Good Morning Lake Tahoe Skiers & Riders!
Here is the Mountain Resort Report for April 19-21, 2019.
Happy Easter! Spring Conditions continue as Resorts head into Easter Weekend. Many Resorts will be closing after April 21… And, some will remain open thru May and others into July… It’s been a great snow year and we wish you a safe Spring Skiing Season!
WEATHER – Greater Lake Tahoe Area:
Friday: Partly cloudy. Highs 61 to 71. Light winds becoming southwest around 10 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoon.
Caltrans to hold public meeting on Meyers and South Lake Tahoe projects

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Long has been the joke that there are two seasons in Lake Tahoe, winter and roadwork. Both are holding up true for 2019 as we leave a long and heavy winter and prepare for several road construction projects.
On Wednesday, April 24, CalTrans is inviting the public to come out and learn about their three projects scheduled to begin on US 50 in the Lake Tahoe Basin this summer. The public meeting will be in the South Tahoe High School Student Union from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

US50 reopens after car hits boulder on Echo Summit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At approximately 1:39 p.m. Thursday a boulder came off the mountainside right into the path of a pick-up truck traveling westbound on Highway 50 over Echo Summit near Johnson Pass Road.
The driver hit the boulder and his vehicle had to be towed from the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol in Meyers.
There were no injuries in the incident. As Caltrans was clearing the lane and the vehicle hooked up to be moved there was one-way traffic over the summit. All was cleared in under an hour.
Highway 50 is now open and free of controls.
LTCC receives grant to expand College Promise program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The free college program at Lake Tahoe Community College, the College Promise, was just awarded a $150,000 grant to enhance and expand the program. They were just one of three community colleges in the state to receive the grant.
Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Promise program provides a free year of tuition for first-time, full-time students. With this grant award, LTCC can further enhance the program, adding free services and extra support to improve Promise student success.

Highway reopens after another snow slide closes Echo Summit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Travelers over Highway 50 and Echo Summit today had some challenges, once after the road was closed for avalanche control, and a second time when a snow slide covered the road.
One person was injured when their car was involved in the snow slide. They were transferred to the hospital with non-serious injuries according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO). Another buried car had no injuries involved.
Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show

The annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held on Friday, April 26, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 27, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The show will be staged in the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose Room, behind the bus garage and next to the track, entrance off Al Tahoe Blvd.
Admission to this show is FREE, and free door prize drawings will be held every twenty minutes with prizes going to show attendees.
Series of small weather systems heading to Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quick moving weather system will bring gusty winds, showers, and mountain snow to the Lake Tahoe region on Friday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. This will fall on the heels of a smaller system on Thursday.
South Lake Tahoe street rehabilitation plan presented to City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road rehabilitation has long been a concern of City Council, but there hasn't always been money in the budget to do anything more than patching, pothole filling and some resurfacing. With almost 130 miles of roads (260 lane miles) maintained by the City of South Lake Tahoe, with many of them past their prime, it would take millions of dollars to get all of them to a top rating.
SR89 around Emerald Bay reopens after snowslide removed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just before noon Wednesday the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) reopened State Route 89 around Emerald Bay. Snow slides covered the roadway on Monday, forcing the closure of one of two routes between the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe.
Motorists should still use caution when traveling roads in the Sierra as other small snow slides have been reported along Highway 50 at Echo Summit as well as SR89.

Snow slide on Echo Summit traps one, closed highway for much of the day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Highway 50 over Echo Summit has been closed all afternoon due to snow slides across the highway. State Route 89 around Emerald Bay is also closed due to snow slides in that area as well.
Travelers may have been hoping for an April Fools Day joke when they saw the road closures signs go up on a day free of snow showers, but it wasn't.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

Yet another snowfall struck South Tahoe High School, as Spring Break is just around the corner. Students prepared for a busy, stressful week with midterms and college prep testing. Juniors visit Lake Tahoe Community College for a career expo, seniors fight through senior projects, and STHS continues to impress in sports.
In Academics
Juniors at STHS today participates in LTCC’s Career Expo, as part of the CCC 10-year program that’s taught by Julie Cain, a teacher at STHS.

Cross-country skiing returns to Spooner Lake State Park

Once again, Spooner Lake State Park offers outdoor sports enthusiasts a system of meandering cross-country ski trails that wind through dense forest, across an open meadow and along the banks of Spooner Lake.
This trail system is free to the public and made possible by a partnership between Nevada State Parks and Nevada Nordic, a non-profit group based in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The scenic, intermediate trail includes several teardrop loops with flat rolling terrain, which makes it great for both families and experienced skiers. For current trail conditions visit nevadanordic.org.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

South Tahoe High School endured the beginning of Spring weather as the snow stopped falling and temperatures rose to 45F, giving students hope of warmer weather for the next following weeks. This week at STHS students prepared for upcoming school events, Julia Russell discussed Challenge Day, and Sofia Hedqvist signed to a college to continue her volleyball career in North Dakota.

Interstate 80 remains closed this morning as Caltrans crews work to clear the road for safe passage. US50 over Echo Summit is open with chain controls.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Traffic is nothing new in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, but Sunday traffic leaving Lake Tahoe has become worse once tech-savvy drivers learned how to navigate side roads. Residents cannot leave their homes for fear they won't be able to get back for hours, and drivers trying to make it back to Sacramento and the Bay Area get frustrated with standstill hours-long lines.

Another Sunday Funday on the Slopes… Some Fresh Snow reported at a few resorts in the upper elevations… Continued chance of Snow Showers today. Winds are impacting lifts at Heavenly, Squaw & Alpine… Winter Storm Watch goes in to effect tomorrow thru Wednesday… Take your good flat light lens goggles today! Have patience in lines… All roadways are cleared, with exception Hwy 88: R2 / Mt Rose Hwy 431: R2… Make it a Fun Day… Ski & Ride with Care & Be Safe!

Shaping up to be a Great day to hit the Slopes with Plenty of Machine Groomed & Skier-Rider Packed Powder! It Doesn’t Get Much Better! Take your good flat light lens goggles today! Have patience in lines… All roadways are cleared, with exception of Hwy 89 Emerald Bay Road open with R2; Hwy 28 East Shore: R2 & Mt Rose Hwy: R2… Make it a Fun Day… Ski & Ride with Care & Be Safe!
