Drinking water meets standards as 400-acre PCE plume remains in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/15/2018 - 11:32pmTetrachloroethylene (PCE) was found in drinking water wells in South Lake Tahoe near the "Y" in 1989, and it remains in the groundwater today, forming a containment plume from the intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89 and heading toward Lake Tahoe through the Tahoe Keys.

Steve Teshara named president of California Association of Councils of Governments
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/31/2018 - 3:12pmSteve Teshara, CEO of the Tahoe Chamber and chairperson of the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) Board of Directors, now has another leadership duty for the upcoming year.
Teshara will serve as the president of the California Association of Councils of Governments (CALCOG), a group whose membership includes 47 regional governments involved in the planning, funding, and development of the state’s transportation infrastructure.
He has been representing TTD on the CALCOG Board.

New plan for State Route 89 being developed to alleviate traffic, improve access
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/07/2018 - 8:30amA collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations are working on what is being called the 'SR 89 Recreation Management Plan,' which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline. Some residential neighborhoods also rest along this area.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/02/2018 - 3:13pmThe 4th of July is not only a fun holiday, but it is a very busy one in Lake Tahoe. Due to heavy holiday traffic, Caltrans will suspend their roadwork projects at the lake.
Roadwork on U.S. Highway 50 from the "Y" intersection to the Trout Creek Bridge will be suspended starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 3. The regular weekly construction schedule will resume at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 5.
Although construction will be suspended for the holiday, there will be heavy traffic and work zones will still be set up. Please "Be Work Zone Alert."

A person buzzing down the road or bike path on a lime green electric scooter, courtesy of the newest and hottest trend, scooter sharing. In South Lake Tahoe, Lime Bike introduced the scooters a few weeks ago, and since then the popularity has increased daily.
One thing every user has is a huge smile on their face. One thing most riders don't have is a helmet and knowledge of electric scooter laws.

This project will make seismic improvements to the new bridge, widen the structure to allow for 8-foot shoulders and 6-foot sidewalks, and improve the roadway on both sides of the bridge. Completion is expected in mid-August. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled on the highway:

Several area agencies have teamed up with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue to participate in the 5th annual Wildfire Safety Expo in the TJ Maxx parking lot at the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 9 from noon to 3:00 p.m.
Learn about how planning is the most important tool in staying safe during a wildfire, including creating defensible space and having a home evacuation plan.
There will be informational booths, refreshments and fun activities for the whole family. KRLT-FM will be broadcasting live and Smokey the Bear will be making an appearance.

Big changes for Wye in North Lake Tahoe as iconic features removed
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/23/2018 - 12:44pmThere are still trout in the Lake Tahoe Basin, but soon there will no longer the large trout sculpture that for years has greeting people to the town of North Lake Tahoe.
The iconic 21-foot trout sculpture has been sitting in the island intersection between State Route 89 and State Route 28 along with the Williamson Tree and Rotary Club flagpole.
Camp Richardson light to remain "off line" indefinitely
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/17/2018 - 11:40amCAMP RICHARDSON, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After meeting with partner agencies, Caltrans has decided to discontinue the use of the pedestrian hybrid beacon crossing device on State Route 89 in Camp Richardson indefinitely.
In an effort to make for safe pedestrian passage across the highway and to manage traffic through the State Highway 89 corridor, Caltrans installed the beacons in 2016 but they were often confusing to drivers with its yellow and red light system.
UHC cycling team training in South Lake Tahoe before Amgen TOC

On Wednesday, four members of the United Heath Care (UNC) cycling team joined local comedian and radio personality Howie Nave on a bike ride to Round Hill Pines.
Howie participates in the annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, so he can ride, and the ladies of Amgen today treated him kindly on the roads, not leaving him in the dust as he joked about.

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel held another town hall meeting about traffic with almost 30 people at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School this week. She brought along El Dorado County transportation staff and was joined by the California Highway Patrol.

The Winter Weather Advisory is ending at 8:00 a.m. Monday with another 1-3" of snow possible during the day and overnight.
US 50 over Echo Summit - Cedar Grove to Meyers - Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

The top cycling teams from the U.S., Switzerland, Germany and Belgium are now confirmed to race the 645 miles of Amgen for men, including BMC Racing Team ,Team Sky, Bora–Hansgrohe and Team Katusha–Alpecin.
State Route 89 opens up around Emerald Bay
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/20/2018 - 9:24amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) have cleared the snow from State Route 89 around Emerald Bay, opening the roads for the first time since Thursday.
Several feet of snow fell from Thursday to Saturday around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, keeping snow removal crews busy on all mountain roads.
With new storm systems headed to Lake Tahoe this week, the road could be closed again. For up to the minute road information, visit http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.

There is a chance of scattered snow showers in South Lake Tahoe with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 31. Winds will be from the southwest 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible. Tonight, isolated snow showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunny and 36 on Sunday!

Chain controls remain up and snow continues to come down
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/22/2018 - 9:36pmThe snow has been falling all down in the Sierra, giving residents and visitors a glimpse into a winter that hasn't been even a slight resemblance into the big winter of 2017.
At this point, every seems to be happy with what fell Thursday. Snow totals aren't in from the ski resorts yet since they release them in the morning, but they most likely will be several inches and hovering near the one foot level.
Holiday traffic and slick roads keeping tow trucks and law enforcement busy
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/19/2018 - 3:50pmNorth Upper Truckee and Sawmill Road have become parking lots Monday afternoon, reminiscent of 2017's problems of ill-equipped vehicles on snow covered back roads.
The California Highway Patrol and El Dorado County Sheriff's Office have spent Monday responding to several calls in the Meyers area of cars stuck on side roads as they attempt to circumvent the backlog of traffic on Highway 50.
Along with those issues there have been several accidents and as of 3:30 p.m, State Route 88 may have to close due to a crash
Chain controls on Sierra roads; slick conditions causing travel issues

There are currently areas of freezing fog and heavy snow, with whiteouts on some higher elevations roads. With this being a holiday weekend, expect more traffic than normal.

Man arrested after allegedly stealing car in Reno, leading officers to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/31/2018 - 4:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE CALIF. - A 35-year-old California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Reno, Nevada.
Raheem Ahmed Hanif, from Rodeo, California, was allegedly inside a 2017 Jeep Renegade when the Lithia Jeep dealer in Reno opened for business on January 31. Hanif then drove the car off the lot when the nighttime barriers were removed according to Officer Michael E. Brown of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe.

I-80 over Donner Pass has had chain controls go up at about 7:00 p.m. but Highway 50 over Echo Summit just saw chain controls go up at 10:15 p.m.

Squaw Valley Park to stay open for free snow fun this winter

The park’s parking area will be plowed all winter long, creating a free and convenient place to park and play.
Animal shelter empties right before Christmas
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/21/2017 - 10:58pmIf you were planning on adopting a pet in South Lake Tahoe for a Christmas gift, you're out of luck this year as the last adoptable pet at the El Dorado County Animal Services Shelter has been adopted.
Felix, a five-year-old purebred Bengal, was the last pet left at the shelter on Tuesday. By Wednesday, he had found a new home.
Emptying out the shelter is not uncommon at Christmas as many find the perfect gift among the animals being housed there.
The shelter is located at 1120 Shakori Drive off of State Route 89 in Meyers. Their phone number is (530) 573-7925.
