Day One of the 17th annual Amgen Tour of California got underway in Sacramento Sunday with 132 riders on 19 teams representing 33 countries covering the 88.9-mile ride. In the group are three World Champions, Olympians, Tour de France stage winners and six current National Road Race Champions from around the world.

The following is a list of roadwork projects CalTrans is working on in Lake Tahoe.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

5.10.19 Update: On Thursday, May 9, 2019, recycled water from a South Tahoe Public Utility District Luther Pass storage tank leaked into Grass Lake Creek. Water samples collected from Grass Lake Creek immediately following the spill showed no change in coliform bacteria, meaning the spill caused no significant impact to water quality. A leak from the overflow pipe inside the tank was the cause of the spill. The tank has been drained and taken off-line until repairs can be made.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Dale Sare Memorial Optimist Kids' Fishing Derby at Sawmill Pond will be held on Saturday, June 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is hosting the annual fishing derby which is free for kids 14-years-old and younger. Fishing tackle and bait is available for use. There will be free, expert guidance from Tahoe Fly Fishing.

A free fish cleaning table is also available.

Hot dogs, chips and lemonade will be provided.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In honor of Mrs. Lisa Maloff's numerous contributions to our community, today the South Lake Tahoe City Council officially renamed a street after her, and issued a proclamation.

In this proclamation, the City extended to Lisa and Robert "Bob" Maloff their appreciation and gratitude for the numerous donations made to the local community. Her philanthropic donations have forever changed the community and her donations
throughout the medical, education, field sports, and family services will touch generations of Lake Tahoe residents.

Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District is hosting a blood drive at their Round Hill firehouse on Tuesday, May 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. You can be a lifeline to someone in need this May and receive a $10 Amazon eCard as a thank you.

The simple act of giving blood could have a monumental impact on up to three people in need of a blood transfusion. Every drop that you give is vital for a patient in need.

Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome.

MEYERS, Calif. - Expect traffic delays along Apache Avenue in Meyers into October as crews move approximately 2,500 feet of overhead power lines underground. They will also be moving communication lines owned by AT&T and Charter underground as well.

The work will be done on Apache Avenue from Highway 50 north to East San Bernardino Avenue. They will be completed in the area next year during the allowed construction time period of May-October.

LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV - Roadside watercraft inspections stations aimed at stopping the spread of aquatic invasive species are opening for the season. Locations, hours of operation, and opening dates are online at TahoeBoatInspections.com and as follows:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting May 25, 2019, there will be no more youth staying in the Placerville Juvenile Detention Facility. After a decision by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors in February, South Lake Tahoe's Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) will be the only youth facility in the county to serve those in the justice system 18-years-old and younger, for now.

There are several reasons for the changes including an aging facility, increasing costs and the fact that fewer youth are working their way through the juvenile justice system.

Not very often does a new car/truck come along that gets my attention as the new Honda Passport did. It is certainly not a rebadged Isuzu as the original “rush to market” first Passport was.

Bus drivers in Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) were honored today during a celebration of California Bus Driver Appreciation Day.

The special day was created by the state legislature in 2009 “in order to draw special public attention to school bus drivers for their continued and excellent services to pupils in California.” After being created in the state, it has now spread to a nationally observed day on the fourth Tuesday of the month of April.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With three major road construction projects on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe this summer, both residents and visitors alike will have their patience put to the test as they navigate local roads.

Not only will CalTrans have three major projects on Highway 50 between Echo Summit and Al Tahoe Boulevard, but the City of South Lake Tahoe will have their own road projects going on at Sierra Boulevard and Gardner Mountain.

It truly will be a six-month-long "Road Construction Season."

Happy Easter! Spring Conditions continue as Resorts head into Easter Weekend. Many Resorts will be closing after April 21… And, some will remain open thru May and others into July… It’s been a great snow year and we wish you a safe Spring Skiing Season!

WEATHER – Greater Lake Tahoe Area:

Friday: Partly cloudy. Highs 61 to 71. Light winds becoming southwest around 10 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoon.

With warming temperatures and melting snow, Douglas County is reminding residents of the potential for some minor spring flooding in the months to come. With the spring run-off, citizens could expect to see some road closures on arterial roads such as Mottsville, Centerville Lane, Muller Lane and Genoa Lane.

In preparation for flooding, the Douglas County Stormwater Division has been removing flood debris in river channels with the Carson Valley Conservation District, Carson Water Subconservancy and Nevada Division of Water Resources.

Caltrans has started a repair project in Placerville that will require them to close some on and off ramps and lanes of Highway 50 until April 26.

The Mosquito Bridge undercrossing is being repaired and will impact travelers along the highway from Clay Street to Carson Road around the clock.

Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect lane restrictions, the Mosquito Road on- and off-ramps and the eastbound Broadway off-ramp closed around the clock until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April.

One of two lanes will be closed at all times.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road in the historic community of Phillips is a total loss after a fire ripped through it Friday night.

At 11:15 p.m. on April 12, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) crews were called out to the scene along with several other agencies. Upon arrival, they found the home fully engulfed. Inside the home had been two women, one male, two dogs and two cats.

The male was transported to Barton Hospital with smoke inhalation and one cat was lost to the fire.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At approximately 1:39 p.m. Thursday a boulder came off the mountainside right into the path of a pick-up truck traveling westbound on Highway 50 over Echo Summit near Johnson Pass Road.

The driver hit the boulder and his vehicle had to be towed from the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol in Meyers.

There were no injuries in the incident. As Caltrans was clearing the lane and the vehicle hooked up to be moved there was one-way traffic over the summit. All was cleared in under an hour.

Highway 50 is now open and free of controls.

Weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the USDA Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin.

Sure, I like most of the vehicles I test, but there are some that stand out. Then from those stand out motor vehicles, we can find the best of the best. When you factor in price or bang for the buck, that best of the best gets very small, maybe two or three vehicles. The new Genesis G70 is one of them. The other vehicle is the Kia Stinger which is a slightly larger sibling of the G70. I will discuss the differences, but for this Road Beat it is the G70 that gets this ultimate spotlight and my tester was an AWD G70 Sport 3.3T.

For those waiting for an annual sojourn down State Route 88 to Daffodil Hill, it's time to change your plans. They opened for the season on March 30, not knowing their season would only last two days.

A rainy week has more than dampened spirits, it also damaged the thousands of daffodils lining the four-acre farm owned by the McLaughlin family.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just before noon Wednesday the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) reopened State Route 89 around Emerald Bay. Snow slides covered the roadway on Monday, forcing the closure of one of two routes between the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe.

Motorists should still use caution when traveling roads in the Sierra as other small snow slides have been reported along Highway 50 at Echo Summit as well as SR89.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect tied to the robbery of four banks and the attempted robbery of another in recent months.

Two of those banks were in El Dorado Hills, and the others were in Davis, Yuba City, and Dixon:
