SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was an exciting end to the Amgen Tour of California Stage 6, taking the cyclists from Folsom to South Lake Tahoe via State Highway 88 and Kingsbury Grade. After a climb the professionals made look easy up the back side of Kingsbury Grade, several of the riders stayed in a pack until Egan Bernal from Colombia pulled away to win Friday's stage.

Off-duty firefighters save life of man who fell off kayak in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe man is alive today thanks to efforts of rescuers who were on the beach of Tahoe Beach Retreat on Thursday, May 10, when he went underwater after being on a kayak.

At 2:46 p.m., a call was made to 911 about a drowning man in the lake. When the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived three minutes later, two off-duty firemen were on the scene already, along with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

With just over 2k left to ride to the summit of Gibraltar Road, Team Sky’s 21-year-old Egan Bernal (COL) attacked and swiftly climbed away to a solo victory to close out Stage 2 of the 2018 Amgen Tour of California. UHC cycling team training in South Lake Tahoe before Amgen TOC

The Amgen Tour of California is just a week away, and since both the women's and men's races come through South Lake Tahoe this year, many cyclists can be seen training on area roads.

On Wednesday, four members of the United Heath Care (UNC) cycling team joined local comedian and radio personality Howie Nave on a bike ride to Round Hill Pines.

Howie participates in the annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, so he can ride, and the ladies of Amgen today treated him kindly on the roads, not leaving him in the dust as he joked about.

Lauren Hall and Lauretta Hanson with the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team will be “racing” local radio host Howie Nave on the bike path at Kahle Meadow trailhead to Nevada Beach on Wednesday, May 9. They’ll meet for coffee at Clydes Coffee Roasting Co at 10:00 a.m. and will take off around 11:00 a.m. Public, media, cycling enthusiasts, community members, businesses are welcome to mingle for coffee as well as join them for a fun race/bike ride to the beach.

Amgen cyclist Peter Stetina hits the road from South Lake Tahoe to Kirkwood

American professional road cyclist Peter Stetina was in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, inviting local cyclists to join him on a training run from Sprouts to Kirkwood, and back.

Daniel Knight of Dayton, Nev., the assistant manager of Save Mart in Carson City came to town to join Stetina. Chadwick Clark of South Lake Tahoe, the chef at Camp Galilee in Glenbrook, also joined in. Both ride their bikes to work when weather allows.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Professional road racing cyclist Peter Stetina is in South Lake Tahoe to train for May's Amgen Tour of California and the public is invited to meet him as well as gone on a ride out to Kirkwood on Wednesday, April 18.

From 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Stetina will be at Sprout's Café. At 9:45 a.m., 10:00 a.m at the latest, Stetina will take cyclists on the training route to Luther Pass and Pickett’s Junction, proceeding toward Kirkwood Mountain Resort if time allows (casual pace for first hour; hours 2-3 will be at a fast pace).

Changes ahead for South Shore bus services

One thing is certain, something has to change or there will not be enough money to operate buses around the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. What isn't certain is how those changes will look, where extra funding can come from, or if services will have to be cut.

During Friday's Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) board meeting, options to keep a sustainable transit system in place for Lake Tahoe were discussed. Buses continue to operate at a loss and that cannot continue, according to the TTD staff.

LimeBike to expand to use of scooters in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe was the first city in California to carry the dockless bicycle sharing system, LimeBike, and now the community may soon be seeing the next generation, Lime-S.

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, Sam Dreiman, Manager of Strategic Development for LimeBike, and Jesse Patterson, Deputy Director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, made a presentation to Council on numbers from 2017 and plans for 2018.

Man dies after being pinned under snowmobile on Tahoe Rim Trail

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) deputies and Search and Rescue (SAR) responded to Spooner Summit and the Tahoe Rim Trail on Thursday afternoon after receiving a call of a missing person.

At about 4:50 p.m. on March 29, 2018, Michael Mullins called for help after not being able to find his friend after they became separated while snowmobiling about 15 miles in on the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Mullins said his friend, 56-year-old Thomas Korves of Elk Grove, was not an experienced snowmobiler so he called 911 for help when he couldn't locate him.

Designate a sober driver on St. Patrick's Day

While the public makes plans to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and other law enforcement agencies are preparing to keep the roadways free of impaired drivers so that everyone can safely enjoy the festivities.

SLTPD is adding two patrols on Saturday to watch for drunk drivers on local roads, and CHP officers will be doing to the same.

Two Lake Tahoe locals featured on Women Who Dare

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - One year ago, South Tahoe Now carried the story of Kerry Gross, a local woman who was setting off on a bike ride across the country as part of her "Women Who Dare" project.

The Women Who Dare podcast, to be released on March 6, follows Gross on her five-month bike ride where she met inspirational women who had a story to tell. She spent the summer of 2017 riding 5,800 miles to meet and interview remarkable women.

USFS asks snowmobilers to protect the land and stay in areas with adequate snow

Snowmobilers are being asked to move to areas with adequate snow coverage for their activities and to stay away from bare dirt and patchy snow areas.

With the snowpack in the Sierra at very low levels, and in anticipation of a busy holiday weekend, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) are informing snowmobile operators to also not ride across streams or over small trees or brush. Operating snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows have 100% renewable energy goal in 2018

To help achieve Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows’ goal to be powered by 100 percent clean, renewable energy sources, Liberty Utilities, the electric service provider in the Lake Tahoe region of California, is actively collaborating with resort leadership to identify and develop new renewable energy generation, storage and energy efficiency projects to benefit the Olympic Valley and surrounding areas. Subject to regulatory approval, the two companies intend to achieve the resort’s 100 percent renewable goal as early as December 2018.

Impaired driving over Super Bowl weekend a focus of law enforcement

Over the next two weeks, Northern Nevada residents can expect to see double or even triple the normal law enforcement presence. The Nevada Highway Patrol has joined forces with law enforcement agencies statewide to crack down on impaired driving, and has an important message for the public: if you’ll be drinking, designate a sober driver, and if you drive impaired, you will be arrested.

New luxury bus between Lake Tahoe and Bay Area hopes to ease traffic issues

SnowGlobe thrills attendees as Khalid and others take the stage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Fans of electronic music have flocked to South Lake Tahoe for the annual SnowGlobe outdoor music festival held December 29-31 at, one the Community Fields. The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field.

Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, underage drinking and drugs.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on theft and drug charges

A 38-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested early Saturday for felony suspicion of attempted commercial burglary and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

William Jack Phelps was taken into custody in the 4200 block of South Carson Street.

According to the arrest report, a security guard contacted the sheriff’s office regarding a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Big Lots, 4215 South Carson Street.

NDOT completes second season of SR 28 shared use path construction

The Nevada Department of Transportation this week completed the second construction season of the State Route 28 Shared Use Path, Water Quality and Safety Improvement Project near Incline Village. The entire project is anticipated to complete in late 2018 or early 2019, depending on weather.

Polar Express Train a holiday treat for all ages

One thing was evident as the special Polar Express Train departed the depot, you don't have to have kids with you to enjoy the annual holiday favorite on the historic V & T Railroad.

For eight years V & T has held the Polar Express during the Christmas season. Tickets normally disappear as quickly as they're posted for sale, but this year organizers are trying something new to give more people a chance to enjoy the experience.

Anyone that knew George knows that he was not only extremely generous, fun loving and tenacious but he was also notorious for playing pranks on nearly everyone he met. Whether he “had to catch a plane” in order to speed up dinner or exaggerated his age by 10 years, he was always one for a smile and a laugh. All of us would describe him as the best husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa we could ask for. Everytime you asked how he was doing, he simply responded with “fantastic.” Which was a perfect reflection of his positive and uplifting personality.

North Lake Tahoe students get indoor snowboarding lesson from Olympian

LAKE TAHOE - In an ongoing effort to make snowboarding accessible to every kid, Burton Learn to Ride, Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows hosted local kids Wednesday, November 8 for an hour of indoor snowboarding with video instruction from Olympic halfpipe snowboarding champion Kelly Clark, Burton’s Jeff Boliba and instructors from Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Amgen Tour of California men's and women's stages return to South Lake Tahoe

Good news for South Lake Tahoe as the Amgen Tour of California has announced their 2018 race schedule. A favored site for the women’s race, South Lake Tahoe will once again host the men for the Stage 6 finish and welcome back the women for the fourth year in a row on May 18. 2018.

AEG, the world’s leading sports and live entertainment company, made the announcement Thursday.

Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows plans base-to-base gondola to open by 2019

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows formally announced its plan to install a base-to-base gondola connecting The Village at Squaw Valley and the base area at Alpine Meadows today. The freshly branded “California Express” gondola is targeted to open ahead of the 2019-20 winter season. The connection of these two mountains will realize the long-held dream of the pioneers who brought the sport of skiing and the 1960 Winter Olympics to Squaw Valley nearly 60 years ago.

Free bus passes for LTCC students, Ridge Tahoe and Heavenly employees

The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) Board of Directors approved several funding agreements with local entities Friday which will provide free rides for several groups including Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) students, employees and guests of the Ridge Tahoe and associated properties, as well as Heavenly Mountain Resort employees.

The agreement between TTD and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) to allow current students with a valid Lake Tahoe Community College identification card to ride all local transit services at no charge during the academic year ending June 30, 2018.

Barton doctor honored as Hometown Hero; flies in F-16 at Minden airshow

Dr. Kyle Swanson may be the first surgeon to ride in an F-16. On Thursday, October 5, the Minden Airshow and U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds recognized the orthopedic surgeon and veteran as a “Hometown Hero.” As part of the honoring, Dr. Swanson was rewarded with a practice ride in an F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Toys and food needed for Community Toy Drive

For 26 years it was known as the "Tahoe Toy Drive" and motorcycles full of toys for local children would move through South Lake Tahoe in an effort to stock the toy shelves at Christmas Cheer.

The name has changed but the mission is the same.

Now known as the Community Toy Event, the local toy and food drive to benefit Christmas Cheer will take place on Saturday, October 7 at the American Legion Hall starting at noon.

The South Tahoe Association of Realtors is now sponsoring the event with the American Legion Post 795 and Ladies Auxiliary.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Cali. - Winter may have popped into town for a few days, but fall is back as so is the 23rd annual Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson October 7-8.

This popular rite of passage features the required Oktoberfest and fall inspired brews as well as activities for the whole family from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Admission and parking are free, and festival goers are encouraged to take advantage of the free bike valet in front of the Mountain Sports Center. Bikers will receive an ice cream coupon when they valet their bikes.

Nominations open for Lake Tahoe Bicycle Achievement Awards

Know of a business, agency, organization or individual who has made significant advancements to promoting safer bicycling opportunities for the Lake Tahoe region?

Now is the time to toot their horn as the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Achievement Awards nomination period has opened. Each year the Lake Tahoe Bike Coalition honors those who have helped the bicycling community around the lake have a safer, better ride.

Nominations must be submitted by October 15, 2017.

South Lake Tahoe woman dies in motorcycle crash

An afternoon motorcycle ride through Hope Valley turned fatal for a 64-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman on Sunday, September 17.

At approximately 4:48 p.m., the unidentified woman was riding her Harley Davidson westbound on SR-88 and slowing at the junction with SR-89. She was making a left turn onto southbound SR-89. At the same time, a 58-year-old woman from Gardnerville, Nevada was traveling eastbound on SR-88 in her Buick La Sabre. She was approaching the same intersection at approximately 50-55 mph.

Museum in Carson City to host community birthday bash for Glenn Lucky

Former South Lake Tahoe resident Glenn Lucky turn 65 this month, and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is planning a big birthday party in his honor on September 27 at 10:00 a.m. in the Dema Guinn Concourse of the museum at 600 N. Carson Street.

Lucky was born on Sept. 27, 1952 in Coronado, Calif. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was just one.

He and his family moved to the South Shore when Glenn was 3-year-old.

Squaw Valley resurrects plans to add year-round coaster

Squaw Valley has applied for a permit to install Lake Tahoe's second gravity-powered coaster, the Timberline Twister.

In March, 2013, Squaw Valley scrapped plans for the coaster "due to business considerations and capital priorities," a.ccording to a letter sent to Placer County at the time

Now plans are back on for the ride that will expand on-mountain experiences for families. It will be located at the bottom of the mountain between the Far East and Red Dog chairlifts, an area already zoned for this type of recreational use.

Spots available for Sunday's 15th annual Tour de Tahoe

The 15th annual Tour de Tahoe, which is also known as Bike Big Blue Ride, is Sunday, September 10. Ride the 72 miles around the lake which include a challenging 800-foot climb to a rest stop overlooking Emerald Bay and a 1,000 foot climb to Spooner Junction.

Late, same-day registrations will be accepted as long as spaces are available.

Law enforcement strives for zero fatalities during holiday weekend

Fatalities due to impaired driving and riding continue to be a top traffic issue on Nevada’s roadways and with overall fatalities at an increase in comparison to this time last year, the Nevada Highway Patrol is working in conjunction with agencies aligned with Joining Forces to boost enforcement efforts.

South Lake Tahoe youth invited to fly the skies during Young Eagles Rally

Kids will be able to experience South Lake Tahoe from the air during the 25th annual Young Eagles Rally at the Lake Tahoe Airport on September 23, 2017 starting at 8:00 a.m.

The Truckee Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will be hosting the event which provides free airplane rides to youth ages 8 to 17 years old.
Volunteer pilots introduce kids to aviation by giving them the free airplane rides, over 40,000 nationwide. Since EAA started in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe, 3400 youth have been able to get into the air.
