle school which has sat vacant since the 2008-09 school year.

Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City

In their 77th year of providing scouting opportunities to boys in the Carson City and Carson Valley area, Boy Scout Troop 33 is hosting their 4th annual Send A Scout to Camp Car and Truck Show on Saturday, August 12 at Fuji Park in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

Linkin Park cancels Lake Tahoe concert after death of lead singer

As fans around the globe try to come to grips with the death of Chester Bennington, Linkin Park has canceled their American Tour which included a stop in Lake Tahoe at the Harvey's Outdoor Concert Arena on September 1.

"We are incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Chester Bennington," Live Nation, the tour's promoter, said in a statement Friday. "The Linkin Park One More Light North American Tour has been canceled and refunds are available at point of purchase. Our thoughts go out to all those affected.”

Hike with a ranger this summer at top of Heavenly Gondola

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The sun is out and the snow is melting - now is the time to get out and enjoy summer on your National Forest lands! The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Heavenly Mountain Resort invite you to Hike with a Ranger this summer. Hikes will take place every Friday and Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The duration of the guided hike is approximately one hour and will continue every weekend through September 2, 2017, weather permitting.

Two new members added to Douglas County K9 unit

There are two new members to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Beny and Bane.

Beny is from Slovakia and is a one-year-old German Shepard. His new partner is canine handler Deputy Adam Windsor, who has been with DCSO for 13 years. Deputy Windsor described Beny as "mellow."

Activities surround 10th anniversary of Angora Fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - On June 24, 2007, the Angora Fire started at an illegal campfire at about 2:15 p.m. near North Upper Truckee Road in Meyers. The wind driven wildfire consumed 3,100 acres, destroyed 242 homes and 67 commercial structures, and damaged 35 other homes. As many as 2,180 firefighters battled the blaze with was 100% contained by July 2. There will be several community events to mark this tragic anniversary.

Nevada State Fair this weekend, El Dorado County Fair follows

Area residents and visitors can enjoy two big fairs with rides, music and exhibits. The 2017 Nevada State Fair runs from June 8 to June 11, and the El Dorado County Fair goes from June 15-18.

Douglas County seniors and community center receive generator donation

Douglas County Community & Senior Center received a 125 KW generator for backup emergency power that will allow the facility to better serve as an emergency evacuation facility. The generator will also protect 8,000 + frozen meals and $10,000 worth of food products held in the freezers and coolers in the Senior Center Dining Room kitchens during a power outage. This emergency generator will also provide power in the Douglas County Health Clinic, located inside the Community and Senior Center which services the healthcare needs of many Douglas County residents.

Reception for new South LakeTahoe art gallery at City Hall

A reception to unveil the new art gallery at City Hall in South lake Tahoe will be held on Monday, June 12 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The public is invited to this free event.

The City and Tahoe Arts Alliance (TAA) have teamed up on the project which will bring work of local artists to the walls at the entrance of City Hall at the airport. Their art will be rotated throughout the year and all art will be available for purchase.

Lake Tahoe Basin fuelwood permit sales begin May 30

LAKE TAHOE, Calif/Nev. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of personal use fuelwood permits at the Forest Supervisor’s Office in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, and at the Incline Village office on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

Escrow closes on "The Chateau," luxury condo-tel planned

The sale of "The Chateau at the Village" in South Lake Tahoe is complete and the eight acres of land and entitlements are now owned by Tahoe Chateau Land Holding, LLC, a Chinese-American investment group.

The holding company, owned by Kawana Holdings, will own "air rights" above the existing retail area, related parking and the garage structure, the former convention center pad. The seller, Owens Realty Mortgage Inc., keeps the existing retail buildings and improvements that are home to McP's, Dough and various shops.

New zip line to go through treetops in South Lake Tahoe this summer

The Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.

Once the ride is completed, guests enjoy a scenic ATV ride back to the top of the Gondola. It is a three-hour long experience.

Tahoe Arts Project Spaghetti Night at Bert's

City of South Lake Tahoe sells property to Halferty Development for $3.1 million

Portions of the land where Knight's Inn currently sits and the corner lot at Ski Run Boulevard and Highway 50 were sold today to the Halferty Development Corporation for $3,100,000.

During a special meeting of the City Council two agreements were approved. The first was a Commercial and Disposition and Development Agreement (CDDA) and the second was a Purchase and Sale Agreement by and between the City of South Lake Tahoe and Halferty.

About Being Homeless: Meet Blue at SLT Library

Viewing guide for Amgen women's races around Lake Tahoe

On Thursday and Friday, May 11 and 12, over 120 of the world's elite cyclists will descend upon Lake Tahoe for Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women’s Race empowered with SRAM. The race presenter AEG, the world’s leading sports and live entertainment company, created routes that will challenge these top female cyclists. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue looks to City Council for new boat

Without a boat since 2015, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) will ask City Council for $75,000 on Tuesday for the purchase of a used SAFE boat.

The former fire rescue boat, Marine 17, was taken off the lake (decommissioned) in 2015 after 15 years of service. Needed repairs amounted to more than the value of the boat. Since the SLTFR has borrowed Marine 2 which belongs to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Tahoe Chamber After Five mixer at two South Lake Tahoe restaurants

The next Tahoe Chamber After Five Mixer will be a joint event with members and locals invited to both the Blue Angel Cafe and neighboring Chimayo Street Grill in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, April 27 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This all-inclusive social event offers the South Shore the opportunity to mix and mingle with local business owners, young professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.

April's After Five will begin with happy hour at Chimayo Street Grill then the party moves over to Blue Angel Cafe for tasty appetizers and delicious drink specials.

Join in on helping others during "Pay it Forward Week" in South Lake Tahoe

Most places take just one day to officially "Pay it Forward" but one person in the South Lake Tahoe community has made it his goal to cause a ripple effect of kindness through the community for a whole week.

International "Pay it Forward" day is on Friday, April 28 and more than 80 countries and 70 cities across America have made proclamations to join the global initiative and make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness across the world. Small acts of kindness, when multiplied by millions of people, can literally change the world for the better.

RVs, beach sand and summer music on Tahoe Paradise Resort board meeting
