STATELINE, Nev. - Casinos in Nevada are now allowed to open once their new protocol and guidance plans are approved by the state's Gaming Control Board. Since Governor Sisolak's reopening announcement, casino properties have been putting the social distancing and safety measures in place to once again welcome guests.

Soroptimists of South Lake Tahoe to fund softball field renovations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past decade, the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) club has been allocating a percentage of annual fundraising efforts to a 'Major Project Fund.'

Members wanted to meet a series of developed criteria and ultimately leave a lasting legacy in South Lake Tahoe with that project and considered needs presented by area non-profits. A winner has been selected and members have just voted to give $325,000 to support the Soroptimist Softball Renovation Project.

Sierra House Elementary opens fully on Tuesday

Crews have cleared out of Sierra House Elementary and it is set to reopen to all grades on Tuesday, October 1.

Families, students, and staff got the good news Monday.

"The kids and staff are thrilled to be back," said Lake Tahoe Unified School District Spokesperson Shannon Chandler. "It's like a second home so I imagine that everyone is relieved and comforted to be back."

South Lake Tahoe campground closed for restroom renovations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Campground by the Lake, the City of South Lake Tahoe's campground at Rufus Allen and Lake Tahoe Boulevards, has closed for the 2019 season.

The City Council approved funds to completely renovate the aging restroom structures, a long-time complaint of many campers.

The new restrooms will have new toilets, insulated water pipes and coin operated showers. In case of the possibility of future winter camping, the facilities will be able to have the showers operate in winter.

Campground by the Lake will reopen in the Spring.

LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater announces retirement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

These features flow directly into Lake Tahoe and carry fine sediment pollution from our roads and neighborhoods into the lake, further degrading its clarity.

South Lake Tahoe police station to undergo small portion of needed renovations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A full list of needed renovations at the South Lake Tahoe police station would cost a few million dollars, but until a more comprehensive capital planning process is completed the Council voted to give them $225,000 to get started on the most immediate needs.

South Lake Tahoe City Council on a delayed start Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the current blizzard, the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 5 will start two hours late at 11:00 a.m. The closed session portion of the meeting will start at 10:30 a.m.

City officials said this delayed start will allow attendees to get to the meeting safely.

There are 15 items on the agenda including the final vote on a cannabis use ordinance and first reading on a mobile vending ordinance.

Boys & Girls Club proposes idea of new home to LTUSD

What is currently six portable buildings at the Al Tahoe school site could be a new home for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT). That is the idea Jude Wood presented to the school board Tuesday night.

Wood, the BGCLT Executive Director, spoke in front of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's Trustees, giving them a look into a proposed partnership and future facility use agreement with the District with a new Clubhouse built on District owned property. The Club would fully fund the new building.

Cold weather creates full house at Tahoe Warm Room; Donations needed

It was a cold one last night, and 25 South Lake Tahoe area homeless found relief from the single digit temperatures at the newly opened Warm Room, operated by the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH).

The Warm Room opened on Thursday, December 15 after days of renovations to the long vacant building located at 2179 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. There are 25 beds, hot drinks and snacks for those coming in from the cold and spending the night.

Inn by the Lake changes name to Hotel Azure Tahoe – $3.5 million renovation completed

Inn by the Lake in South Lake Tahoe has changed their name, and along with a new name comes new rooms and suites, and renovated public areas.

The hotel located at 3300 Lake Tahoe Blvd., is now called Hotel Azure, a name to match the lake across the street and the skies that surround them.

Hotel Azure has completed extensive renovations with the re-opening of the hotel in time for ski season.

Tahoe Warm Room in new building, ready to serve homeless starting December 15

The cold temperatures of winter have settled in, and with them comes the announcement that the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) is opening their Tahoe Warm Room on December 15 at 7:00 p.m.

TCH has secured a new space at 2179 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe for the winter. There were needed renovations on the building, which has been sitting vacant for many years, pushing the opening date to mid-December.

Basin's only asphalt company, Tahoe Asphalt, to undergo major renovations

In operation in South Lake Tahoe since 1964, Tahoe Asphalt Inc. will replace their aging equipment this fall, some as old 63-years-old.

The batch plant, the only one of its kind in the Lake Tahoe Basin, was recently granted approval for their renovations by the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission after a series of public meetings. Located on Industrial Avenue, it predates most buildings west of the "Y", but a few neighbors were concerned about the plant and what it does to the environment.

Fire severely damages Tahoe Queen

ZEPHYR COVE, NV - Investigators and vessel inspectors from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco are on the scene of Tuesday's fire on board the 119-foot passenger Lake Tahoe paddle wheel boat, the Tahoe Queen.

"Most of the damage is limited to the boat's pilot house and second deck," Lt. Jake Aulner of the U.S. Coast Guard told South Tahoe Now. "This can be attributed to the great response by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department."

Aulner and the team from USCG Yerba Buena Island will be at the scene until the cause of the morning blaze is determined.

Lake Tahoe airport lobby improvements underway

To become more of a warm welcome to South Lake Tahoe, the lobby at the Lake Tahoe Airport is undergoing renovations that will include a gas fireplace, a lounge with new seating, new flooring and offices.

The Ridge Tahoe Says "I Do" to $2 million renovated wedding and event center

The Ridge Tahoe resort at the top of Kingsbury Grade has expanded their wedding and conference capabilities for the newly renovated 3,700 square foot Castle Rock Event Space. The rustic Tahoe mountain venue has expanded its Clubhouse by 2,300 square feet, added two state of the art meeting rooms highlighted by architectural details including complementary natural wood decor, 16-foot high ceilings, and large windows allowing for natural ambient light.

"The Factory Stores at the Y" are being transformed into "The Crossing at Tahoe Valley," with demolition crews on site dismantling parts of the building to accommodate a new design as they prepare for new tenants.

South Lake Tahoe native Jerod Haase donates to UAB athletes

The following is a story about Jerod Haase, STHS '92, a highly recruited basketball player who was the Nevada AAA Player of the Year after leading the Vikings to a Nevada state title. He donated $46,000 to pay the UAB basketball players' cost of attendance which covers college bills, travel and other expenses.

Owners of Hard Rock Lake Tahoe respond to contractor's legal action

On Monday, a story hit local media about legal papers filed in Douglas County court by SMC Construction, Inc against Neva One, LLC, the owners of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

In that suit, SMC alleged Neva One failed to pay them over $9 million on the remodeling of the old Horizon Casino. This amount represents expenses over the original contract according to SMC who was the contractor for renovations to the casino low-rise portion of the hotel/casino complex.

Lake Tahoe Community College not chosen as part of four-year degree pilot program

Lake Tahoe Community College was one of 36 community colleges in California to apply for a chance to offer baccalaureate degrees, just as 20 other states currently offer. The 15 colleges that will be part of the inaugural program were announced Tuesday, and LTCC was not among them.

Op/Ed: Lead Safe Tahoe Program Wraps Up

In 2009 the City of South Lake Tahoe was awarded its first lead hazard control grant for $1.5 million dollars that was federally funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Lead Safe Tahoe program was established so that the City could assist members of our community in reducing their exposure to hazards from lead-based paint. In 2011 the City was awarded a second lead hazard control grant in the amount of $2.0 million dollars.

SLT DMV Reschedules Remodeling; Closing For Two Days

The South Lake Tahoe office of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was scheduled to close last month for renovations, but due to stormy weather they postponed the project. The DMV announced today that they will be closing the office for two days in May to replace the carpet.

South Lake Tahoe DMV Renovations Canceled Due to Pending Snow Storm

The scheduled renovations at the South Lake Tahoe office of the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) have been postponed until a future date. They are alerting local customers that the work will not go on March 26 - April 1 as planned because of weather conditions.

South Lake Tahoe To Have Another "Park Tahoe Casino Resort"

By the end of 2014 there will be a new casino on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Park Tahoe Casino Resort will be the new name of the property currently known as the Horizon, according to Jon Park.

South Shore's Horizon Casino Resort to Close April 1

An era comes to an end on April 1 when the Horizon Casino Resort on the south shore of Lake Tahoe closes for renovations.

The resort was the one time local showcase of Elvis Presley and Liberace when the casino operated as Del Webb's Sahara Tahoe. In 1990 Del Webb sold the property to Kentucky based Columbia Sussex Corporation for $19 million.

Columbia Sussex owners, the Yung family, are the current operators under the corporate name, LV Casino LLC. Their lease ran out and long time Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley ranchers, the Park family, will take control after March 31.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel Invests $5 Million in Renovations

What many locals remember as Embassy Suites, the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel is still a thriving and vibrant part of the community. On April 1 of this year, the hotel owners, Ken Corporation, Ltd and management team, PHR Management, announced that they would be dropping the franchise agreement with Embassy Suites and become the Lake Tahoe Resort. Since then, they have been investing $5 million in property renovations and upgrading all 400 rooms in the nine-story all-suite hotel. The work is taking place in phases with completion planned for the winter season.

Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe to become independent beginning April 1

The corporation that owns Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe – Hotel & Ski Resort announced today that as of April 1 the hotel will be operating as an independent property with a new management company. PHR Management, Inc., an affiliate of Ken Corporation, LTD., the Japan-based ownership group, will assume management of the hotel. Max Saito, vice president of PHR, said the company will retain the hotel’s 220 employees.
