Bread & Broth would like to thank Kirkwood Mountain Resort for once again supporting our Monday evening meal program at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall. Kirkwood’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsorship provided the funds for the nutritious and filling meal served at B&B’s July 18 dinner. That evening, the dinner guests enjoyed roasted chicken served with broccoli, beans, coleslaw, rice, and assorted desserts. It was a great “home-cooked” meal.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A pro-choice protest will be held at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 27 at 4 p.m.

This locally-planned event is the second one organizers have done since the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. This is also a fundraiser, with funds going to the Wild West Access Fund of Nevada. This fund was newly formed with the belief everyone should have the final say in their own reproductive decisions.

Over $1,300 was raised during the June protest between a GoFundMe campaign and cash donations taken in during the day.

UPDATE 7:00 PM: The Oak Fire is now 15,603 acres in size and remains 0 percent contained. During a packed community meeting tonight in Mariposa, fire officials said that, even though the containment line is at zero, they have been able to stop the spread of fire to the south. The active areas are to the north and the northeast, into the Sierra. There are a couple of fire scars in its current path that won't stop the fire but could slow it and let them get resources into the area.

STATELINE, Nev. - Two deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the report of a wildland fire in the woods behind Bally's casino at Stateline on July 21 at approximately 8:25 a.m.

The deputies could see smoke coming from the woods just east of Lake Parkway. They walked in about 50 meters and saw signs of a transient camp with garbage, toilet paper, and debris scattered around the area. They found two men who were cooking breakfast over a fire pit dug into the dirt, and it was not a wildland fire.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is hosting another "Tahoe History Talks on the Beach" on Tuesday, July 26. South Lake Tahoe urbanized bear expert Toogee Sielsch will share the history of the black bears on the South Shore.

The free beach talk is from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the beach side of Lakeview Commons, the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Lake Tahoe Blvd.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Michael Green appeared in Judge Suzanne Kingbury's South Lake Tahoe courtroom on Friday and entered a plea of "no contest" in the July 7, 1985 murder of Jane Hylton.

Michael Green, who is now 54, was 17 years old at the time of Hylton's murder.

The case attracted national attention after the original man convicted of the murder in 2005, Ricky Davis, had been found guilty and sent to prison. Long professing his innocence, DNA cleared him of the murder in 2020.

10:10 p.m. UPDATE: Power has been restored to many of those affected by the earlier power outage in South Lake Tahoe. 719 customers remain without power at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting a power outage in South Lake Tahoe this evening, affecting 4,525 customers. The lines are currently de-engergized and the expected restoral time is 11:25 p.m.

The cause of the outage is unknown at this time.

The Tahoe Arts Project is holding its popular Music on the Beach on Thursday, August 18 at the Tahoe Lakeshore Lodge, South Lake Tahoe. The gate opens at 6 p.m., music is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A special announcement happens right before music starts - the Dancing with the Tahoe Stars lineup!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Continuing its mission of advancing local health care through philanthropy, the Barton Health Foundation has donated $95,806 to fund medical equipment upgrades that will improve patient care and expand services at Barton Health. Seven devices have been funded, and will improve service lines across the organization, including the Family Birthing Center and Emergency Department. Through upcoming events and support of generous donors, the Barton Health Foundation will continue to fund innovations in technology available to the Lake Tahoe community.

7:40 p.m. UPDATE: The man missing on Lake Tahoe has been found and is being taken by boat to the Cave Rock boat ramp for evaluation. A family friend told South Tahoe Now they are checking for hypothermia but appears to be okay otherwise. He was wearing a life jacket.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - There was a two-vehicle collision on US50 near the entrance to Round Hill Pines Resort Wednesday evening, resulting in one person being ejected from their vehicle. They are being transported via Care Flight to Renown in Reno. A second person is on their way to Barton in an ambulance.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Reno man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday after allegedly stealing a car in Reno and bringing it to the lake.

At noon on July 20, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received word that a 2012 Subaru had been stolen in Reno and was in the area of Takela Drive. The owner of the vehicle had it on a used car lot but was alerted the car was gone so utilized its GPS tracking system.

7/22 UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol has identified the man who died in Wednesday's crash. Charles Idell, of South Lake Tahoe, was northbound on his 2007 Yamaha on Black Bart Avenue at 6:48 a.m. when he collided with a vehicle pulling out from Hank Monk Avenue, making a left-hand turn onto Black Bart. The collision is under investigation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 47-year-old male died Wednesday morning after colliding with a vehicle in South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Heavenly Mountain resort's auction of the North Bowl chairs was a big success, with the 97 chairs going for a total of $162,000.

With those funds, Heavenly has donated $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, and an additional $50,000 to Ski Run Park. The remaining $62,000 will go towards the EpicPromise foundation which supports community grants and our employees in times of need.

NEVADA CITY, Calif. — Ongoing drought and warming conditions have prompted the Tahoe National Forest to initiate Stage 1 fire restrictions starting July 20, 2022. Under these restrictions, the public can still build or maintain a fire, campfire, or charcoal briquette fire in established fire rings within designated developed campgrounds and day-use sites, but not outside of those areas. Campfires will not be allowed at all Tahoe National Forest recreation sites—a list of designated developed recreation areas is linked below.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While there may be algae "caution" signs at two South Lake Tahoe beaches, the Lahontan Water Board says they are only to bring awareness and no harmful algae blooms (HABs) have been detected there, or at any water area in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Kiva Beach and Connelly Beach both have the signage, and there is some visual appearance of algae blooms in those areas, so Lahontan posts the signs due to the high level of recreation that occurs at these beaches.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrested two local men after separate incidents this weekend, one after a pursuit and foot chase, the other after a family fight.

A 53-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after trying to escape from a South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) officer as they attempted to pull him over for a stop sign violation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you've been thinking this spring and so far this summer has been windier than normal, you're right! Between April 1 and June 30 this year, the average wind speed at the Tahoe Valley Airport has been 7.60 miles per hour (factoring in 24 hours a day and non-wind days). This is the highest average for this period since 2000 when that average was 8.30 miles per hour.
