Fast moving wildfire south of Gardnerville

5:15 p.m. update: Weather is helping fire fighters on the fire burning south of Gardnerville.

Recommended evacuations have been lifted and residents can return to their homes in the Ruhenstroth area. The area on the west side of Highway 395, including Stone’s Throw, Frontage Road and the Riverview Mobile Home Park remain closed to the residents.

Highway 395 north and southbound will be opening soon, single lane only with a pilot vehicle.

“The conditions are improving due the light rain, decrease in the winds and cooler temperatures,” said Deputy Chief Dave Fogerson.

Snow in LakeTahoe's forecast for Sunday and Monday

Friday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 68.

Time to trade in those shorts and sandals for a sweater and socks as temperatures drop and precipitation enters the area at the end of the weekend.

A quick moving weather front moving through the Lake Tahoe Basin on Sunday is expected to leave behind 1-2" of snow over the passes and less than 1/2" at lake level. Sunny skies and fall temperatures will return by Tuesday.

Today - Sunny, with a high near 63. Southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Fall colors in abundance: Wind, rain and snow in forecast

Fall colors are near their peak in Lake Tahoe and Hope Valley, and with wind, rain and snow in the forecast, this may be the last few days to witness their spectacular golds, yellows and reds.

Not quite time to get on the slopes, but it certainly appears Mother Nature will attempt to get snow in the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend with snow levels forecast at lake level. Light snow is expected and there may be impacts to travelers over Highways 50 and 80.

Lake Tahoe at natural rim for first time since April

On April 9, 2016, Lake Tahoe reached its natural rim for the first time in ten months after a wet winter gave much needed water to the lake. Since then the melting snowpack was enough to keep water levels above its natural rim, that is, until today.

The natural rim is 6,223 feet.

There is 20-50 percent chance of rain in the area through Wednesday, but rainfall amounts aren't forecast to be measurable.

Warm weekend in South Lake Tahoe, chance of rain next week

If being outdoors is on your weekend agenda in Lake Tahoe, you'll be enjoying sunny skies and warm temperatures with highs around 80 and lows near 40. A possibly wet system is moving towards Northern Nevada and California Monday, and could result in rain in South Lake Tahoe.

Friday - Sunny, with a high near 81. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Friday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 40. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Restoration work from fuel spill at Zephyr Cove Resort resumes on Monday

Zephyr Cove Resort will remain open for business as soil impacted by a 2011 underground fuel release is removed from an area near the south beach volleyball courts starting Monday, September 12.

Even though those driving by and visiting the resort will see the activity, impact to operations is expected to be minimal. There may be some disruption to parking and the volleyball area but watercraft rentals and sightseeing boats will continue to operate during the excavation.

Food Bank returns to South Lake Tahoe for free farmer's market and food distribution

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be stopping by South Lake Tahoe on August 24 with their truck full of fresh fruit and vegetables and other emergency food supplies for those in need.

There is one allocation of supplies available for each qualifying household at the pantry distribution which will take place at the American Legion Hall at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Lake Tahoe was at a crossroads in 1997. The lake’s famous water clarity, once measuring 100 feet, was declining year after year because of stormwater pollution from roads and developed areas and erosion from streams damaged by logging and cattle grazing.

Some rain and thunderstorms may hit the South Shore by the end of the week, but at this point weather models don't think there is much precipitation associated with them. This biggest chance for rain is on Friday when there is a 50 percent chance of precipitation. The rest of the week is 20 percent chance of rain.

Local agencies anticipate spotlight Obama's Lake Tahoe visit brings

Tickets to the 20th annual Lake Tahoe Summit quickly sold out on Monday once the White House announced President Obama would attend the event on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The national spotlight will be on South Lake Tahoe, giving local agencies the opportunity to show the local efforts on keeping Tahoe Blue have worked by highlighting the progress that has been made to combat pollution, promote restoration, tackle invasive species and protect Lake Tahoe's shoreline.

Sugar Pine seedlings need human help with watering due to lack of rain

Mother Nature hasn't been bringing the normal summer rain she normally does, so help from the Sugar Pine Foundation and their volunteers are helping the newly planted baby sugar pines to survive.

SOS Outreach Camp students recently helped water the seedlings in the Gondola Fire Area in South Lake Tahoe, and more watering trips are planned.

Despite near average rainfall in much of Northern California this past winter, 60 percent of the state remains in severe or extreme drought. Groundwater basins and many reservoirs are badly depleted as the state’s drought grinds into a fifth year. Those living in, and visiting, South Lake Tahoe, have enjoyed higher water levels to view, boat and recreate in.

Pyrotechnic crews finish up preparations for Lake Tahoe fireworks show

Tens of thousands of people will be enjoying the Lights on the Lake fireworks show over Lake Tahoe Monday, most of them unaware of the hundreds of hours of work put into their enjoyment.

"We love out job," said Zambelli Fireworks Western Region Project Manager John Hagan. "We can use explosives to make people happy."

Zambelli is the company hired to produce the 25 minute pyrotechnic show over Lake Tahoe on July 4, starting at 9:45 p.m.

Central California near Lake Isabella has burned 43,460 acres, destroyed 150 homes, killed two

3:00 p.m. update 6/29: Rain showers in the mountains above Bakersfield have helped fire fighters gain control of the Erskine Fire which has now consumed 46,684 acres near Lake Isabella.

The 1,743 firefighters at the scene have a containment line around 60 percent of the fire.

There are currently no evacuations in place and a re-entry plan has been established. 257 homes were destroyed with another 17 damaged.

Opinion: Air quality in Lake Tahoe

To keep Tahoe cherished and known for its beauty, locals try in their best efforts to “keep Tahoe blue.” Sadly, negative effects in our ecosystems come from humans which could damage the clarity of the lake and the air quality. Bad air quality comes from numerous sources, such as car emissions, uncontained fires, and contributors to toxic runoff into the forest; these sources of pollution must be stopped.

The National Weather Service forecast for the area calls for winds, rain, a trace of snow for the next seven days.

Bijou Bike Park: Preventing damage, safety issues and planned updates

Sledders and snowboarders this season were not kind to the new Bijou Bike Park, breaking down banked trails, overturning tables and benches, and leaving the area full of trash.

At Thursday's South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Commission meeting, City staff, commissions and bike enthusiasts discussed how to ensure the damage and some other issues at the park come to an end.

OMG Fun Run to take runners up Meyers Grade

The inaugural OMG Fun Run will be held in Meyers on Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. OMG stands for "Old Meyers Grade," and that is where the course will take participants, over the 2.6 mile round-trip road which at one time took cars up Echo Summit.

Woman rescued from cliffs above Emerald Bay

An Incline Village woman was rescued from the cliffs above Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay on Thursday after she slipped while climbing down the mountain.

Jane Rylander had been climbing in the steep cliff bands from Vikingsholm parking lot down towards the main castle. She slipped and slid down the embankment becoming stuck on the cliff band. She was not injured but could not climb up or down and was in the need of rescue.

Rain and snow in South Lake Tahoe forecast

Outdoor Earth Day festivities in South Lake Tahoe has meant a return of winter in past years, and 2016 will be no different. Good news for the festival is the Friday night snow will make room for a sunny and warmer Saturday before the next system moves in.

A series of storms are headed to the Sierra, the first set to arrive Thursday night/Friday morning.

It is also closing weekend at Heavenly Mountain Resort, and they should have a fresh layer of powder for the skiers headed to the slopes. Both Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe are both closed for the season.

Fast moving storm to bring rain and snow to Lake Tahoe; back in 60s by Sunday

A relatively weak Spring storm is headed to Lake Tahoe, bringing with it modest rain and snow amounts as it moves through the Sierra and western Nevada on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow levels will be down to around 4500 - 5500 feet. Although it will be cold enough for widespread snow showers, there won't be much in the way of snow totals with this storm though the West Slope should see more than the Lake Tahoe Basin and Reno. On Wednesday, the NWS in Sacramento forecast 4"-8" for the higher elevations.

Wet weekend should bring Lake Tahoe to natural rim

A low pressure system has moved over the Sierra, bringing cooler temperatures and precipitation for the next week. Snow levels will be rather high starting around 9,000 feet, dropping periodically down to 7,500 feet. The highest passes could become slick at times, but major issues are not expected.

Nice Spring week ahead in South Lake Tahoe; Rain possible next weekend

South Lake Tahoe will see high in the 60s this week, with a chance of rain coming into the Basin by April 8. 2016.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, forecast simulations are coming into better agreement in a transition to a wet pattern starting the end of the upcoming week into next weekend. The Climate Prediction Center’s 6-10 day and 8-14 day outlooks both agree on this as well.

Spring Slider passing through Lake Tahoe late Sunday

A 'Slider' storm is expected to move into the Reno/Lake Tahoe area Sunday night through Monday.

Snow accumulations are likely above 5500 feet and possible down to the lowest valleys including Reno and Carson City and could affect their morning commute on Monday.

Daytime high temperatures will drop around 20 degrees between Sunday and Monday, with freezing temperatures possible overnight on Sunday.

Latest storm adds needed water to Lake Tahoe and California

The latest storms to hit the Sierra and Lake Tahoe kept wter content in the snowpack close to average, with some areas of California going above average in the precipitation they've received.

Officials from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) will be making their last monthly snowpack measurement near Sierra-at-Tahoe next week, but electronic readings taken March 22, 2016 show the snowpack is at 92 percent of average.

Most of the ski resorts around the lake, while still below average snowpack, are experiencing the best measured snow in a few years.

El Dorado Savings in Georgetown robbed at gunpoint

The El Dorado Savings Bank in Georgetown, Calif., was robbed at gunpoint by an unknown man on Monday, March 21. 2016 at 12:49 p.m.

The suspect is identified as being a white male adult, was wearing blue jeans, blue rain coat and a San Francisco 49ers ball cap. He was armed with a black pistol and seen leaving the area in a red Dodge Durango, most likely a 2004-09 model.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies, detectives and CSI personnel, along with allied law enforcement, responded to the bank and interviewed numerous employees, customers and witnesses.

High pressure off the California coast will be moving slowly inland, bringing continued dry weather and generally light winds with a steady warming trend through Saturday.

The warm temperatures and clear skies will move out and make way for cooler temperatures and gusty winds. The next chance for precipitation returns Sunday into Tuesday as a storm moves through northern California and northern Nevada.

Chain controls going up on Lake Tahoe roads

The next way in a series of storms over the Sierra has made its way into Lake Tahoe tonight, with forecasters predicting up to two feet of snow at lake level by Monday morning.

Interstate 80 has had chain controls up for much of the afternoon, and Highway 50 has just put theirs up.

As of 8 p.m. Saturday, controls are now up on Highway 50 from Twin Bridges to Meyers, with chains required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires.

New storm headed to Lake Tahoe: One foot of snow possible at lake level

Could this be a "Miracle March?" With almost two feet of new snow added to ski resorts last weekend, and another two feet expected this weekend, signs are pointing to getting well above average on the Sierra snowpack totals. The precipitation is there, but all depends on the temperature.

The National Weather Service in Reno today said, "Higher confidence this afternoon with potent winter storm expected to arrive Saturday with rain, snow and wind this weekend into Monday morning."
